Carlos stepped inside, finally glad to get out
of the sun. God damn, he was getting tired of walking. He needed a sit down and…
just a chance to relax and replenish his energy.

The place was larger than he’d have liked – he’d
rather have found a toolshed or something to relax in – but it was the only
walled-off area for at least half a mile. It just meant he’d need to check and
make sure it was clear first. Carlos set down his bags right next to the door.

He tightened the straps on his arm-guards and
held his crowbar up at the ready before he started to venture further inside.

Merle listened to the approaching footsteps, he was still lying in his nest, hiding and at the same time protecting the nest, he pull the bottles of water and the food closer, what if the person was here to steal it? What if it wasn’t a person? Merle was so tired of running away, of hiding, he didn’t have a motive to continue only his instinct for survival, he just wanted to find a safe place to stay, but apparently no place was safe, he would never be safe.

Slowly Merle moved, leaving the nest a little, leaving only his head out of the nest, looking at the human, apparently the human was armed and it only made Merle more frightened.

There was no ragged breathing. No hissing or
growling. Not even any bodies. The place had been gone through, of course, by
scavengers and folks just needing supplies, but other than that everything
seemed fine so far. The place must have been closed when the apocalypse
happened.

This was a relief for Carlos. He was too tired
for much else.

He started to relax as he checked behind the
counters and then started heading toward the back of the store. He didn’t hold
the crowbar up anymore, but just held it as he walked and looked.
