“If I signed them they wouldn’t be anonymous, and if I signed them people would know it’s me and not care. Because, if you haven’t noticed, no one cares about me, heh, so.. yknow. Can’t sign ‘em.”
“You misunderstand, just a bit. You’re implying that your mom doesn’t care about you; that is horrible and I feel for you. Almost viscerally. Because that is not okay, no matter what.
“However, on a separate note, you yourself as a person… you make it tough for me to want to associate with you.” That was an understatement.
“…I-i’m sorry, what?” He lifted a brow, looking very hurt.
“What’s wrong with me as a person? What did I do? As far as I know I didn’t do anything bad in the past couple of months…”
“Maven, you made Max hurt himself! You told him to!”
“What?! When?!” He immediately went into a defensive mode, “When did I tell him that?! I haven’t been with Max in weeks!”
“Then what is this, Maven? And this? What do you mean you haven’t been with him in weeks??”
“Hm, yeah, that’s not me.” He crossed his arms, “I’ve been with Reid and/or in my room crying all day yesterday. So don’t come at me with all that shit.”
“God, I don’t even know who Reid is. What do you mean it’s not you? It’s your face! What, is there someone who looks like you making a mess in this convergence of multiple broken universes?? ‘Evil twin’, as they say?”
“Yes.” He sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose. “Carlos. There are tons of Max’s running around at camp. And yet you think something like this would be impossible? Really? You’re from Night Vale, doesn’t stuff like this happen there daily?”
“No. We usually are told to kill our doubles,” Carlos said flatly. But thinking about it… Maven could be right. “Dammit… So you’re saying it’s another Max?”
“Well, yeah, pretty much.” He shrugged, “Or, in this case I guess it would be another Maven. Or another Purified Max. I dunno. But yes.”
“’Purified Max’… what does that even mean?”
