Carlos hadn’t been to a circus in years – not since he was little. But there had been a raffle at work and Carlos had won a coupon for a free ticket. He kinda hoped that his brother and/or his dad were in town so he could invite them to go with him.
Carlos made his way to the ticket office that was set up, standing in the line with his coupon as he looked at everything around him. Some things were different than what he remembered or imagined a circus to be like, but not everything could be a dated cliche trope he supposed.
Once at the ticket office he smiled and offered the coupon. “Hey… this any good?” he asked in a joking manner.
He
glanced over to the striped tent, laughing a bit and turning back to
Carlos with a shrug as his shoulders dropped he scratched at his neck
and rolled it.“She had a date, she’s not my partner by the way.. We’re just
siblings.” He explained before going on with, “Yeah that guy wasn’t
invited over here, I was just getting a drink when he came over.. Thanks
again,” Chuckling and dropping his hand, “You know you’re pretty limber
for some random guy in the audience..”Carlos chuckled softly. “Well, uh, I’m sure I’m going to be feeling it in the morning,” he confessed. “I work out in the field a lot, but I’m still not as active as I probably should be, heh.” He cleared his throat. “I-I was just referring to… well, when I said ‘partner’ I just meant your acrobatic routine partner. I didn’t know if you guys were… I didn’t want to assume.”
“Don’t worry about it,” He quickly shrugged it off with his eyes glancing over the park and sighing deeply from his chest, almost as if it was his last time viewing the place. His deepest eyes glinted like glitter in the ride’s lights, with his heavy makeup sparkling beautifully along his cheeks as he took another breath before playfully punching Carlos in the arm.
“Hey!” He exclaimed with a point of his finger, “You don’t know my name yet, it’s Skip.” He finally said with a smile.
Carlos smiled at him. He offered his hand to shake. “I’m Carlos,” he said. “Carlos Ramon. I’m a scientist. I should thank you for giving me a circus experience that I will never forget.”
Skip quickly grabbed his hand and shook it gently, exactly how anyone would have expected someone like Skip to shake a hand. “Scientist, huh? What’s someone so smart like you doing in a place where the runaways live, anyways? Just here for the stunts?” He laughed warmly, letting go of Carlos’s hand and dropping it to his side.
“I’m glad I could thrill you Carlos, it was my pleasure to drag you from your seat just to hear you shriek.” His laugh rattled up through his throat again, “Really though, were you interested in the show or did you just come to see idiots get hurt?”
Carlos chuckled. “No, nothing like that. I won a coupon in a raffle at work. So I came in for that. Honestly, I was scientifically interested in the equipment you use. And your use of the laws of physics to your advantage was pretty awesome to watch. I wish I brought my notebook so I could calculate some of the stuff you pulled.“
The acrobat blushed then, he raised a hand to his chest to feel his heartbeat accelerate and his blood rush into his cheeks. His eyes were wide for a moment before he simply chuckled, playing with a heart shaped locket nervously.
“You did?” He pressed, “I’m flattered, really.. Someone like you really caring about what I do, that was very validating. Would you like my number?”
“Well, what you do obviously takes a lot of work,” Carlos said. “You must be in peak physical condition, especially to drag my fat butt up and throw me around like a rag doll.” He chuckled. But then he was confused. “Well, I dunno about phone numbers. Do you have a Facebook? We can start out with that instead.”
It was in Carlos’ mind that Facebook was a safer alternative to just giving out his phone number right away. It wasn’t anything personal against Skip, he was just practicing basic safety.
