Carlos wandered through the forest. He knew he’d seen a cave somewhere – it looked like an old bear cave, though he hadn’t gone in it before. He wanted to be as far away from his camp and the summer camps, in case the children had an idea to wander around at night to hunt for snipes. The full moon would make visibility perfect for it, so it was a reasonable concern in Carlos’ mind.

He finally came across the cave he was looking for. And not too soon either – the moon would rise probably within the next ten minutes. Carlos ventured forth, holding his flashlight up to search the inside of the cave. Hopefully it was empty. Could a werewolf beat a bear? Maybe?

he looked down at and shifted his paws, unsure how to feel about this

Carlos’ tail stopped moving. Right…

I’m… not going to be like this in the morning, Carlos said. A wolf, I mean. I know you probably don’t like human adults so… I wanted to get out of your fur before then.

And risk being discovered by the children or the counselors, if any of them decided to go for a midnight walk.

his tail swayed softly ‘It Must Be Nice, But Why Not Tonight?’

Carlos thought about how to put this.

Because… you could say I’m having a bad night, and I don’t think I’d be perceived as good company in the state I’m in.

‘You Have Seemed Grumpy All Night..’ he glanced out of the cave ‘.. Maybe You Could Come Back Tomorrow When You’re Feeling Better’

Carlos made a non-committal huff as he carefully arranged his clothes onto the labcoat he laid out.

You said… that you liked the children at the camps just fine, right?

‘Yes, They Give Out Good Treats, Though Some Of The Olders Humans Don’t Like Me Hanging Around..’

Well, that’s understandable. Children are young and could be considered easy prey to some predators.

Carlos was quiet for a moment as he tried to fold his pants with his too-big paws.

What if I told you that one of those children is mine?

he lifted and tilted his head ‘Really? Which?’

Carlos would have smiled. Instead, his tail thumped cheerfully against the ground at the thought of Angela.

The little girl with long, curly black hair. She likes… learning. And she likes… um, human stories with things called ‘robots’ in them. She likes ancient creatures that used to walk the Earth and she’s just… she’s very sweet. And loving. And eager to know everything.

his tail started to wag with the others, his wings twitching slightly “I Think I’ve Seen her Before!’

You might’ve, Carlos said. Though she never mentioned you… she hasn’t been here as long as some of the other kids.

‘I Don’t Remember How Long I’ve Been Here… But Your Pup Sounds Nice’

She is. She’s also human. Carlos hoped that the statement of the obvious would help Drake come to the conclusion Carlos was trying to put down.

he tilted his head slightly ‘She Is?’ wait a minute-

Carlos just looked at him, watching and waiting for his reaction.

after a minute or so, it finally clicked. his wings shifted slightly ‘You’re Not A Wolf, Are You..?’

Carlos huffed in amusement. That’s what I’ve been trying to tell you, he said with a good-natured thump of his tail.

Carlos hadn’t been feeling well when he got up this morning. That didn’t stop him from going down to the lab to work, of course not, but he just felt… different.

As always, while working Carlos had the radio running and he was listening to Cecil’s show in between the weather reports and the eyeless children that showed up at the station to give memos from City Council.

@tenticalkhoshekh

After years of being together Cecil could tell when Carlos wasn’t feeling right but he knew that wouldn’t stop him from going in to do science. Very little things could stop him from just that. So before Carlos left for work he told him to let him know if he needed anything.

As usual, Cecil’s work started later than Carlos’. This gave him some extra time to prepare for the day’s show, well as much as one could with the ever changing news. It didn’t take long before he was at his booth.

After Carlos’s reminder he checked that the On Air sign was in fact on and that he crossed that off of his list before starting his daily show. He was in the middle of the Community Calender when he received a message.

“Oh dear listeners,” Cecil started.

Carlos had to call it quits for the day. He couldn’t focus on anything for the life of him – he couldn’t even focus enough to run tests on himself to figure out what it was.

So, he decided that he needed to head home and shot a text to Cecil.

[TXT] Leaving the lab early today. I’ll see you when you get home. Love you ♥ -Carlos

He didn’t state the reason why because… he couldn’t explain it himself. He just wanted to be home. He was getting ready to go when the announcement about the Community Calendar started, and Cecil seemed to pause when he got to Wednesday. Carlos heard Cecil’s phone going off and realized it was just his text message.

Cecil responded to Carlos reminding him of the left overs in the fridge and when he would be home.

“I love you too,” Cecil seemed to not notice that he was saying his thoughts out loud before he continued his broadcast, “That was Carlos dear listeners. Just letting me know that he is going home early for the day. I do hope that means that he will take care of himself. He seemed rather off this morning before he left..

Continueing with Wednesday it seems like Time of Teeth and Fur is coming upon us once more. Make sure that you are well prepared for you and youre loved ones.”

Carlos had missed the announcement for Wednesday in the time that it took him to go out to his car. But soon the radio was back on as he made his way home, feeling his nerves grow more and more agitated. He didn’t know what was going on with him – it was like something was uncoiling in his chest and his skin itched wherever he had hair. Which was, technically, everywhere on his body.

He just wanted to be home and able to rest up. Maybe get something to eat… something with a lot of protein.

Worked on this girl for 9 months. Now this new music video comes out and she’s immensely popular, arguably one of the most popular characters in the LoL universe.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m really glad she’s a huge hit, it’s super exciting to see so many people love the character design and the gameplay, and know that I contributed directly and significantly to the behind-the-scenes engineering that makes it all work. It’s validating.

But it’s also so fucking melancholy to know I did so much work and put in so much time for such a shitty company, run by shitty people, and the reward I got for it was unemployment.

I threw a lot into this character. I cried at work. I started getting panic attacks, which I’ve never gotten before. I developed persistent heart palpitations from the daily overwhelming stress and had to go to the hospital (this is true, seriously.) I basically dropped all my friends outside of work. My manager (and his manager!) lied to me constantly to keep me working. They said I was doing a great job but to keep it up. Don’t worry, it’s going to turn out great, and it’ll all be worth it in the end – recognition, a raise, probably a promotion in short order. They promised me the world. When she was finally finished, I didn’t even get to go to the release party, they just walked me out.

I remember a quote from my last day, it sticks out in my mind: “I know you realize this is really hard for me,” my manager said. Yes, in the end, when he awkwardly informed me I didn’t have my dream job anymore – or any job at all – and then stared back at my shell-shocked face, my thousand-yard stare, the only thing he felt was sorry for himself.

She launched with no major bugs and was considered a technical success. Doesn’t matter. Get the fuck out.

I don’t know how I feel. A weird sensation of pride and intense bitterness. I did a good job; at least, I think I did. Unfortunately, internal validation is the only kind I’m going to get.

Everyone reposting KDA should see this. Riot has successfully distracted everyone into forgetting their culture of sexism, exploitation, and toxicity mere months after it was all revealed.

Look, I get it. Akali is EXTREMELY my type. It’s obvious how much love and care was put into her development. But it makes me furious to see all the free advertising that Riot is getting from people who I thought would know better.

And now? One of the people who is arguably responsible for all that free advertising? Who’s work is undoubtedly making Riot hundreds of thousands of dollars a day? Who was overworked to the point of near breaking? They get nothing. WORSE than the scant bit of credit that most devs can get in a big company like Riot. They got let go.

Fuck Riot Games.

One thing that I thought really sucked a lot is that the production company who made the KDA video isn’t even credited. They credit a lot of other people on their videos, usually, but the actual animators of the video are hidden; almost a lie by omission. At best it’s a honest mistake, at worst it’s sneakily trying to pass off the video as something made in-house when it’s not. 😦

Have To | Carlos & Standing Bear

standingxbear:

[cont from here]

@the-perfect-scientist

In spite of Carlos’ gut reaction, he really couldn’t argue with that.
He held onto his bag with one hand, trying to keep the strap up closer
to his neck so that his injured shoulder didn’t get too much of the
weight on it. With his other hand he reached out to grip Standing Bear’s
offered arm.

“I feel like an old woman,” Carlos joked with a slight smile on his face.

“An old woman who will live getting across this river. Hold on to me,” Standing bear guided his hands to hold on his around his waist and neck, piggyback style. Once he felt Carlos was secure enough, he walked into the river, quickly reaching up to his neck before he had to swim across.

Carlos was nervous and scared. Honestly, he worried that his weight and grip would impede Standing Bear too much, but at the same time he really, really didn’t want to let go. His Pipboy clicked wildly, warning them of the rads in the water. Carlos wished sometimes there was a way to silence it.

“L-let me know if-if it gets too hard to swim,” Carlos murmured right next to the other man’s ear. He didn’t know what he’d do, but… he didn’t know.
