My Fingers Slipped @partyplanningforsuckers The heat only seemed to be packed in at the circus, with the hundreds of citizens that had swarmed like ants and the intense rides that seemed to have a life of their own. The smell of sugary cotton candy and popcorn was enough to lure anyone who had just come from a days work, the circus was the place to be. With a circle of sand and tigers, along with swinging trapeze and double jointed dancers, the main stage was selling ticket for such a view.

Carlos hadn’t been to a circus in years – not since he was little. But there had been a raffle at work and Carlos had won a coupon for a free ticket. He kinda hoped that his brother and/or his dad were in town so he could invite them to go with him.

Carlos made his way to the ticket office that was set up, standing in the line with his coupon as he looked at everything around him. Some things were different than what he remembered or imagined a circus to be like, but not everything could be a dated cliche trope he supposed.

Once at the ticket office he smiled and offered the coupon. “Hey… this any good?” he asked in a joking manner.

@partyplanningforsuckers

The
acrobat hummed and nodded as he sucked down the packet, squeezing the
blood up closer to his thirsty fangs. “Jake tastes real good- d-do you
think I could have some more, before we leave to hypnotize your team..?”

Carlos looked to Skip with slight surprise. “Uh… you sure? That’s a whole pint, you know. Is… do you need more?” Skip must’ve really been hungry. Did he not eat lunch with Earl?

There
was a very strong part about Skip that made him think how Carlos could
just be looking to humiliate him, but he didn’t have to be remembered by
these people anyway, he could snap away their memories if things went
sour. “Sure.. Yeah, so do you wanna test me first or just get started on
the public image..?”

“We can test it before, if you’d prefer, but I’m alright with having fun with the test,” Carlos said. “But it’s up to you.”

“I’d like to just warm up, if you don’t mind?” He hoped with a nervous smile, “Do you think your colleagues might be upset if I draw their blood?”

Carlos shrugged. “I can’t speak for them. And Jake’s the only one here. What, are you hungry?” He asked it as if he was asking to take him out for pizza again.

The vampire shrugged and glanced away in embarrassment, “Yeah- yeah, just a little bit…” He trailed off and crossed his arms loosely, not meeting eyes.

Carlos nodded. “Okay! Well, we have a store of blood for blood stone use. Would you like a pack?”

“Sure-“ He stuttered and tucked a lock of long pink hair behind his pointed ear, “Do you have B Positive? I’ve kinda got a craving for it..”

“Well, we mostly have A,” Carlos murmured, running a mental inventory of what they have. “Yeah, we do, actually. Jake’s B-positive, so we have a bag of that.” Carlos typed a few more notes into his ipad before he stood up from his chair. “Let’s go to the fridge and get it.”

Skip was almost too eager to get up, jerking up from the chair and hurriedly following Carlos into the break room. “Thank you.. really.” He muttered with hunger in his voice.

“No problem,” Carlos said. “When was the last time you ate, by the way?”

“Blood..?” He attempted to confirm, “The last time I had a fill it was.. about a week ago, it’s getting a bit harder to feed around here.. Everyone I so suspicious.. I can hardly sink my fangs into anyone.”

Carlos nodded in understanding. “Yeah… but again, that has nothing to do with the vampirism. It’s just the town’s attitude toward strangers. I was a fluke – I and my team were liked well enough when we arrived.”

Carlos got to the fridge and opened the door. “Okay… Jake… Jake… where’s your blood, buddy?” After a moment Carlos opened a drawer and plucked up a bag of blood with Jake’s name and type on it, as well as the date of the draw. “Here you go,” he said, offering it to Skip.

“Do you mind my asking why you have blood bags? Not that I’m complaining,” The acrobat smiled warmly and carefully took the bag, folding the top a bit before puncturing it and drinking away to his heart’s content.

Carlos averted his eyes as he busied himself with closing the fridge. “Night Vale citizens make the use of blood and bloodstone magic,” he said. “Most are fine with drawing the blood with a knife immediately at the ritual, but the other scientists and I really prefer to just draw it more painlessly with needles.”

He
held his hand out for the scientist to preform his strange and rather
odd tests, letting his eyes flutter over the needle before pulling them
away and sighing. “I-I didn’t think this would take so long- I kinda
have a lunch date I gotta get to soon.”

“It won’t,” Carlos said. He held the poker device to the pad of his finger. “Little poke,” he warned before hitting the button. A spring released and a small tack shot out, puncturing the skin on the finger. Carlos set the poker aside and quickly grabbed the small glass tube and held it at ready, waiting for the blood to flow.

*yeah pretty much, we could probably just skip the waiting part if you want-*

*Carlos couldn’t stand doing nothing. He bundled up Max in his bloody coat (Making sure to cover his face) and carried him back to his mobile lab. He lay Max down and began to clean and bandage his wounds as best as he could. He wasn’t going to go to the hospital with a “dead” child – people would have questions*

*as Carlos cleaned the stab wounds, he noticed how many other cuts and scraps Max had, most of which were on his arms… a few minutes after Carlos finished patching him up, he awoke with a gasp, shaking and panting softly as he looked around*

*Carlos was startled  and he dropped the first aid kit he was putting away. He looked at Max with wide eyes and quickly rushed to his side.* Oh thank God! I was worried – are you okay, Max? How are you feeling??

*he put a hand over one of the stab wounds, taking a moment to look over the bandages* i.. i-i’m alright i guess, for just coming back from the dead *he chuckles slightly, glancing around* .. where are we..?

Oh – we’re at my mobile lab. I… I didn’t wanna just leave you there, or wait out in the open so… I brought you here to patch you up. I… I hope that was okay, Max… Sorry, I wasn’t able to ask.

*he rubs the back of his neck, glancing away* i-it’s alright.. i don’t think i’ve ever been to your camp.. *he looks down at himself* th-thanks for patching me up while i was.. away

I… had no idea about what else to do. There… were a lot more wounds than I was expecting.

*he frowned softly* oh… wh-where’s my hoodie..?

Oh, it’s… it’s over with my labcoat. *Carlos pointed to a rubbish bag with what looked like blood smeared on the inside* I… I need to go get some Oxyclean or something to clean all that. *He looked at Max* I guess some new clothes for you wouldn’t be a bad idea too, until these get clean.

where to get mote bandages

Country and livestock stores. Gauze, wraps and ointment – it’s all the same thing, just cheaper because it’s marketed for animals instead of people.

really? huh.. well, let’s hope i can get to one of those stores before i bleed out-

Wait, what?? *Immediately pulls off his labcoat and wads it up.* Where are you bleeding from??

oh you don’t have to do that, i’ll pass out and die soon enough so it’s alright.. also the stabs are spread out

Saying that you’ll die is the OPPOSITE of alright, Max! How did this happen??

anon stabbed me six times.. *he coughs up blood into his hand* b-but it’s what i de-deserve..

No – NO, it’s not, Max! People don’t deserve to get stabbed, okay? *Carlos tries to press the labcoat into the bloody parts of Max’s body, trying to help as best as he can*

*he looked down at Carlos’ coat, frowning* i-i do though… yo-you should go before i actually.. you know…

No, Max, you don’t. Ugh, God… Why the hell did they even do that?

*he stumbles slightly* ca-cause i’m a freak of na-nature..!

That’s a stupid-ass reason. It’s a miracle you’re still around, Max! Try to relax… *there was so much blood. Too much – Carlos wondered if Max WAS going to die in front of him.*

hard to re-relax when you’re bleeding out.. *he coughs again, almost falling over* if-if you ever die, don’t di-die by blood loss…

What… should I do, Max? *Carlos can’t save him.He knows he can’t. Dammit…*

wait.. i guess… *his breathing slows as he falls over*

*Carlos is still sitting there with his coat pressed into the wounds of Max’s body. He didn’t know what to do. Just… sit there? Wait for something to happen?*
