~~ CARLOS ~~

Carlos looked up as the young woman approached. What was her name? Viola? They’d introduced themselves, but he was terrible with names. Also, did she approach him that loudly on purpose?

“Uh, well… yeah,” Carlos started to say. But he decided he should probably tell the truth. “Um, well… I’m feeling kind of… off. I need to turn in so… hopefully I can just sleep whatever it is off. You shouldn’t worry about me – I’m fine.” He offered her a slight smile, which he hoped would ease her mind

                                                Her mind was not eased.

Violet lets out a breathy sigh, rolling her eyes,  I used ‘ta work with my dad in a clinic, Carlos. I know things, so maybe I could ‘elp, yeah?  she smiles, OrI could not leave ‘till ya tell me what exactly is wrong. S’yer choice.

She’d seen many people die of sicknesses in the wastes – starting minor, sure, but then the irradiated landscape makes things worse until they ghoulify or die of sickness. She’d never seen it happen herself, and she didn’t plan to.

@the-perfect-scientist

Carlos huffed out a sigh, though it was not meant to sound as annoyed as it did. “I… don’t know what it is,” he said honestly. “I just… I’m just not feeling well. I don’t know if it’s food poisoning or what…” He felt exhausted, but still his nerves seemed to crawl under his skin and he just needed to lay down. Get some sleep. Take the time to unwind, maybe…

That moon seemed so bright. And irritating.

“I just want to go lay down, okay? It’ll probably be better in the morning.”

Carlos smiled at him, trying to shake off the pesky intrusive thoughts about the raging bitch his mother. “I’ll mark it on your calendar for you,” he told Hancock. “Though really… I’m absolutely happy with everything you’ve given me. I really am.” He started to tuck into the last few mouthfuls of his noodles, slurping them up quicker as they’d gotten colder and trying to savor the sodium chloride and other flavors.

“I’d appreciate that, sunshine.” He paused, taking another bite of his noodles and taking a few moments to chew and swallow before continuing. “And uh…. my birthday’s November twelfth. You’re the only one around here who knows that besides Fahrenheit, I’d appreciate it if ya don’t spread that information around.”

“November 12th?” Carlos asked, using his own voice to help commit it to memory. “Alright… got you. And no… of course I won’t tell anyone. Not… especially not if you don’t want me to.” He stirred up the broth with his chopsticks, looking for more noodles. He huffed softly in amusement when he remembered something. “In… back in 1799, um… the first recorded meteor shower was observed in the United States on November 12th. Andrew Ellicott was the guy’s name and… he was sitting on a ship down in what was Florida at the time. I dunno what they call it now… probably ‘underwater’. Heh…”

To
be fair I don’t think she even existed in the first place. When it
happened there was some bright-ass godly white light and she was gone.

She…

I’m definitely calling Mia again. Maybe she has an explanation. But what about the fire? How did it start?

David dubbed it ‘Quartermaster apperciation day’ so we all broke into the Quartermaster store to see what QM’s into and Neil found used barbie dolls and burned them.

Where did he get matches? And how do you ‘use’ Barbie dolls? Were they just second-hand?

I dunno. All I know is Neil was concerned and disgusted and set ‘em on fire.

Disgusted? They’re dolls.

But you guys shouldn’t just burn stuff willy-nilly. I already talked to you about that last night.

Connect the dots dude! You know what QM does like once a month, Neil was disgusted and they were used. At least that’s what I’m assuming Neil meant.

And we’re like 8-11 what do you expect from us.

I – Oh… oh…. OH GOD! I… I understand now.

Dios Mio… *he reaches a hand up to punch the bridge of his nose*

Uh, kiddo? No offense, but you look kinda sick. You feeling okay?

*laughs* hell fucking no, dude

*he
wakes up, almost jolting upright, shoving Carlos’ hands away and
pushing himself back* n-no! *fear and panic clear on his til he slowly
realizes where he is*

*Carlos blinks at the kid, surprised, but he relaxes
slightly.* Hey, it’s okay. You’re okay… how are you feeling?

… *he brings his knees to his chest, looking upset* i feel like shyt… where are we?

At the nurse’s cabin. I’m gonna call an ambulance – unless you’re
feeling okay enough for me to drive you to the hospital?

*his eyes widen* h-hospital ? nononono no hospitals! *he scoots back on the bed*

*blinks* Max, buddy, you’re obviously deathly ill. And for
some asinine reason you had alcohol. You
have to be checked over.

for the l-last time, I. AM. DEAD! look- *he pulls off the bandages on his neck, showing off a large scar* see? and that was just one of the time i’ve died…

*sputters, shocked at the sight. He felt a little sick too*
Jesus – what the hell happened??

*he chuckles slightly* what? never seen a scar like this before?… but it’s pretty obvious what happened… *he began re-wrapping his neck* but i don’t really care about it anymore…

You… you’re not supposed to be alive. I – no offense meant,
really, but… how?

*idk noise and a shrug* i think it has something to do with this camp, i think death actually fears coming here, so no one actually dies…

Uh… that’s definitely strange. I’ve seen strange before… but
I didn’t think I’d find it here. Huh.

*he chuckles* that’s one word for it… do… do we still have to go the hospital..?

*blinks at the kid* Uh, I… you’re sure you’re dead? Should…
can I check you for a pulse? *he’s still unsure. Death wasn’t a new thing to
him, exactly, but he had to be certain*

…. *he unwraps abit of his wrist and holds it out* i’m pretty sure ?

*frowns a bit, but he slowly reached out to take the kid’s
hand. He gently puts two of his fingers on the tiny wrist and tried to feel for
a pulse. There’s nothing, which is pretty distressing. He tries a few more
places, but nothing.* This is… surreal. Again, no offense, Max. I just… you’re
cold, and your blood apparently isn’t moving through your veins.

Huh. You know, I had an affinity for blue hoodies when I was your age.

David: *comes running* OH MY GOSH MAX!

C: He was in the lake! He’s not breathing! *still pushing on the kid’s chest*

*coughs weakly, but not enough to get any water out*

David: HOW DID THIS HAPPEN?! DID HE FALL IN? DONT WORRY MAX WE’LL HELP YOU! *points to angie* GET A FIRST AID KID!

A: Okay, David! *runs off toward the mess hall
to get the first aid kit*

C: He just –  *stops and looks at the other kids*. I – yeah!
He fell in! Obviously! Help me get him breathing! There’s water in his lungs!

*max’s eyes flutter* *he coughs enough that he can make the words* didn’t…fall…tell…them…I..dare…you…

David: what? What’s going on!

C: That’s not important right now! God dammit,
Max! *pushes much harder on his tiny chest – could have broken a rib but he’s
trying to get the water out*

A: *running back with an old plastic first-aid
kit*

*max’s body spasms* n-no. Let…*cough* me…die…

C: *looks at David* You know how to do this
better, don’t you?

A: *sets the kit down by Max’ head and opens
it before moving so the adults could get to it easier.*

*max convulses on the ground* *his lungs are starting to shut down* l-let…die…please…

A: Daddy, turn his head so water can drain. He
needs air too!

C: *nods and turns Max’s head to the side *
David, c an you give him some air? I’ve got his chest.

((you’re playing David >w>

*max pushes everyone away* no…leave…it…

David: *does cpr* *idk how to describe that* max! Stay with us!

*Some kids are getting upset. Angie is
starting to cry and Carlos is just getting frustrated and teary*

C: Max, for the love of God, just cough!
Breathe for me buddy, please! *he’s surprised when teardrops fall down onto his
hands while he’s pushing on Max’s chest*

…stop…I’m…not worth…it *there are tears running down Max’s face*

David: MAX PLEASE! BREATHE!

C: YES YOU ARE! Yes you fucking are! Don’t die, Max! I don’t want you to die! Breathe, Max,

A: *Angie is so scared and crying* D-don’t
die, Max! P-please!

*some of the other kids are freaking out and
crying*

*Carlos puts his weight behind his arms and
gives one really hard push onto Max’ Chest – as hard as he could*

Huh. You know, I had an affinity for blue hoodies when I was your age.

//lol chill max//

No. Don’t. I don’t want to take a ‘day off’ no ones allowed to know that this happens. I have to be fine.

It’s okay not to be fine 100% of the time,
Max. You need a break. It’s okay.

No. I won’t.

*stands up, not having any of it* Come on,
Max, let’s get you to your tent. *reaches down to turn the boy around and start
gently pushing him back towards camp* I’ll find David later.

*smacks his hand away* DONT TOUCH ME! YOU SON OF A BITCH!

*is startled. He frowns, disappointed, but
doesn’t go to push him again* Come on, Max. Let’s go.

Nononononononononononono.

Max – you’ve cried three times in front of me. You’re allowed to take it easy. I’ll explain satisfactorily enough to
David that you won’t get in trouble.

No…I don’t want to…

You need it, Max. You need to just stop for a
bit and settle down. It really helps with coping, I promise you.

No. I’ll be fine. I just need to go…swimming…to clear my head…

//max can’t swim//

You shouldn’t go swimming if the counselor’s
not around to watch you, Max. *pushes on his shoulders again to get the kid
moving* Come on, kiddo.
