“Uh? Oh, um… thank you….Wait, Max? Is that you?”

“Max? No, i’m not- well, technically I am but, no one calls me that anymore.”

“You’re… you’re not? Wait… you’re not my Max, are you?”

“‘Your’ Max? No, i’m not. You can just… you can just call me Pure.”

“Oh… ah… it’s you.” Carlos wasn’t very thrilled with having finally met this kid. “You can call me Mr Ramon.”

“Oh you’ve… heard of me..?” He tilted his head curiously, though the tone of Carlos’ voice intrigued him.

“Yeah – You took Max out on a robbery spree.”

“I- I never-” He sighed, lowering his head. Lying wouldn’t get him anywhere. “Yes. Yes I did.”

Carlos just hummed. “Where are your parents or guardians? Do they know what you’ve been up to?”

He froze. Parents? Guardians? He simply stared at the ground, tears starting to fill his eyes. “I… I don’t..” He could barely talk, a few teardrops hitting the ground. “I don’t have parents…” He whispered quietly, biting his lip.

Carlos blinked at him. Well, damn… he wasn’t sure what to think of now.

“Who takes care of you, Pure?”

“….no one..” He talked quietly, gently wiping some of his tears.

Carlos just stared at him. “How long has it been like this for you?” he asked calmly.

“I don’t…. know…” He shrugged slightly. “As long as I can remember, really…”

“Do you remember any parents? Or anybody before then?”

He shook his head, still not daring to look at the other.

Carlos just hummed. Okay… now wasn’t the time to push on that subject. “When did you meet Max?”

Well, I’m pretty sure if we add anymore water it’ll be too heavy to move, so, I guess it’s good?

*nods* Alright then. Lemme lift it. Make sure there’s nothing in my way?

Mhm, just a couple of little twigs and rocks, shouldn’t be an issue, right?

Right. Okay, keep an eye out for me bud! *he lifts the pot and starts walking* Where’s a good spot to set this?

Maybe like, next to where we build the fire- hey, watch out for the log.

*Carlos immediately stops* Where is it? *he tries to look around the pot to the ground.”

Like right by your feet, just step over it and you should be all good.

How big is it? *he lifts his foot and tentatively starts poking around at the ground in front of him.*

Probably about uh,, *he puts his hands up* that big? Not very,

*Carlos’ foot finds the log and he gently tries to kick it away out of the way* Okay… moving forward…

You should be good to set it down,

Right here? Okay. *slowly lowers the pot toward the ground*

Yeah, *he grabs a couple of the pods from his hoodie*

Okay. So – *the pot touches Carlos’ foot and suddenly tips forward, spilling half the water and scum out in front of him*

Hm. Well shit.

Oh, shoot! I’m sorry, Max. I’ll go fill it up again – hang on. *he turns around with a sigh and carries the pot with one hand back to the lakeside.*

*Max follows Carlos back to the lake, putting the pods back in his pocket* I could actually help carry it this time.

If you want to… I just need to make sure I’m not setting it down on my foot this time. Heh…

Yeah, it’ll be easier with two people.

It would be… but one of us is less than three feet tall. No offense, but it’d be better if we matched closer in height for that to be really effective.

I’m not that short!

*smiles sympathetically. “I’m sorry, buddy… but you kind of are. That’s okay though – you’re about average for someone your age.

I’m not. I’m below average.

What? Why would you say that? How old are you?

which house hold chemiculs are the most deadly?

All of them? None of them? Whichever answer will make you not touch the household chemicals!

What are you doing, Max…?

losing what control i had in shyt-hole i call a life-

Max, is this about you being grounded?

no.. kinda,… i dunno!

Max… I’m sorry about this. I hate grounding you. But I wanted to keep you safe, Max, and teach you to be more responsible for your actions.

*he looks at the ground, mumbling* i know but it still fucking sucks..

I know Max… I’m really sorry. But I’m not letting you touch any household chemicals, especially not over this.

but i’m so borrred, i need something to do!

Then read a book. Or write something. Or, I dunno… I can do science experiment with you, perhaps?

Jon won’t let me near books anymore and i don’t know what to write about, but science stuff sounds fun

Why won’t Jon let you have books? *he’s very confused*

those are three long storys.. two of which you probably wouldn’t even believe if i told you

Boy, I’m from Night Vale. I might believe them. *he smiles a little*

*he chuckles slightly* they’re still pretty long..

Maybe tell me one while we do science. *smiles* Hey, do you want Angie to do science with us? She loves science experiments.

*he nods and bsmiles sloightly* alright i guess i could… wait, who’s Angie?

*Blinks* My daughter. You met her… no, wait… you were just a baby then, weren’t you?

*more confused* you have a daughter? i.. guess i was pretty young then..

It wasn’t very long ago, actually. Like, maybe a couple weeks ago. You… I guess you were under a grey-face curse.
