Uh, kiddo? No offense, but you look kinda sick. You feeling okay?

*laughs* hell fucking no, dude

*he chuckles and kicks his feet excidedly* being a scientist seems fun..!

Oh, it definitely is! And it’s a great feeling to make a discovery, no matter how small.

maybe i could help find out what’s up with black holes!

Maybe you will! Heh… It’s really good to see kids interested
in science, these days…

there are a couple other kids here that like science more then me.. *he looks up at the sky* .. do you ever wonder how it would look or feel if you could see the stars during the day?

*shrugs* Sometimes. Sometimes though, if you look really
carefully, you can see lights in the sky that look like stars – those would be
our nearby planetoid neighbors or even the International Space Station and
other satellites.

internat- internatel– we have a space station? how many satellites are there?

Yeah, there’s a space station. And there’s plenty of
satellites – phone companies and TV companies and weather stations have their
stuff up there.

Uh, kiddo? No offense, but you look kinda sick. You feeling okay?

*he
trembles slightly and takes some tissues* .. t-thanks.. *he dried his
tears quickly and glanced around* c-.. can we go back to talking a-about
fish..?

*he nods* Sure… absolutely. *Carlos plans to talk to the
counselors and try to get into touch with Max’s parents – they need to know
what happened anyway. But he kind of dreads meeting them.*

*he stands up and gently takes Max’s hand to walk him over
to sit at the fire pit* Let’s go sit down. So, when I get the tackle and
license I can teach you how to fish. As a kid, you’ll be able to do it without
a license as long as an adult is watching you.

r-really? *he smiles slightly, looking up at the other* … what’s a ‘tackle’?

Oh, it just means the bait and line and hooks and stuff.

why not just call it ‘fishing kit’ then? *he glances around the fire pit before sitting*

*Carlos just shrugs* I’m not sure – I’m a scientist, not a
vocabulary expert. *he sits down next to Max*

the english language is weird… alot of things are weird if you think about it *he looked out over the lake* but i guess that’s just life..

Yeah. But part of a scientist’s job is finding explanations
for the weird. Not in language, but in life I mean.

but what if you can’t find an explanation? what if there are no explanations? *he tilted his head slightly*

Sometimes that just means we don’t have the technology to
figure it out yet. Like black holes? Where the stuff  that they suck up goes – we don’t know yet.
We don’t have anything that can tell us yet.

… what if you could travel to the future, but when you asked the future scientist about something, they still didn’t know? like you go billions and billions of years in the future but no one knows?

*shrugs* Well, it doesn’t mean that someone isn’t going to
be asking the question. Science is really about asking questions. That’s what
it always is gonna be.

huh.. *he looks back to the lake* i have a lot of questions.. maybe one day i could be a scientist *he smiled softly*

*smiles widely* Absolutely! If you want to, go for it!

Uh, kiddo? No offense, but you look kinda sick. You feeling okay?

Hey. Thanks I guess, an anon gave it to me. Don’t really have a use for it though.

Sure, yeah.

*looks at the kid* You can, uh… ask me if you need anything
as well. I mean, I used to be a male teenager too.

It’s fine. I can probably figure this out on my own.

Well, if you can’t… you know where to find us. Do you need
any help? Like, clothes or something?

Hey, kid. Uh… nice knife.

Maybe you can whittle something? Whittling’s fun.

Yeah, I guess. I don’t have anything to whittle though.

Well, this is the forest. There’s plenty of wood to go around. *He looks at the teenager, considering for a moment* You must be Max’s older brother – you look so much like him. I’m sorry we haven’t met earlier – I”m Carlos. *he smiles politely and offers his hand to shake*

*Max looked a Carlos, confused* Dude, what the hell? I don’t look that different.

*Carlos blinked at him* Uh… I just said you look like him. I’m…
I’m sorry?

Dude, I am Max. This *he gestures to himself* was the anon’s doing.

An… Oh – oh! I
see! Sorry, I didn’t realize it at first! You’re just so… big now. Or, bigger,
I guess. Uh… you feeling okay?

I don’t understand the question?

I’m just asking if it’s weird or… if you feel normal. Or, I dunno, if you have growing pains or something.

I guess? The main issue is voice cracks though.

Ah. That can be embarrassing sometimes. It’s okay, buddy –
you grow out of it eventually. And everyone goes through it.

Pft this isn’t even gonna last that long anyways.

Oh yeah? How long?

Eh, two(2) days at least.

Oh. Huh… I wonder if you’ll be getting any other issues with puberty…

…what?

Itchiness, body odor, hair, intrusive thoughts driven by hormones…. that sort of thing.

Jesus,,

Hey – it’ll be okay. You’ve got David, right? You can ask
him to help you out with some of the more personal stuff. And it’s just a
couple days.
