My…my mom…

She was wrong! *he says it almost sharply. He
sighs and tries again.* She was wrong. She shouldn’t have said something like
that to you, Max.

But…she’s my mom…kids are supposed to listen to their parents…right? They’re supposed to love their parents…

But sometimes parents aren’t perfect. And they
can be very wrong. My brother… my mom thought he was useless. He can’t walk,
but he’s a brilliant software engineer. She was wrong about him. And your mom…
she was wrong to say something like that to an impressionable child like you.
Yeah, you can love your mom, but that doesn’t mean she can’t do anything wrong
ever.

I just…I don’t know what to do…

That’s okay, Max. You’re just a kid. You’re
already doing the most important thing, which is talking to an adult who wants
to help you.

Huh. You know, I had an affinity for blue hoodies when I was your age.

They didn’t even care…

But I do, Max. It was a traumatic event and
you shouldn’t have had to see it. It’s also a tremendous loss that I can’t even
fathom. I’m so sorry that it happened. *gently wipes his face again. Shifts until
he’s sitting cross-legged in front of him*

Why do you care? You barely even know me! What’s it to you if I killed my father?

To me? To me, you’re suffering with a
knowledge that isn’t actually real. And I know that is extremely painful. My
mother couldn’t handle children… and I thought she couldn’t handle me.

I’m not sorry that I care about you, even
though we just met. I apologize if you’re not okay with that… but I do care.

It’s real! I killed him! He’s gone! And it’s all my fault!

Max, you didn’t kill him. You went to go get
your toy. It was a complete accident. Your dad wanted to protect you, and he
did.

Yeah but…

He protected you. What happened was a
consequence of that. It was an accident, Max, I promise you.

But she told me…it was my fault…

*frowns at that* Who told you?

Huh. You know, I had an affinity for blue hoodies when I was your age.

Firework Safety (closed w/ sungpraise)

sungpraise:

Angie heard yelling and looked around. Where
was David? Was that his voice?

Ered was lighting a spark fountain and Nerf
had found a big, red, funny-looking Firework with no label. They lit them and
ran away to watch with the other kids.

Suddenly though, the red firework let off with
a loud BANG! that had Angie’s ears ringing. Most of the kids fell over from the
force of the bang, or from shock, and when Angie was back on her feet she saw
that one of the trees had fallen over onto the fireworks. The spark fountain
was going off within the branches, and a couple of the kids screamed.

“It’s going to catch fire!” Neil shrieked.

“Oh no! Where’s David?” Angela asked. “We need an adult!”

He couldn’t see what was going on but that horrible bang scared the hell out of him. David’s heart was pounding, his ears aching. Where was the quartermaster? Where was anyone that could help? He silently hoped that Cameron would come in and save the day again.

“Kids!” David called as loud as he could, struggling against the ropes and feeling the uncomfortable burn start to form on his skin from it. “Someone, untie me, please!”

There was the fear for the kid’s safety but something about what he said and the fact he was bound set off a wave of panic he couldn’t place. The situation hit him with inexplicable deja vu. He felt like he couldn’t breathe, tears stinging at his eyes.

“Help me!”

The bang and screaming had Carlos running
toward the smoke faster. Quickly he emerged from the forest and saw cabins, a
flagpole, and a bunch of running and screaming children. “Everyone, away from
the fire!” he exclaimed, and he broke the lock on the extinguisher before
running to the tree. He started to blast the fireworks inside with cold CO2
foam.

Anglea was surprised when she realized she
recognized the labcoat and the black hair not unlike her own. “Daddy!” she
cried, running up to him.

“Angela??” Carlos said, shocked. “Angela, stay
back! Does anyone have a phone!?”

“David does!” Angela said. “Where’s David?”
She looked around at the other campers. “Is he tied to the flagpole again?”

Carlos looked at his daughter incredulously. “What??”

Huh. You know, I had an affinity for blue hoodies when I was your age.

I…I
was five years old. Me and my father were walking near a park, and I
was holding my favorite toy //itsmrhoneynuts//. At one point, I realized
I had dropped it, and spotted it in the road. I ran out to get it, not
realizing there was a car coming. My dad saw this and ran into the road
and pushed me out of the way…*he trails off, needing a moment before he
can continue*

*just listens. His knees are starting to hurt –
he’s not young anymore – but he’s just listening.* It’s okay, Max. Take your
time.

Well…the car came and…hit him. Somebody called 911 and the ambulance came but…*tears fill his eyes again* my mom is an alcoholic and she never cared about me. She still doesn’t. She didn’t care about my dad either. She has a boyfriend now who’s about 15 years younger than her, and they both hate me…sometimes…they would…*he stops* um…

*bites his tongue for now. Max wasn’t done
talking yet*

Go on, Max. If you’re okay with telling me.

H…hit me…they would hit me…and yell, and…they were just…*max breaks off, sobbing*

*puts a hand on Max’s shoulder and gives it a
squeeze. He fishes out another tissue from his pocket and gently starts to wipe
at his face. His heart hurts for the boy.* I’m here, Max. It’s okay to cry…
there, there, buddy…

*max collapses to the ground and just sits there sobbing* I…I…I…I’m sorry…

You didn’t know. You didn’t understand. It
wasn’t your fault. I’m sorry that happened to you, Max. I’m so sorry that
happened.
