Yeah… okay. Just… be gentle about it. Politely curious. Okay.

*Looks at the tent* Hey, uh… hey Max? It’s me, Carlos. @dedmaxsearchhistory

*the tent was completely quiet, not even the sound of a restless duck could be heard*

*Carlos was confused. He gently slapped the door of the tent, letting it flap a little noisily* Max? You in there, buddy?

*he heard one of the ducks waddle over to the door and quack annoyedly*

*So a duck was awake – but where was Max? Carlos wasn’t sure what to do. He tried one more time.* Max?

*Max finally tiredly groaned, half yelling out to Carlos* whaat…

*Oh good, Max was there* Hey, Max…. it’s me, Carlos. Uh… how are you doing? Do you… mind if I come in?

hmh.. no.. wait- i mean yeah! just- wait out there..! *sounds of shuffling and muttering*

*Smiles and just waits.*

Carlos hummed. “I dunno… must’ve slept wrong,” he murmured. He took a deep breath and felt some more bones crack. “Ugh… that’ll stick with me for a while.” Carlos held his hand out for Cecil’s. “C’mon… we got work to do.”

Cecil accepted Carlos’s hand with a sympathetic smile, a bit worried, as ever, for his husband. He nodded, and reached to rub the scientist’s back with his free hand.

        “Are you sure, honey?”

“A scientist is always sure,” Carlos said with a smile. “Even when he’s not. I’ll be fine, Ceec… a hot shower at the end of the day will make it all better. Or at least trick me into thinking it’s better.”

“Fair enough,” Cecil said kindly, accepting the answer as best he could. He nodded and returned the smile; hesitantly, but genuine all the same. “I’ll get started on the day, then. Make calls, pry on things. Do you want me to make you coffee? Breakfast?”

It was strange thinking that he himself would neither need nor even want these things. He felt a little bit detached from himself thinking on this, and tried to shake off the thought.

“If you have time,” Carlos said. “I don’t think I’ll be long, though, taking care of business.” A thought then occurred to him, which made Carlos frown. “Is… do you think the sun’s out? I haven’t looked out side yet…” Of course not. THey’d been together the entire morning so far.

Carlos just smiled at him. “Maybe another time,” he repeated. He then looked sheepish as he continued working. “Sorry, I just… It was gonna bug me for a while, not remembering the word. I’m just glad I remembered it now, and not in the middle of the night when I’m trying to sleep or something.”

Carlos removed another component from the terminal – the holotape drive. He looked it over, considering. “How often do you use holotapes?” he asked.

“It’s alright, heh, I understand.” He chuckled, dropping the subject of smutty literature as it seemed the other wasn’t interested in the topic at this point anyway. He turned his attention back to the terminal, watching as Carlos worked and letting out a soft hum at his question. “I don’t use ‘em too often but occasionally, why? Is that thing broken or somethin’?”

Carlos shook his head. “Not yet, but almost,” he said. He showed Hancock the drive. “Some of the soldering in the connections are eroded,” Carlos explained, pointing to a couple spots on the attached board. “If you hear a zapping or a sort of almost grinding, clicking noise when trying to run a holotape, then that means that the electricity is actually jumping to connect.”

Tony
watched him and smirked more seeing his response. It was good, damn
good, and honest too. Not some answer the guy expected them to want. He
nodded along slowly before going back to his tablet and working on his
own little plans on there.

“You can help program the systems for those machines if you would
want to. They need something in there to help compensate, one of our
colleges has been paralysed and Tony built him a leg system so he can
walk. He wants to make them more comfortable and more accessible to
others while we work on treating the cause.”

“He was a good friend, kinda my fault he was in that position in the
first place, not fair to let him suffer when he never was like that. The
guy is too smart to waste in a chair, now he can still work and still
flies in a suit with me but yeah.”

Carlos smiled slightly. “For some though, it’s not about ‘until
treatment’,” he responded to Stark. “It’s about accessibility and freedom. My brother: he’s
paraplegic. He hasn’t walked since birth. It’s better to ask him about it, but for him he’d rather be
able to be spontaneous and go someplace without having to call ahead and asking
if it’s wheelchair-accessible. He’s not exactly ‘wasting away’ either – Mikey’s
self-employed. He works repairing folks’ computers, TVs, and gaming consoles. Just…
anything that can be considered ‘smart’, really. I actually worked with him
while I was looking for work.” Carlos grinned. “I, uh… literally did the heavy lifting for him.”

Corny as hell, but Carlos thought it was funny.

But then Carlos thought about Tony’s friend. He said he ‘flew
in a suit’ with him. He… he wasn’t talking about War Machine, was he?

Tony smiled hearing the other’s reply. “Yeah, I get that, it’s more giving them their legs back with machines until we can do it without you know? That’s what I’d meant, sorry if it came across as rude.” He ran a hand through his hair and licked at his lips a little anxiously. “He told me it felt great to walk but they aren’t all that comfortable so I want to be able to repair the nerves, might even mean we can fix brain tissue too if we get far enough ahead. Help those who had brain injuries or those who struggle with dementia. Just…I think of everything I can do for everyone but it usually starts pretty close to home.” He laughed softly at the joke and smiled. “That’s a good one, you’ll have to tell Rhodey that, I’m sure if you work with us you’ll meet him.”

Tony like this guy, he seemed smart and kind and well mannered and nothing like the other’s he’d seen from Hammer Tech. He was just glad he could give the guy a chance.

“Are you finished Carlos? Or do you need some more time?”

Carlos smiled, a bit anxious himself. “Oh, I didn’t mean that you were rude, Mr Stark, I just… no, I understand what you mean, now that you’ve explained.” He smiled a bit wider, glad that Stark thought he was at least a bit funny. “If I ever get the opportunity to meet Colonel Rhodes, sir, I’ll be sure to remember it.”

This was going so well, Carlos thought. He wondered if he was imagining things, but he really wasn’t sure one way or the other. And it was getting pretty close to the moment of truth.

“Almost done,” he said, looking back at his draft. He chewed on his lip a bit before writing down a couple more points that he wanted to be sure to remember. He then set the pencil down and looked between Mr Stark and Ms Potts. So… how do you want to do this?” he asked. He wasn’t sure if he should start explaining it or if they wanted to start with the supplemental portfolio he brought.

🐺

Send “🐺” to find out my muse is a werewolf!

A lot has changed in the way of how people viewed werewolves. When Carlos was young, there was still a massive stigma against them. Things had gotten better, but Carlos still hesitated to tell anyone about his… affliction.

But Carlos couldn’t keep hiding in his room at night forever without a word about it to his friend. Especially when Carlos absolutely botched his third attempt at brewing the Wolfsbane potion… he only had a couple days left before he had to start taking it if he wanted to keep his mind intact.

This was going to be a very awkward conversation to have and Carlos hated bringing it up. But he had no place safe to go to for the time being, and he needed the help.

“Uh, Hancock… do you mind if I talk to you about something?”
