Black
Hat was now outside, watching this with the utmost amusement. He
laughed loudly, smirking widely. This was extremely entertaining!

Wha – laughing? Carlos was hearing laughing. Another lap around the front gate of the mansion and Carlos could see a tall figure out of the corner of his eye. He recognized it as the top-hat man he met yesterday. And he was laughing at Carlos getting chased by a possibly malicious robot. That was so ill-mannered of him.

But Carlos had other things to focus on. Like the math problem in his head…

“Hey, robot! Can you do calculations?” he called back to the metal behemoth behind him.

But either the robot couldn’t, or he just didn’t want to talk, the robot didn’t answer him. But instead, he sped up, clawed hands reaching for the human he was trying to catch. Black Hat smirked wider and watched, eager to see the human be caught.

Carlos yelped and tried to go faster. He could practically
feel the inches between the tails of his labcoat and the thing’s claws. Ugh!
Okay – maybe something simpler?

“This sentence is
false!”
Carlos screeched.

The paradox somehow worked. And, to Black Hat’s shock and horror, the sentinel froze and began glitch out before its circuits fried. Now Black Hat was beyond pissed off, shaking with rage.

Carlos slowed to a jog before finally stopping. He bent over with his hands on his knees as he gasped for breath. “Okay… gotta work out more,” he murmured to himself.

Still panting he stood up straight and looked back at the robot. He felt bad about breaking it. He checked his danger meter and found that it was in the orange zone. Not immediate danger, it seemed… he started walking toward the robot, keeping an eye on the meter. He wanted to see if he could reset it and send it back to its charging dock without hurting it any more.

From the stars

Peter sighs as he flops down on his bunk and starts dialing up the signal for terra. They were goi g to be close and he knew if carlos said he wanted to see Yondu then they would visit. “Hey Carlos! Hehe. So we’re gonna be the closest we have been since we left only a few jumps away from terra. I really want to visit but you know how dad is…. he won’t come unless you call him… something about getting in your way or something. Damn man I miss you. Oh and tell your dad I’d loooove a life time supply of those tamales!”

A call from Peter was just what Carlos needed and he answered the communicator tired, but happy. “Pete, it’s so good to hear from you,” he told the younger man. “You’re close? What brings you to our back-water part of the galaxy? Heh…”

“A mission of some sort that I wasn’t allowed to go on……. was soooo stupid….. dad got shot in the arm…. would not have happened if I’d been there. But noooooo. Heh. So yeah I mentioned to dad to come by but he said not unless you invite us. Something about you being busy and stuff.”

Carlos wasn’t busy. Wasn’t busy at all. At least, not in the way he really wanted to be.

“I’m never too busy for you guys! Absolutely – swing by if you can! We’ll have dinner,” Carlos said, smiling.

“Awesome!!!” There was the sound of peter running then jumping on the bed the camera going all crazy then a flash of blue and glowing red. “Dad! Carlos says we can come visit! Common get up!!!”

“BOY GET OFF ME!!!! FUCK OWWW!!! PETER JASON QUILL GET BACK HERE!!!”

Carlos chuckled. God, he missed these peoples’ craziness.

“Yondu, you but holes in that boy I’m never buying you ice cream again,” Carlos pretended to scold, speaking loudly into the comm to make sure Yondu could hear him.

Yondu takes the com and sets it down so it showed him sitting up in bed shirtless and peter in a head lock getting tickled to death. “Now come on carlos. That’s just playing dirty.” Grins at him. He had a few bandages but didn’t look to bad.

Carlos blinked at Yondu, a little surprised at his state of
undress. Did Peter call in the middle of the night shift?

Carlos cleared his throat and smiled. “Um, so… How are you
guys doing? Not getting into too much trouble I hope?”

Yondu grins at him. “We’re ravagers always getting into trouble hehe.” Yawns a bit and let’s peter go as the boy plops down on the bed next to him. “Little shit woke me in the middle of the night cycle..”

Carlos sighed. “Peter…” he chided gently, looking at the lump of human teenager next to Yondu.

Peter grins. “Only time I can call you man especially with us being so close! And this grump is happy and he knows it!”

Yondu whacks down with a pillow. “Go back to sleep or when we do get to terra you’ll be here scrubbingbthe floors!”

Carlos smiled at Peter. He folded his arms on his desk and leaned in closer to the viewscreen on the communicator. “I’ll talk to you in a bit, Pete,” Carlos promised. “After Yondu and I iron out some details about you guys swinging by here.”

Peter huffs But then nods and jumps off the bed Yondu smirks hearing kraglins grumpy shout as peter returned to the shared bed with the older boy. “These boys are gonna be the death of me.”

Carlos just kept smiling. “But you love every minute of it, don’t you?” he asked. He propped his head up on one of his hands and looked at Yondu. “How are you doing, big guy?”

Yondu lays back floating the pad above him yawning. “I’m living. Missing you… that hasn’t changed. Just got done with another hybernation… Krags is coming out of his…. hence why peters sleeping with him. Pete either sleeps with me or krags…. sometimes Tullk or Jamie…… or Oblo never is away from someone he doesn’t trust…. never sleeps alone either. He’s been talking to someone. It’s a over comms so we can still travel. He did a lot of crying for a while…..a lot of clinging but I think he’s better now… to a point.”

Carlos hummed and nodded. “That sounds pretty normal,” he
said. “I mean, at least by human standards. We – especially kids – have a habit
of clinging onto things and thinking things are our fault. So it’ll be a while
to break him of that. But if you think he’s getting better, then I trust your
judgement. He’s… he’s not begging to go back to Earth when he’s in crisis mode,
is he?”

“Not as much. Only when he gets really upset….. keeps saying he’ll go live with you though with the argument. Kid loves you.”

Carlos chuckled. “Yeah… um, I’m glad he does,” he said. Though Carlos wasn’t sure if that should ever happen. As it stood, he was still unemployed – unemployed for a whole year, in fact. It was getting harder to explain why he hadn’t been hired yet, because really he didn’t know. He was living with his dad and his brother right now, and Mikey was the only one making any money with his software and software repair work. Carlos would really prefer Pete to stay with Yondu where he can be cared for and not feel guilty about being one more mouth to feed.

“Oh- I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to run into you. I don’t want any trouble I promise, I just –” Carlos paused when recognition dawned on him. “Oh, um… hello again. Um… Kiara, right?” ((fallout au — i made him misremember her name on purpose ;3 I hope this is ok))

distantpagesandpapercuts:

distantpagesandpapercuts:

There’s a small moment of confusion on her face before it is replaced with the same recognition. Kira smiles a bit, impressed that he remembered her at all.

Even if incorrectly, it was close enough.

“Kira, but yeah.” She nods happily, “It’s been awhile, I honestly didn’t expect to see you ever again!” A small giggle escapes her, “I’m afraid I cannot recall your name, I’m horrible with names. But I remember, from Concord right?”

Carlos was shocked when she immediately offered the coffee
and before he could even utter a word she was gone. Oh, dammit… she really didn’t
have to cater to him. He… he wasn’t worth it. He was really just trying to make
small-talk and be funny (at his own expense). He couldn’t help but think that
he shouldn’t have said anything.

As ordered though, he didn’t make any complaint. He just
gave her an awkward smile and a nod in thanks as he took the cup. When she
asked him what he wanted he hesitated for a moment. He had to drink the coffee
now, of course, but it would be an awful waste if it wasn’t done anywhere close
to the way he liked it.

“Um, if… if it wouldn’t put you out too much, some sugar and
a bit of milk would be great,” he admitted softly. He cleared his throat a
little anxiously. “Um, if… it’s up to you how much you are willing to pay for
the books. I, uh… I hate to say this, but the old city isn’t fun trying to
navigate through. I’m not sure how often I’d make it through to come to Diamond
City. The business… it needs to be worth it… do you understand what I’m saying?”
God, he hoped he didn’t sound mean or anything. He thought it was a reasonable
response but who knew with some people.

He took the cup, but seemed so out of place still. She wasn’t exactly a hostess she deduced. Perhaps it just wasn’t in her to wait on others. Though dammit she tried.

Kira nods to his request, heading back to the kitchenette and shuffling around in the cabinets that hung above it.

“Yes I understand. You want a price worth going through the death trap that is the old ruins right outside this town.” She smiles bringing him a small ceramic bowl of sugar and a milk bottle. “Feel free. Don’t drink much milk myself in all honesty.”

She sits in a seat next to him, taking her black tea in hand. Blowing into her cup gently, she takes a sip.

“It’s difficult getting here. I’m not asking you to go out of your way to bring me these books of course. Just saying that if you happen upon any and are heading my way anyhow, I’d be happy to pay you for it. In fact, you can just leave them for me here or in Goodneighbor if I’m not home. I’m sure I could leave money for you. Doctor Sun would be happy to deal with you for me if I’m not home. Now… as for price…” Kira huffs, leaning back in her chair and crossing her legs. Thinking upon something that may interest him. Something fair.

After all, it was just scrap to others anyway. And most of the time worth nothing at all.

“How about… twenty caps for books that can be fixed? But at that price I cannot guarantee that I’ll be able to buy all that you may bring me for good chunks of caps. And I have to be able to use them. I rewrite the parts that were burnt off, but I cannot write an entire novel. You know? If you find anything pre war, I’ll give you fifty each.” Kira offers. Books were her weakness, she may be too generous. But even if he asked for more, Kira would likely be open ears.

Carlos just watched her and listened as he listened to her.
He tried to be discrete with how much sugar he put in his coffee – he really liked sugar, but he didn’t want
to seem like some kind of pig with it. He realized he probably should cut back
anyway – it wasn’t exactly easy for him to get dental care anymore.

However, Carlos found himself shocked by Kira’s offer. Twenty
caps? That was two nights at the Dugout Inn, or a noodle bowl from that
malfunctioning robot in the market. If Carlos were to bring even a couple of
those books, along with his usual salvage he could take a load off and spend a
few days in Diamond City. He might not… but he could! And if he found a pre-war book tucked away in a suitcase or
something? It’d be even better!

“I… uh, are you sure? That’s – er, I mean, that’s pretty
generous of you,” he told her truthfully. He might be shooting himself in the
foot asking that, but he’d rather there not be a falling out or anything later
if she regretted the price.

Not so Villainous (closed w/ theblackestofhats)

theblackestofhats:

His
mind wandered as he waited for Carlos to finish ensuring everything
was ‘just-so’, and he didn’t quite realise how long it took, only
that it likely wasn’t as swift as it could have been. When the
scientist did emerge, he raised a brow at the regretful note
to his tone, wondering what had set that off. His guess was
incorrect, but his addressing of it possibly covered the correct base
anyway. “The storage area isn’t much of a lab, I know, but you can
transfer your equipment to the lab proper later.”

Ahhh,
questions… they were valid queries, it was true, and he took a
moment to mull them over, humming slightly. “You study the weird,
the supernatural included – things many other scientists would
disregard or gloss over. That’s useful – an appropriately
scientific analysis of many such things is sorely lacking, and that
isn’t really my existing scientist’s area.”

As for how long? He
paused again, tilting his head as he observed the man, trying to
figure out the best way of approaching the idea. “I didn’t have a
set time limit in mind. I don’t intend to prevent you from
venturing outside, or even from conducting further tests in that
bizarre desert, but I do intend to employ you.”

Carlos lifted an eyebrow at the mention of a lab. “That
would be –“ Carlos stopped himself, as he had to still clear some stuff up
first.

“Um, well, I’m very flattered that you seem to think my work
would be of use to you, Mr Black Hat,” Carlos told him. “But… I’ve just gotta say,
there’s, um… ways to get my attention, you know. You, uh… it wasn’t necessary
to take me in the middle of a field study. I have an email – and I would have
gladly linked you to a profile and résumé
page that… well, that frankly isn’t just my personal blog that’s just full of
personal, non-professional projects that I work on.”

Had he read the study thread about the Literal Rock Band?
Probably. Some people outside of Night Vale probably would think it was
entirely fictional and that Carlos had a far-too-active imagination.

An idea struck Carlos and he pulled out his phone. He started to set up alarms all over his calendar, the subjects simply reading his dad and his brother’s names. He couldn’t let himself forget about them again.

The prospect was horrifying. If he forgot his own family…

“I’ve got to leave now. Tonight.” he said, quietly. “If you want to come with me, Carlos, you can, but I can’t risk losing anything.”

He had little enough already.

Carlos blinked at Sylvain, surprised. “Wait, you – you are?” he asked.
“Wha – but what if something happens? There needs to be some planning to
ensure safety and… I just don’t know if it’s a good idea to be so

A Holiday Surprise (closed w/ selfmedicatingmayor)

Carlos sat there silently for a moment. He blinked up at Hancock, a little dazed from the kiss, but then he blinked himself to awareness. “Oh, uh – yeah, hang on,” he said.

Carlos wanted to finish up his bowl before the broth got cold again so he picked up the bowl and quickly started to drink it down, getting some soaked into his mustache. Carlos set the empty bowl down with a satisfied sigh and stood up.

“It’s down in the workshop,” he said, wiping his mouth on his sleeve – the shirt needed to be washed soon anyway.

His smile softened as he watched him, that dumbfounded look he got sometimes when the ghoul kissed him always gave him a fluttery feeling. God, how could one man be so damn cute?

Hancock gave his own bowl a look as Carlos drained what was left in his, considering it for a moment before lifting it to his lips and taking a few little sips before setting it down again. “I’ll let ya lead the way, handsome, I’m right behind you. I’m curious to see what you have in store for me, heh.”

Carlos smiled at him, very eager to show Hancock his present. Without thinking much about it he took hooked his arm around Hancock’s and gently tugged him toward the door.

“I really think you’re going to like it,” Carlos told him. “I spent quite a while finding the right hardware for it and it took me just as long making sure everything worked just right.”

The Vampire of Night Vale

welcometocecilpalmer

Cecil smiled despite himself, despite the situation at hand. It
was a tired smile, but a deep one, fond and full. He breathed in slowly
and felt a little bit more alive for Carlos’s ministrations, a little
less like… like a corpse. Like a vampire.

“You may be a scientist,” he whispered lovingly, “and a great scientist, the smartest there is… but you’re also my husband.”

Carlos’s pain and fear for him still cut Cecil like a knife
into his cold white skin, but the radio host was also warmed by that
love that Carlos had for him that was greater than Science, greater than
life and all that filled it. It was the love that Cecil had for Carlos,
too, impossible to contain, keeping him alive (pretty literally, to be perfectly honest).

“Yeah, I guess I am. I think you’re right… Thank you for taking such good care of me.”

Carlos glanced at Cecil. “Oh –– absolutely, honey!”

He reached out and grabbed a couple of the stones from the table before turning back to Cecil.

“I would absolutely do anything for you. I may be very uncertain with what we are dealing with at the moment, Cecil, but there are two things that I know: I love you.”
