Why don’t you ask the platypus? *max points behind carlos*

*confused, Carlos looks. He jumps, startled* Oh – oh my goodness, it’s in a tree! What the… oh my gosh, that is a platypus.

Yeah. We call her ‘Muack’. It’s the sound she makes. She ate one of her babies.

Uh… well, animals do that. Wait, how did she have eggs? Is there a male running around?

Dunno. We just found her with eggs. All her other ones died and she ate the last one that me and Nikki took care of. She’s terrible but we still love her.

Huh… well, just don’t let her have another clutch of eggs, I guess. *looks at the platypus* Um, hey, sweetie… wanna come down here? It’s dangerous to be up in a tree…

She knows what she’s doing.

*the platypus hisses at carlos, nearly falling off the branch*

Oh! Be careful, honey… She doesn’t seem like she’s been handled a lot. Is she feral?

No? What does that mean?

It essentially means that if you sit watching something that takes a long time, like watching a pot of water boil, your perceived passage of time extends to almost excruciating lengths.

Kinda like how if you try to cook food the microwave seconds seem longer than normal seconds?

Exactly.

Hm. But then how’re we gonna know when the pod pops and stop the timer?

Hm, good point… man, if only I had a high-speed camera so that I could go frame by frame…

*max pokes the pod lightly with a stick* or we could just,, watch it?

Yeah… hey, don’t poke it – you might accidentally puncture it.

*max looks carlos dead in the eyes and pokes it again, rasing his eyebrows*

*eyebrows raised* Well, you’re a little ball of defiance, aren’t you?

I am f u e l e d by spite.

Hah! That explains a lot about you, buddy.

Just about everything I do is out of spite. They told me I couldn’t wear a hoodie all summer. I’m doing it anyway.

Oh yeah? You ever heard of heat stroke? *Carlos was just teasing him of course*

Yeah.

Okay… wearing a hoodie increases that chance. You’re drinking lots of water, right?

Yeah. I don’t wear it to sleep though.

Okay. Make sure to drink so you don’t get exhausted and all that. *he looks into the pot of water*

Yeah, yeah. Is it gone?

It’s shrunken a bit… it must’ve broke someplace already.

Cool. How long was that?

Just over three minutes. That was quick… *concerned face*

Let’s try it with clean- or semi-clean water and see how long it takes to compare

Alright. Let’s see… does the scum look like it’s thinned out any?

*he picked some scum up with a stick* I don’t think so,,

Huh… stir it in? See how it is?

*he stirred the scum in* nothin’

Huh… interesting. Alright then. Let’s go dump this behind the mess hall, then head inside for the control. *he stood up*

K. *he stood up and tossed the stick to the side*

*Carlos picked up the pot and nodded to Max.* Okay – let’s go.

*Max nodded* I’ll spot from the front *he headed over to behind the mess hall, kicking the wall of the QM store in the process*

*Carlos walked carefully, keeping an eye on the ground ahead of him as he went*

I don’t think it’d really matter if it spilled since we’re done with it?

Well, we should keep it away from the forest since it’s got two tide pods in it. And I”m not about to put pond scum in the sink inside. Lord knows what the QM would do to me if I did…*Carlos could already imagine it, and he got nervous at what he thought of. He shuddered.* So, behind the mess hall where it can safely be deluded by rain water is a good spot I think, without immediately impacting the environment while the detergent is so concentrated.

Yeah sure. I’m pretty sure QuarterMaster wouldn’t give a shit anyway.

Well, yeah, there’s that… but then your dishes would be washed with pond scum water. And I don’t think you want that either. *there’s a dumpster and he walks up next to it to pour the pot out.*

That’d be kinda terrible- hey check if the platypus is in there first.

The platy- You guys have a platypus? Uh, okay… check if it’s there for me I guess? I’m holding the pot.

Uh-huh *max takes a fairly large stick and opens the dumpster top Cautiously looking in* all clear.

Great. *he sets the pot on the ground and turns it over.* So… a platypus?

Yep. The old mascot was kinda,,, thrown into the lake so David made us all look for a new one and Nikki & Neil found a platypus. Then the old mascot returned but then got eaten by said platypus so now we’re the ‘Camp Campbell Pussies’.

That was wild.

Ah- No, you’re not. That’s, uh…. that’s for cats. You guys are… the Platy-People. Definitely not… that other thing.

Wait, you just found a platypus in the woods? In the wilderness of America?

I didn’t. I was with QuarterMaster. But, yeah we found a platypus.

How in the hell did a Platypus get loose in North America, far from its native home in Australia?

Peter
slides into the car and slides to the middle seat and snuggles back up
against Kraglin and to relax as they head back. He took kraglins hand on
his and starts rubbing along his palm and wrist knowing it calmed and
relaxed him.

Kraglin just sat there, making low growling-type noises. It was crazy – the bloated feeling he had seemed to be getting better now. Just a bit at least.

Carlos drove them home, still feeling kind of jittery and paranoid. They’d made a bit of a scene – did that mean someone was going to come after them? God, he hoped not. Or if someone was, they come after Yondu and the boys left. Can’t confront about aliens with no aliens around…

Peter snuggles him continuing his rubbing.

Once back at the house it was to find two new faces. Half but and Tullk were there the excuse was halfnut wanted to collect some wild herbs from earth to see if he could make something from it and why not visit there captain and other crew while they were at it.

Coming in and seeing Tullk talking and laughing with his dad like the were old friends… Carlos’ first thoughts were to the ship. “Who the hell is watching the ship?” he asked.

Tullk just shrugged. “Ship’s in the night cycle. Yer planet’s a bit on the fast side of standard. Anyway – the night crew’s got the ship and everyone else is sleepin’.”

“Ya got permission from Yondu ‘fore comin’ down, right?” Kraglin asked him.

Half was over near the table scanning some of the herbs and spices he’d found in the garden. “O..of c.co…course we did. W..we a..al always listed to the c..captain..” he frowns holding up a green leaf of some kind. “Hmmmm… this is listed as…a ..a n.nar ..narcotic…”

Edwardo looked. “Oh, that looks like hemp. People use it for oils and to make paper…. though I’m not sure where you found that…”

Carlos frowned at it. “Did that come from the forest?”

Half but nods. “Just.. s… south of. Y..you garden…. I. F.. f.. found some. T..tasty mushrooms too.” Looks over at Tullk and smiles at him.

Yondu hums. “Half I told ya not to wander past the garden….”

Half frowns. “S..Sorry I.. just saw a.. interesting p..plant…”

“It’s not dangerous,” Carlos told him. “Just… don’t leave any of it here. Make sure to take it with you when you go back to the ship. It’s kind of illegal here to have more than an ounce or so.”

“Sounds like I may have to… ‘stumble’ upon it myself later,” Mr Ramon said with a frown. “After you boys are back in space of course… we don’t want the police asking you all questions.”

Half finished and stores the plants before siding up against Tullk. “I know there have to be more herbs and spices …. but this is what I have..”

Tullk nodded with a smile, reaching around to rub at his shoulder. “I think that’ll keep ya busy fer a while, huh Jamie? Make sure you keep all that green ‘hemp’ stuff with you until we get to the ship.”

Half smiles and nods leaning against him and shivers. “Cold…..”

Peter blinks then grabs the bag with the blanket and brings it over. “I… got it for you…. it’s a electric blanket…. will keep you warm….”

Half blinks and takes it looking it over. “I…. thank you petey….”

Tullk lifted an eyebrow at the gift, but he gave Peter a grin. He reached up and rubbed the boy’s head. “Yer’a good ‘un, Pete. The Captain did right by you.”

Peter smiles at the pat and praise. “I gotta take care of my family you know.”

Half pulls the planner from the packaging and burritos himself in it.

“It should be easy to rig up something to give it power,” Carlos told Tullk. “There’s a physical plug on it, and if you just make a rechargeable battery pack to plug into it then you should be good to go.”

Tullk nodded. “Sounds good,” he said, and Carlos nodded before carrying the rest of their groceries into the kitchen.

Peter plugs it in and flips it on half purring as it warms up and he burrows. “Waaaarrrmmmm…..”

Peter smiles.

Yondu chuckles following carlos and nuzzles him.

Carlos blinked when Yondu came up behind him. He looked back and smiled slightly. “Hey, big guy,” he said. He reached into a bag and pulled out a small bag of Cheetos. “Look at what I got.”

“Terran beastie worms.well shit.” Opens the bag and blinks. “uhhhh these are bad… there dead… I’d go get yer money back.”

Carlos chuckled. “No, they aren’t dead,” he said. “It’s made of mostly plant-based products, not grubs. Give them a try. I promise, they’re good.”
