What? No I’m- *he looked down, noticing his knee* oh I am. Eh, no big deal.

No, Max, we should clean that. God knows what was on this pan when it cut you. Lemme clean up this mess, then we’ll head to the medical tent or… wherever a first aid kit would be here.

Alright, Fine. *he put the pot onto one of the tables and sat down* there might be one somewhere in here or QM had it.

*quickly stacks the pots and puts them back – carefully so he doesn’t get cut* Where do you think it would be? *he stands and starts to look in the cupboards*

Probably in the cabinets or something, I dunno.

That’s what I’m thinking. Let’s see… lard, butter, spices… it concerns me that all the spices are completely full.

Huh, that makes sense, actually.

Ugh, the garlic salt is full? Really? That’s the easiest to use, my dad says! Okay… whatever… *keeps looking. Finally finds a first aid kit…. right next to some rat poison.* That’s concerning…. Let’s hope the bandaids aren’t loose.

*Max shrugs* huh, woulda thought we’ve gotten rid of that. There should be like, some sort of neosporin and band-aids. That’s about it.

*looks in the kit. The bandaids aren’t in a box, but they’re individually wrapped and not soaked through with anything. He found the generic antibiotic as well and an alcohol swab* Okay, we’re in business. Max? Can you roll up your pant leg for me?

Yeah, sure. *he rolls up the legy with the ripped knee, trying his best to avoid the cut* Be careful with that antibiotic stuff, the shit stings.

The alcohol swab is going to sting worse, Max. Sorry in advance. *he pulls on some scientific gloves from his pocket and then tears open the alcohol swab packet. He takes the swab and gently starts to dab at the scratch*

*He jerks his knee away at first, hissing a little* Shhii- sorry.

Try to hold still. Just for a little bit. When was the last time you had a tetanus shot? This isn’t a puncture, but… I dunno.

I dunno. Probably when I was 7. I don’t keep track of that stuff. *he moves his knee back down do Carlos can finish what he’s doing*

*Carlos tries to hurry with the alcohol, but makes sure that there doesn’t look to be anything foreign in the scrape. He opens a bandaid and puts a bit of antibiotic on the gauze pad before he puts it on Max’s scrape, smoothing it down in place* There… that should do it.

Thanks. Now can we go do science stuff now?

Yes, of course. *pulls off the gloves and throws away the trash. He takes the rat poison out of the cupboard and puts it up in a higher cupboard, where kids hopefully can’t reach it. He then grabs the pot and starts to head out*

Maybe we could get some pond scum in it too,

Sure. That’d be interesting to observe. What do you think would happen?

I dunno. Probably something with bubbles.

You think it’ll react and create gas, you mean? That’s a good theory! I think the soap may be able to dissolve the algae and scum some – at least a bit. It’s meant to attack stains after all, right?

Yeah. Stains and throat and stomach lining- that was dark. Sorry.

… No, no, I guess… don’t be. It just means you’re aware of how dangerous they are. That’s good… I guess.

Carlos’ heart lurched and he started to feel panic grip him.
“Wha – no, Hancock wait!” he exclaimed – maybe a bit too loudly. But Carlos
quickly stepped forward and grabbed Hancock’s sleeve, but not his arm as he
didn’t want to accidentally hurt the ghoul. But he held the shirt tightly, wanting
desperately for the other not to run away. “Han, wait, please! I’m sorry! I’m
sorry, I’m sorry – Please, don’t leave! I’m not telling you to go away! Please,
I’m sorry!” Fuck, fuck, fuck! He
messed up! He messed up badly!

This was how it ends – Hancock wasn’t going to trust him
anymore. He’d be too nice to say so, but things would change too quickly. They
wouldn’t try to open up to each other anymore, and they’d grow apart and Carlos
would have to leave so Hancock could go on with his life and then Carlos would be
alone, and then he’d get caught and ripped apart by super mutants and never be
heard from again, and Hancock would wonder about him but wouldn’t go out
looking for him, and… and… and–!

Peter
looks at Kraglin then between Carlos and Mikey then Yondu. “……….
sorry…….” pulls back visibly wilting a bit not wanting to be the source
of everyone’s anger.

Kraglin narrowed his eyes slightly, but sighed and dropped his arms finally. “Thanks, Pete. C’mon then… you said something about breakfast?”

Carlos smiled. “Dad’s making some. Follow me, boys – and be nice, okay?”

Mikey wheeled ahead of him back into the dining room, and Carlos led the way.

Carlos blushed a bit. “Oh, come on, I’m not really a genius… I just had an education.”

He suddenly froze. Shit, that sounded so… so pretentious and horrible!

“I – no, I don’t mean it like that!” Carlos quickly back-pedaled. “I meant – I meant I got an old-world education, and it specialized in mechanics for the wo- the job that my G.O.A.T. exam had placed me in s-so I have a head for this stuff. You… you have a head for resource management, leadership, and charisma. Just, uh… just different strengths is all.” Carlos tired to smile at him awkwardly, hoping that he hadn’t messed up too terribly.

Hancock may have been offended if Carlos hadn’t been so quick to correct himself, that is.

“This might surprise ya, but we do have schools in the Commonwealth–– well, Diamond City does, anyway, but I did drop out, so…. that first statement ain’t so wrong, even if it wasn’t what ya meant.” He shrugged. “I know folks in the vaults tended to get better educations than us out here, it’s not surprisin’ you’d know a hell of a lot more than any of us, you don’t have to try to make me feel smarter than I am, heh.”

“But you are smart!” Carlos insisted. “It’s no small mental feat to keep this place running! You know who’s who and where their strengths are and you know how to command respect and compliance from people, which is something I could never do. And… and I think you’re very good at reading people as well. Heh, I’m, like… pretty bad at that. I didn’t have the social development I probably should have had outside of interacting with the same forty or so people for over three decades, you know?”

“Uhhhhh….. no they don’t and…… Kraglin knows how to strip one for parts…. as for how to operate it….I don’t think so….”

Carlos frowned. “Maybe we oughtta pick them up rather than just wait for them to come to the house,” he suggested. “Dad has a car we can drive. My Driver’s license shouldn’t be expired. I think.”

Looks at him. “And… how am I supposed to hide? You want me to come out in daylight?” Looks at him nerviously.

“Uh– oh…” Carlos said softly. “I’m sorry, I forgot about that. Um… maybe Mikey and I can go. And you can stay here with Dad?”

“Yeah…. they should be next to my ship….and I’ll hang out with your old man. Who knows I might be able to help him out around here or something.”

Carlos smiled at him. “Like planning for lunch or dinner – you know better about what the boys can eat so it’d be a great help. Speaking of which… should we go get some breakfast?”

Yondu nods and looks at him with a sigh before tugging him into a light kiss before pulling back and heads down stairs to the dinning table. “Something smells delicious in here. Morning wheels. How are you?”

Mikey looked up from his plate, blinking a little sleepily. But he grinned and waved. “Hey, Eiffel 65! I’m not too bad!”

“Mikey, don’t make references Mr Yondu can’t understand,” Mr Ramon chided gently with a smile.

“He’ll understand them soon, I promise!” Mikey said with a grin. “Hey – sit down, you guys. Dad went all out this morning.”

“Of course I did! I’ve got four grown men to feed!” Mr Ramon laughed. “And a homecoming to celebrate as well! This’ll be the first breakfast since last Easter that we’ve all had with Carlos.”

Yondu smiles a bit about to sit then blinks at the door as someone knocks on it. His com beeps a few times and he answers. “Peter?”

“Heya! Hope we’re at the right house. I’m tired! Krags dragged me out of bed! And the hike… seriously!”

“Carlos was going to come pick you both up. You were supposed to call me before you got here.” Smirks at the silence then the loud whine of exhasperstion.

Mikey sighed and backed away from the table. “I’ll get the door… you guys hide in case it’s one of our neighbors.”

Carlos took Yondu’s arm and pulled him so that they weren’t in view of the front door. “Is Kraglin with you, Pete?” he asked through the comm.

“I ain’t lettin’ his ass outta sight on a planet like this,” Kraglin responded. “He still probably has a wanted status here…”

Mr Ramon frowned at that, but didn’t say anything.

Peter groans. “I came back once and a group of punk teens thought I looked weird so I taught them a lesson… so sue me…”

Yondu rolls his eyes and peeks to see who Mikey was opening the door for and sighs seeing it was just his two idiot boys.

Kraglin was mildly surprised at the sight of Mikey, but his expression quickly returned to stoicism. “This is… the Ramon house, yeah?” he asked.

Mikey blinked up at him. “Yeah, it is,” he said. “Can I help you?”

Kraglin huffed softly. “Carlos and Yondu – they’re here, right?”

“Oh! Yeah, come in!” Mikey backed away a bit for the two and offered his hand. “I’m Mikey – I’m Carlos’ brother.”

Peter shoved Kraglin over and out of the way. “Yo wheels! What’s shakin! Ohh I smell food! Krags get off the floor bro! They got food! Like good good food!!”

Kraglin growled at the boy, a practically murderous glare in his eyes. He pushed himself up and reached out, quickly pulling him into a headlock. “You little shit – where the hell‘s yer decency??” He snarled.

Mikey was so surprised that he started to wheel back. “Uh…”

Peter yells and struggles to get out of the head. “Krags!!! Bro! Ow!! Let gooooooooo!”

Yondu shakes his head. “Oi! Peter settle down Kraglin let him go. Honestly you to….peter that is Mikey… have some blasted decency….now behave or I’ll put you both on bathroom duty.”

MIkey quickly closed the front door, while Kraglin just huffed and let Peter go, not caring if he fell to the ground or not.

Carlos poked his head in, and then hurried over to the two. “I can’t believe you two walked here! That was at least ten miles!”

“We took some shortcuts,” Kraglin said to him. “One of those big fury bear critters yelled at Peter an’ scared him though – that was funny as hell!”

“A bear?” Carlos asked, worried.

“Looked like one. Though not as stocky, and it had a droopy face and a tail.”

“I told you it was a dog! Not a bear…… or maybe it was a badger… I dunno. But it was owenedcby someone.,had a red neck tie. Looked at like Kraglin. You could be related.” Laughs and hides behind carlos.

Kraglin glared at Peter, snarling lowly. Carlos got nervous with Kraglin’s anger, but he cleared his throat and looked at Peter. “Pete, take it easy. Don’t make a nuisance of yourself. Have you guys eaten yet?”

Peter shakes his head. “Grumpy needs something. He’s a bony bean pole. And all he does is growl at me……”

Yondu sighs. “Well maybe he wouldn’t if you would stop trying to be annoying.”

Peter looks at him then Kraglin and sighs. “……..yeah……..”

Kraglin just glared at Peter, folding his arms. Carlos and Mikey looked between him and Peter, wondering of the younger was going to apologize at all.

*he nods slightly* y-yeah, i guess.. *hic* .. Carlos i-i promise not to rob anymore stores…

*looks down at Max* You sure, buddy? YOu’re telling me the truth, right? *his voice is still soft, but it still demands honesty.*

y-yeah.. i’m sure… *he yawns and rubs his eyes* a promise is a promise…

I would love to see you keep it, Max. I think you should take some time to yourself now… you look tired.

i’m not tired.. i’m just… sad *he glances away, mumbling* i don’t want to be alone…

Why don’t you want to be alone, Max?

i don’t trust myself i just don’t…

Do you want me to sit in your tent with you? I do think a nap would do you some good. But if you’d rather not be alone, I can oblige you there as well. That is – if you’re okay with it. I know I’m not actually your dad, and I just realized how what I suggested sounds…

*he chuckles slightly and nods* thanks Carlos.. *he dries his eyes and gets up*

*Carlos stands up as well and brushes off his coat and legs. He then offers Max a hand to hold*

*he hesitates before taking Carlos’ hand and walking back to his tent, yawning ocasionally*

*Carlos is silent, not sure if Max wants to talk about anything else right then. They would go at Max’s pace.*

*he was quiet for awhile til they were almost at his tent, his voice still almost a whisper* do you remember the shadow people?

*he frowns. Yeah, he remembered.* Yeah, Max. Did… has something happened?

i think they decided they don’t like you anymore… *he stepped into his tent*

*Carlos was confused* They don’t like me… anymore? As in they had liked me before? Or did they just say they don’t like me?

they were mostly relaxed around you before but now.. *he sits on the edge of his bed and shrugs* they keep hissing at you

Do you know why? *closes the tent and goes to sit on the other cot across from Max.*

nope-* he pulls off his hoodie* it’s weird though, i’ve never seen them act like this..

Hissing, you mean?

yeah *he lays down*

Hm… um, okay then. Try to relax, Max. I’ll be here… *And he’ll figure out what to ground Max from*

*he puts his pillow over his face and mutters out* night i guess.. *there’s not alot in Maxs tent, a book bag and couple video games but not much else…*

Get some rest, Max. Do you have a water bottle? I can get it filled for you, in case you’re thirsty.

…. i don’t think i’ve had a drop of water since i came to camp, holy shyt-

What? Why? Nevermind… um, do you want some?
