Carlos hadn’t been to a circus in years – not since he was little. But there had been a raffle at work and Carlos had won a coupon for a free ticket. He kinda hoped that his brother and/or his dad were in town so he could invite them to go with him.

Carlos made his way to the ticket office that was set up, standing in the line with his coupon as he looked at everything around him. Some things were different than what he remembered or imagined a circus to be like, but not everything could be a dated cliche trope he supposed.

Once at the ticket office he smiled and offered the coupon. “Hey… this any good?” he asked in a joking manner.

At
the looks on their faces, he blushed and smiled like any good performer
would as he bowed to the audience. He took a free seat close to the
front, deciding not to look at the free food that wanted to be
hypnotized.

“I’m fine- I’m sorry.. I didn’t realize I had to be here at a certain time, have you already discussed what you want to happen?”

“Well, I was just telling everyone about you. And most all of us are excited for the experiment in hypnotism,” Carlos said with a grin. “Skip, do you have any plans tonight?”

“Plans? N-no, I don’t.” He lied, hoping he could text Earl to cancel soon or else it would be considered being stood up. Skip wasn’t that heartless. He tapped his foot, blushing at the idea that Carlos had told all about him.

“So- did you all have something in mind? Any limitations or boundaries you’re worried about?”

“Well, I’m sure the limits are different for everyone,” Carlos said, looking at the other scientists. “But I think when they volunteer they can tell you about it on an individual basis. But the main limit I have is that this is just for observing your hypnotism abilities, as well as for fun. So I just ask that you stick to that.” Carlos smiled at him. “I know this is short-notice and all, so I really do hope that tonight is alright with you.”

The

awkwardly standing by it to make his point that he was ready for bed..
or freedom to hunt.

“Anyway- I better.. head off.. it’s late and I’m sure there are some
young people out there, looking for a nice time..” He didn’t appreciate
going on, fearing to expose another secret.

Carlos went to see him out. “Alright,” he said. “Try to stay out of trouble. I hope you have fun. Be safe – at least, as safe as you can be in Night Vale.”

He left with a nod and headed out of the labs, tucking his hands into his pockets and casting his gaze out towards the sunset before smirking. It would be a fine night for another hunt, all he had to do was hope that it would work this time.

Carlos went back to looking over the samples he had from Skip. He was sure Skip was going to have an easier time getting blood than he had for science. Night Valiens didn’t trust science – but they might value the fact that another being would need blood to live.

So Skip was probably going to be okay. If not, he knew where he could get blood. Carlos would gladly provide him some from the fridge.

Carlos worked well into the night, as he habitually did. Only after what was supposed to be midnight did he go upstairs to his apartment for the night.

Though the morning was dreary and was greeted by the cowering of multiple citizens while others cut off their dog’s ear for good luck, Skip was helping himself to the morning ritual of coffee and a cigarette. He knew these things wouldn’t hurt him, at least not the cigarette. So it was that day that he had a dozen refills of both, Skip didn’t quite like the smell of the cigarette but he just thought the smoke looked neat.

It was after these things that he made Earl a priority, calling him back to apologize for how distant he had been and setting up another date to hopefully give the father another chance.

Though his hopes were low.

Then he took a shower and got dressed in some jeans and an old circus show shirt, popping open an umbrella and putting in star hoop earrings, he made off to the labs.

That morning Carlos had the scientists gathered and he discussed with them his study and experiments. Most were pretty excited when he proposed the hypnotism show and almost all of them agreed to participate or watch it, with only one scientist declining to attend though they encouraged everyone else to have fun.

Things were looking pretty good.

The vampire was chipper and on time as the sun rose just above the lowest trees, pushing open the doors of the lab and smiling with his fanged grin.

“Hello..? Jake?” He paused, “Carlos- I didn’t know what you wanted me to wear- so I didn’t over dress..” He mumbled as he stepped further inside, glancing into the back hallways for the scientists.

The scientists were still sat down in their meeting, and Carlos spotted Skip poking his head out. He smiled. “Oh, hey! Skip! Welcome, welcome – how are you?”

The other scientists turned to look at the newcomer, some with curiosity and some with a bit of excitement.

Carlos looked at Hancock in curiosity. He sort of wanted to hear that story. But to answer his question…

“Well, they’re usually programmed to detect errors and tell you about it,” Carlos told him. “But machines do what they’re told to do despite everything. It’s really only their physical capacity that might stop them, like shutting down when it gets overheated.”

He glanced over at him when he noticed the look, only offering a wink in response, more to watch Carlos’ confusion at trying to decipher that than as any actual explanation. “So….. if they can still run as long as the shit that needs to be there to make ‘em turn on and shit is there….. is that why so many’a those robots try to attack anythin’ that moves? I assume they weren’t programmed to do that in the first place, yeah?”

Carlos glanced at Hancock. “Uh, well I suppose it depends on the robot,” he said. “There’s the military robots, of course, that are filled with all sorts of prewar-time programming. They probably understand only that the states were under attack, and without anyone to declare peacetime they remain active.”

Carlos extracted another part from the terminal and looked over it. It would need new wires, but other than that it would be fine.

“Though I’ve also heard about public service robots that attack,” Carlos said. “Sometimes, in that case, the robot will have a program in place for self-preservation. Again, it’s just a case of nobody being able to turn it off.”

“Well,
you won’t have to think about that for a while yet,” Carlos told him,
turning his head up to look at him with a smile. “You’re one of the best
things that has every happened to me, and I’m not going to let you go
if I can help it.”

“We find a way to make you like this and I won’t ever have to think about it.” He joked, a small smile on his face. “You’re wonderful, y’know that? Just the most amazing man I’ve ever met. You’re perfect, sunshine.”

Wait,
was that a joke? Was Hancock joking? It sounded like it, but Carlos
honestly couldn’t tell. He sometimes thought about the fact that the
ghoul was technically immortal and he wondered – genuinely wondered –
what was going to happen to them in the long run.

But to Hancock’s face, Carlos didn’t like thinking about it because it was a problem he couldn’t fix.

“How’s
about a date tonight?” Carlos suddenly asked. “I was gonna ask about
it, but then we got to discussing over who’s perfect and beautiful.”
