Carlos hadn’t been to a circus in years – not since he was little. But there had been a raffle at work and Carlos had won a coupon for a free ticket. He kinda hoped that his brother and/or his dad were in town so he could invite them to go with him.

Carlos made his way to the ticket office that was set up, standing in the line with his coupon as he looked at everything around him. Some things were different than what he remembered or imagined a circus to be like, but not everything could be a dated cliche trope he supposed.

Once at the ticket office he smiled and offered the coupon. “Hey… this any good?” he asked in a joking manner.

@partyplanningforsuckers

There
was a very strong part about Skip that made him think how Carlos could
just be looking to humiliate him, but he didn’t have to be remembered by
these people anyway, he could snap away their memories if things went
sour. “Sure.. Yeah, so do you wanna test me first or just get started on
the public image..?”

“We can test it before, if you’d prefer, but I’m alright with having fun with the test,” Carlos said. “But it’s up to you.”

“I’d like to just warm up, if you don’t mind?” He hoped with a nervous smile, “Do you think your colleagues might be upset if I draw their blood?”

Carlos shrugged. “I can’t speak for them. And Jake’s the only one here. What, are you hungry?” He asked it as if he was asking to take him out for pizza again.

“I-I
already told you-“ He desperately stuttered out, nervous of someone
hearing them. “When I drink it gives my body a euphoric rush of..
certain emotions, and it also keeps me alive.. It’s like having to eat
vegetables and drink water. I gotta do it or there will be consequences
like extreme fatigue, and wild hunger..”

Carlos nodded again, typing into the ipad. “Okay then… cool. THis is all very interesting.”

But then Carlos realized that Skip seemed kind of off. “Hey… are you okay?” he asked.

His head swiveled up and he smiled shakily as he brushed his fingers over his other hand, “Yeah- sorry.. This stuff is just kind of… Well- to be blunt, it’s usually very sexual and that’s why I’m so nervous.” He paused, “I don’t really talk about this stuff..”

Carlos’ eyebrows shot up. “Oh… oh! Oh, really? Interesting… Uh, I guess. Well, it’s just natural. Uh, sex, I mean. Would you… rather not talk about it?”

“N-no! No.. it’s fine, it’s just a little embarrassing you know?” Skip chuckled worriedly, “Are you sure I can’t hypnotize someone for you today..? I’m very good, very careful!”

“Well, I need time to get the group and ask them if any of them would be willing,” Carlos said. “They might want to make it a spectacle and have fun with it. Would… you be okay with that?”

His posture stiffened a bit, but he allowed himself to relax at the idea of having fun with this stuff and getting people to watch. He was after all in show business, and loved an audience!

“Of course! Why not? I’d love to do something like that, a bit odd for a scientist to say but I’ll take it!”

“You sure?” Carlos asked. “Like, absolutely? I’m sure you don’t advertise your vampirism, so I understand if you have reservations about it.”

“A-as long as.. The citizens around here aren’t afraid of someone like me,” He explained in nervous bites of his lip, “I try to keep it secret as long as possible, but I should be traveling again soon so why not..?”

Carlos smiled at him. “You should know… Night Vale doesn’t find ‘monsters’ to be a threat,” he said. “Except Librarians, because those guys have statistics. But like… dragons? Or aliens? Or eldritch beings? Night Valiens consider them to be just people. If you’re going to get into trouble in this town, it won’t be because of vampirism, I promise.”

Though his nerves didn’t leave him, at least the feeling of being the only freak in town did. So he nodded and smiled hopefully, “O-okay- Okay, I’ll do it!”

Carlos grinned wider. “Alright. I’ll talk to the other scientists. Who says we can’t have fun while  doing science, right? Just as long as someone is writing… er, typing stuff down. That’s what I always say.”

“Do
you have a spot where you normally stargaze?” Peter asks looking over
at the other. “You know, Tony Stark and I are good friends… I’m sure
he’ll have something for you to look at the stars and the Space Station
with. Not to mention Mr. Stark is out of town and Pepper is with him. So
I mean I could take you there and it’s not too far from here… you could
be home in time to sleep and wake up and go to your interview?”

Peter shook his head “honestly I don’t know much about Venom
yet to tell you if he’s a threat around here or not. Aside from the bank
robbing and all I don’t really have anything on him. I’m just being
cautious.” He shrugs. “But, you might be right he might not come over
here and bother anyone.”

“I used to go an hour or two outside the city,” Carlos said. “There’s a field near some woods that I like to go to.” But Spidey’s offer both surprised and bothered Carlos. “Um… thanks for the offer, but… it’s probably not a good idea for me to be anywhere near Stark’s stuff.”

Not that Carlos didn’t want to – it would be a dream come true to be able to see some of Tony Stark’s gear and use some of it. But he had a very good reason for declining.

Peter was a bit surprised that he denied the offer, anyone would have jumped at the opportunity to check out Tony Stark’s home and play with whatever cool inventions they could lay their hands on. “Well, alright then… if you change your mind just let me know… Tony won’t mind and it’s not like he’d care anyway.” Peter nods. “So if you’re afraid of getting caught or something you don’t have to worry.”

He lifts up the mask to reveal his lips, offering a gentle smile to the other. “So, I’m guessing you’re a huge science nerd as well? You said you’ve got an interview tomorrow? That’s neat I hope you get the job.”

Carlos smiled slightly – nervously – and he shrugged a bit. “Yeah, well… he’d probably mind,” he said softly.

Carlos was surprised when Spidey lifted his mask just a bit and almost missed the question. “Uh – well, um, yeah. I do. Thanks a lot, Spidey.” Carlos shrugged again, looking down at the gravel on the roof. “It’s… not exactly the sort of thing I would like to work at, but… yeah, I need it. I need to pool some money so I can get out of here, you know?”
