My Fingers Slipped @partyplanningforsuckers The heat only seemed to be packed in at the circus, with the hundreds of citizens that had swarmed like ants and the intense rides that seemed to have a life of their own. The smell of sugary cotton candy and popcorn was enough to lure anyone who had just come from a days work, the circus was the place to be. With a circle of sand and tigers, along with swinging trapeze and double jointed dancers, the main stage was selling ticket for such a view.

Carlos hadn’t been to a circus in years – not since he was little. But there had been a raffle at work and Carlos had won a coupon for a free ticket. He kinda hoped that his brother and/or his dad were in town so he could invite them to go with him.

Carlos made his way to the ticket office that was set up, standing in the line with his coupon as he looked at everything around him. Some things were different than what he remembered or imagined a circus to be like, but not everything could be a dated cliche trope he supposed.

Once at the ticket office he smiled and offered the coupon. “Hey… this any good?” he asked in a joking manner.

@partyplanningforsuckers

The
acrobat was back at the labs without even being summoned, he didn’t
want to be alone at the moment with all of these thoughts of pursuing a
relationship with the father or not. He needed a distraction, and what
better to distract himself with but a handsome scientist.

“May I see Carlos? He’s a scientist here..” He prepped the reception, tapping his fingers along the sil.

Jake looked at Skip. “Oh, you’re the one from earlier today, aren’t you?” he asked. “Carlos has been working on your samples all day. He might have some information for you.” The scientist smiled at him. “Come on back with me. Just don’t touch anything – Carlos has the samples exposed at the moment.”

Yeah, he was totally gonna get his sticky little hands on everything! Just to spite them!

He kept his arms to himself in worry that he would knock something over, actually taking measures to stuffing his hands into his pockets and walking in line with Jake. His nerves weren’t the best at the moment, so practically being in a museum was rather nerve racking. “Really, all day just over me?”

How flattering.

“Over your samples, yeah,” Jake said with a grin. “He’s pretty excited about it, I think. There he is.. Hey, Carlos!”

Carlos looked up from his microscope and grinned widely when he spotted Skip. “Hey there! I did’nt expect to see you so soon.”

Well, it was flattering.

Skip gave a gentle smile over to Carlos, clasping his hands in front of him and swaying a bit. “Yeah, things were.. Weird, so I didn’t go home with him. I thought I’d take my mind off it! Find anything cool?”

Carlos opened his mouth to start explaining, but he stopped himself. He remembered the last night and Skip’s apparent disinterest in his work.

“Um, well… yeah, I did,” he said carefully. “But, uh… is there anything you want to talk about first?”

“You. Your imposter has my kid. I need you to get him back.”

“Don’t worry; I’m already planning on kicking that impostor’s ass after I rescue Max.” Dan reached into his pockets & took out his brass knuckles. “Do you know where they are right now?”

@the-perfect-scientist

“No idea – I thought you would. I understood that you have some beef with him… which is why he has Max.”

“If I had to guess, he either took Max to one of the abandoned buildings in the Van Nuys or he’s keeping him hostage in my apartment.”

“Either way, he’s made a big mistake. I swear to God, once I get my hands on him, I’m going to eviscerate that son of a bitch!”

“Not if I get my hands on him first. I warned him already not to mess with Max. Should we check your apartment first?”

image

“We probably should. That seems like the first place he’d go if he was trying to lure me to him I just hope he didn’t booby-trap the place. Let’s go; It’s high time this jerk gets what he deserves…”

“Lead the way, Dan.”

“What is with this guy anyway? Does he have a stealing-other-peoples-lives-and-children complex or something?”

“We need to go east, that’s the quickest way to Casa Paradiso.”

image

“I honestly don’t know what this guy’s problem is. He just showed up one day, broke into my apartment, stole my clothes, and started walking around town posing as me.”

image

“The worst part is, he keeps manipulating people into thinking he’s a good person. Hell, he even manipulated my friend Chris by making him a pie. Chris doesn’t want me to get rid of that impostor because he’s one of his go-to sources for sweets. I think Chris forgot about the part where the bastard drugged & kidnapped me.”

“That is so messed up… I can’t believe Max got mixed up with him. Do you think… he’s trying to manipulate Max?”

@dedneilsearchhistory

*He hesitated, but nodded* Yes…

A man is going to die tonight.

Where is Dan* now…?

I dont know… but he also broke my arm…

Jesus Christ… Neil, have you gotten help for your arm?

*He shook his head* I’ve kind of just.. tried to ignore it…

Oh… Neil, no, that’s the worst thing to do! Hang on –  I can help. I don’t have access to an Xray, but I know how to set a bone back in place.

Will… will it hurt?

I’m afraid it will, Neil. But it’s better than hurting forever because it healed improperly. I’ve got some ibuprofen to give you afterwards to help you deal with the pain too. Trust me, Neil – I’m a scientist.

…Alright, it’s better than just ignoring it… *He sighed* I just wanted that guy to leave Max alone…

I know you did, Neil. I’ll go get Max, after I fix your arm, okay? Lemme quickly splint it for now – if you don’t do anything, I can plaster it after I get Max. Sound good?

Mhm.. yeah… *At this point, Neil didn’t really seem to care about his arm* I hope he gets arrested for the shit he’s done….

At least. *Carlos pulls gets some medical tape out of his bag and gets a couple sticks.* I’m going to have you wait in my tent where it’s safe while I go find Max, okay? Come here… lemme see that arm, buddy.

Okay.. *He stepped closer, glancing away as he let Carlos inspect his arm*

*Carlos looked at the break* I’m going to touch your hand. Tell me if you feel anything. *Carlos takes Neil’s hand and gently squeezes his fingers*

Skip
tilted his head a bit, “Uh, yeah.. Like a long time ago, but he’s a
chef now.. Has been.” Shaking it off he shrugged and let himself smile
again, “But yeah.. Three o’clock, date time!” He cheered with finger
guns, chuckling.

Carlos smiled at him. “Nice. I hope you guys have fun.”

He finally produced the cotton swab and started to unwrap it. “Okay. So this will pick up loose cells in your cheek and I can have a look at it under the microscope. Maybe we’ll see something interesting there.”

So the acrobat plucked up the swab and dropped his jaw, swiping at the center of his cheek quickly and pulling it away, glancing at it awkwardly. “So that’s it?”

Carlos nodded. “Yeah, for now. I’ll call you when I make headway.” He looked at Skip. “We never exchanged phone numbers, did we? I think we should.” For business.

The dancer nodded at that, giving out his number onto a slip of pale paper, not seeming to mind just handing out his personal information even to a scientist, “You can just text me, I think I’ll know it’s you..” He went to get up before asking, “I-I didn’t waste your time did I? I’m sorry..”

Carlos smiled as he took the paper. He shook his head. “No, you didn’t. You didn’t know you didn’t have any blood, did you? We just both learned something today. Hopefully we can learn more. This honestly was part of why I set up these trials – to study individuals in Night Vale in addition to helping them where I can.”

“And that’s pretty darn nice of you,” offered Skip, minutes before departing to leave to his lunch date which he was expecting to go better than it did.

Skip had planned on quickly having this man swoon for him and bend to his will, seeing as most men like Earl would have. Though once more, Skip grossly miscalculated and was greeted with a tired looking man who had too much on his plate and who couldn’t stop talking about his son. Maybe it was simply Skip’s growing fear of being dead before having children, or having children in general, but it made the acrobat endure the challenges and extreme obstacles of parenthood. It also turned out that Earl was not looking for a temporary relationship.

Things were not going as planned.

Carlos was learning a lot just from the one sample from Skip. And with every thing he learned, he got even more questions. To him however, this was the opposite of a problem. More questions meant more science needed to be done, and he was certainly a fan of more science.

He was so excited for this – he couldn’t wait to talk to Skip again and tell him some of his findings.
