Carlos some guy named ‘Dan*’ is threatening to kidnap DedMax

Isn’t… Dan the one who picked him up to bring him back to camp?

Guys, I’m getting mixed signals here…

No, not Dan. Dan*! There’s someone trying to steal Dan’s identity. And since Max and Dan are friends, that asshole wants to get rid of Max. But I am not going to let that happen.

Oh, Dan* with an asterisk!

Wait, where are they? How can I help??

My Fingers Slipped @partyplanningforsuckers The heat only seemed to be packed in at the circus, with the hundreds of citizens that had swarmed like ants and the intense rides that seemed to have a life of their own. The smell of sugary cotton candy and popcorn was enough to lure anyone who had just come from a days work, the circus was the place to be. With a circle of sand and tigers, along with swinging trapeze and double jointed dancers, the main stage was selling ticket for such a view.

Carlos hadn’t been to a circus in years – not since he was little. But there had been a raffle at work and Carlos had won a coupon for a free ticket. He kinda hoped that his brother and/or his dad were in town so he could invite them to go with him.

Carlos made his way to the ticket office that was set up, standing in the line with his coupon as he looked at everything around him. Some things were different than what he remembered or imagined a circus to be like, but not everything could be a dated cliche trope he supposed.

Once at the ticket office he smiled and offered the coupon. “Hey… this any good?” he asked in a joking manner.

@partyplanningforsuckers

Though
it was during this job that he began getting hurried alerts from his
phone that nearly seemed to be blowing up from the messages, as the
screen lit up each time over it would be something from the lab. As the
texts got clearer they stated something about an eager volunteer to have
blood and bone marrow extracted for cancer combatants, being that this
was a citizen of Night Vale it was worth a shot.

Right?

Practice wrapped up and Carlos went to work getting ready to take samples from any volunteer that showed up. He didn’t really think anyone would show up though – Night Valiens were pretty attached to their blood, to put it mildly. But there was no harm in asking so Carlos was ready, just in case.

There was one volunteer. It was the last person you would think would want to donate anything from their body.

Skip.

He stood in the main lobby awkwardly with his hands behind his back, and his clothes baggy and makeup looking like someone had smeared glitter over his eyes. Basically, a randomly thrown together version of himself. His dark hair was brushed neatly, and his eyes were bright with interest as he wandered around the lobby.

Jake the Scientist let Carlos know that there was someone there for them. Carlos was honestly surprised, but pleasantly so. He put on a smile and went to see their volunteer.

However, seeing who it was stopped him at the door. He was so confused.

“Skip… right?” he asked as he finally started to approach.

The acrobat painted on a smile cheerfully and nodded in an eager manner, “Yep!” He beamed warmly as he straightened his posture up from his slouched position in expection at the lobby. “I’ve never been in a place like this, but I wasn’t really expecting it to be like this.. “

“Uh… well, labs come in all different shapes – every one of them equally scientific,” Carlos replied, offering a slight smile. “Um… I’m honestly a little surprised to see you here,” he admitted.

“Well,” He began as his dark eyes swept away from the walls and instead towards the scientist, a soft smile spreading like butter onto his pinkish lips, “I’ve always felt really pretty bad for people who have these horrible diseases, but since I’m not super smart and educated, I figured I’d use my body! Like I do with everything!” He cheered as he perked up and clasped his hands in front of himself.

Like he did… with everything? Carlos tried not to scrunch his nose at the implications of that.

“That’s
very… altruistic of you,” he said. “Um… well, let me show you where
we’ll be performing the procedure. It’s just in the main lab over here
– I’ve got a little station set up and ready.”

Of course Skip followed close behind, dragging his feet in a tired and seemingly injured manner as if the arches of his feet ached. It wouldn’t have been a surprise, but that would reveal for Skip’s poor self care.

His walk was brisk and eager, watching the walls as they moved down with a faint smirk. “What exactly is this again? Like a uh.. Body sampler, for you guys?”

Carlos glanced at him. “Well, we’d like to get a bunch of different sort of samples from you. But only what you’re comfortable with giving – I know some things might just be too far for your comfort. I’m hoping to be able to unlock cures within someone’s own genetic code. It might take a long time, but you know… science.”

Carlos? I have a question for you.

“Yeah, babe?”

“It’s about Max.”

“Er, Max? How – how do you know Max?”

“We’ve been messaging. When were you planning on introducing us?”

“Uh… honestly, I’m not sure. I hadn’t thought about it.”

“Were you thinking of.. maybe adopting him?”

“… Uh, why… why would you ask that?” Carlos started to get just a bit nervous.

“I mean.. I wouldn’t be opposed. He seems like a good kid. And he may or may not view you as a dad.” Cecil said, looking at his love.

“I mean… I … am I even really good ‘Dad’ material? I’m just being a good friend and trying to set an example for him… It’s the least I can do, right…?”

“I think you are a wonderful dad Carlos. You care for him. You want the best for him. Which makes you wonderful.”

“I thought that was being his friend… Cecil, what’ll happen if he comes to me for… ‘the talk’??”

“I don’t know… Maybe I could ask Earl? He is a dad now… but i think he sees you as a dad already”

“But being an actual dad… that’s a big step and it… I just don’t know if I’m up for it. There’s so much more than what I already am to Max and just… I might fail him.”

Carlos huffed softly in amusement. Hancock was like a cat – just wanting all of Carlos’ warmth, it seemed. “It’s okay… because we’re together now, right? That’s all that matters.”

Carlos was saying this like they might be together forever. Relationships sometimes ended, he realized, but right now he didn’t see this one ending. He was pretty damn happy.

“That’s right, nothin’ else matters.” He purred, peppering a few kisses along Carlos’ neck. He was getting tired sitting there like that just soaking up the other man’s warmth and affection and he hugged him tighter, letting out a sleepy, contented sigh against his neck. “Never thought I could be so happy, y’know? You make life worth livin’, sunshine. Dunno how I ever got by without ya.”

Carlos grinned at him. “You say the sweetest things,” he cooed. He pressed a kiss to the top of Hancock’s head and held him. “You sound tired… do you wanna lay down and have a nap?” What was unsaid was that Carlos intended to join him – Hancock seemed perfectly happy with him there after all.

Carlos? I have a question for you.

“Well, it’s not like when someone gets a broken leg,” Carlos started to explain. “A machine doesn’t usually have the capacity to think ‘hey, I’m broken, I should probably not be running’. If you turn it on, it will try to work. If the connections aren’t there, then there will be an error message, but it will still try to execute commands.”

“Heh, can’t say I’ve never run on a broken leg, actually.” He shrugged, a small smile on his face as he sat back to lean against the couch and watch more comfortably. “So these things know something’s up but don’t quit despite that? I had no idea.”

Carlos looked at Hancock in curiosity. He sort of wanted to hear that story. But to answer his question…

“Well, they’re usually programmed to detect errors and tell you about it,” Carlos told him. “But machines do what they’re told to do despite everything. It’s really only their physical capacity that might stop them, like shutting down when it gets overheated.”
