What the – oh… *looks at Max* Hi Max.

hey Carlos.. *he muttered, figuring the other already knew*

I know what the anon said, but do you want to tell me yourself what’s going on?

.. i don’t know.. *he put his hands in his pockets, looking at the ground*

Max, I’m not angry. Disappointed, but not angry. I want to help you do better. Where are you getting it?

i’m not gonna throw him under the bus like that.. *he sighs softly*

Max, this isn’t about throwing someone under the bus. THis is about your health and safety. I need you to tell me.

my health and safety are fine Carlos, i don’t get why you care so much about something like me..

Max, drinking is not healthy. Especially at your age. I know I don’t need to point that out to you, but I want you to see how what you’re saying doesn’t make any sense. Do you still have any alcohol?

.. no, i don’t have any more… *he glanced away, half mumbling again*

You’re absolutely sure, Max? I’m not accusing you of lying – I just want you to be sure.

yeah, i drank everything i had when i got it…

Okay then. Max, I want you to know that it’s not a bad thing to ask me for help when you feel yourself slipping.

*he quietly glanced away*

Do you understand, Max?

As the summer days rolled by, a full moon crept closer and closer. Thankfully, the woods surrounding the camp were large and caves were scatted everywhere, maybe Carlos could wait this out in a cave? all he had to do was find one and hope some other animal didn’t make its home there, right? -(the worse starter maker) L

Carlos wandered through the forest. He knew he’d seen a cave somewhere – it looked like an old bear cave, though he hadn’t gone in it before. He wanted to be as far away from his camp and the summer camps, in case the children had an idea to wander around at night to hunt for snipes. The full moon would make visibility perfect for it, so it was a reasonable concern in Carlos’ mind.

He finally came across the cave he was looking for. And not too soon either – the moon would rise probably within the next ten minutes. Carlos ventured forth, holding his flashlight up to search the inside of the cave. Hopefully it was empty. Could a werewolf beat a bear? Maybe?

“Oh, Okay Then, I Guess..” he glanced away, unsure what to say

Carlos felt a little bad about it – he didn’t want to be seem pushy, but there were some things he just didn’t want to see. Then, of course, there were the children in the camps surrounding the area. THe police really didn’t need to be called.

“Hey… you hungry? We can head back to my tent and get something to eat. I’ve got some food.”

he smiled, wings twitching slightly “Sure! I haven’t since last night..” he got up, almost forgetting about the coat

Carlos got up after him, grabbing the coat. He hastily tied it around Drake’s waist into sort of a poor tunic-type thing. “I can offer you some shorts and a shirt too. It’ll be a bit more comfortable and… socially acceptable than this.”

“Clothes Are Annoying..” he muttered, glancing away as Carlos tied the coat around his waist

Carlos nodded. “They can be,” he admitted. Some shorts would be easier to wear than this though, I promise.”

he tilts his head “What Are Shorts?”

“It’s a thing that goes over your bottom. And it’ll stay up on its own.” Carlos stuck his feet into his shoes and knelt down to lace them up.

Why the hell – Max? Max, where are you buddy? I need to know how you’re feeling.

@dedmaxsearchhistory

… how much do toothbrushes even cost? i’ve never had to buy one before..

Well, it depends on the kind that you get. But generally they’re pretty cheap. Especially kid’s ones.

*he nods slightly* alright, that’s good i guess

Well, I want you to get a good one too. I’ll help you pick it out, Max, and I’ll even help pay for it if you need me to.

*he smiled softly* thanks Carlos

You’re welcome, kiddo. *Carlos smiled at him. They approach the car.* Here we go… *he unlocks it and opens the back passenger door for Max*

*he said a quick thanks as he climbed into the seat, buckling himself in* how old do you have to be get a drivers license?

Well, you can start driving when your fifteen with a permit and an adult in the car. It’s to help train so you can get a license when you’re sixteen.

16? *he groans* but i can drive now! why do i have to wait 4 years?

Uh… you most certainly cannot drive now. Because the law said so.

just because the law says so, doesn’t mean i suddenly don’t know how to drive

No, Max, I mean you can’t drive as in you’re not allowed to. I’m not questioning your ability… though I really should, considering your height.

i could probably ace whatever test they have to get my license *he leaned back in his seat*

There’s still an age requirement, Max. But, you’re old enough to drive a lawn-mower doing yard work.

lowmowers aren’t cool.. *he leaned against the window*

They are – you’re literally decapitating vegetation as you run it over. Though, there’s also ATVs I suppose… but those require adult supervision for them.

☝️ – Tap my muse on the shoulder

Newt had been walking down the street, case in hand when he suddenly felt a tap on his shoulder. He paused, not sure who was there, but he turned to see–

“Carlos?” He asked in disbelief. It had been ages since he’d last seen the man. What were the chances of seeing him again?

Newt
chuckled quietly, and nodded. “I figured you would like it.” He said
quietly. “Do you not have chips in America?” He asked curiously.

Carlos shook his head. “No. But my dad will sometimes dice potatoes and cook them in a pan with a little oil. He likes to add a little garlic along with the salt. They’re not as crispy as these are though. These are delightful – and dry enough to eat with your hands.”

“Carlos?” He asked in disbelief. It had been ages since he’d last seen the man. What were the chances of seeing him again?

Newt contently began to eat, enjoying his first taste of home in a long while. After a short while, he offered Carlos one of the chips. “Would you like to try one?” He asked.

Carlos looked up curiously. “Oh!” he said before he swallowed the food in his mouth. “Um, you sure?”

“Of course! You’ve never had them before, right? It’ll be a day of firsts.” He said with a smile.

Carlos smiled at him and reached to take it. “Thanks,” he said, and he put the chip in his mouth.

As Carlos chewed he hummed appreciatively. The potato was crispy, but like Newt said it was soft on the inside. And the salt just gave it a nice touch. Carlos hummed again, smiling at Newt.

“I think I’ll be getting this next time I eat,” he said truthfully. Not because it was better than the other dish, but because he wanted to give it a proper try with the fish for a meal.

“Much
more the former than the latter.” Newt replied. “Both he and his
fiancée are involved with the ministry, so they tend to stay there.”

“Ah, I see,” Edwardo said. “I suppose devotion to one’s work runs in your family, doesn’t it?” He smiled kindly at Newt.

Newt smiled softly, and nodded a little. “It’s true.” He replied. “That seems to be the Scamander lifestyle.”

“It’s in the Carlos lifestyle too,” Mikey chimed. “You should see that guy when he’s working on a new invention – you can’t get him out of his room for anything short of a fire!”

Edwardo chuckled. “Sometimes, he’s the one who causes the fires…” he added softly.

Newt chuckled quietly, and smiled at Carlos as his family spoke. “It’s good to be dedicated to your work.” He said to him.

“Exactly,” Carlos said with a nod. But he was grinning. “If anything is worth doing, you ought to do it well.”

Carlos sighed happily through his nose as he held Hancock close. He kissed him and kept kissing him, slow and careful. Carlos was just enjoying the texture of Hancock’s mouth and the soft, slick noises they made as their mouths moved together. He was struck momentarily by how happy he was that they were with each other. So many things could have kept them from getting together, but there they were. And Carlos was very, very glad.

The ghoul practically purred at all the attention, clinging to Carlos tightly as they kissed. He was tempted to try to push things further, but without knowing how the other would react, and remembering what happened the last time he tried, he held himself back. For now he was content with just being with Carlos in whatever way the other man was comfortable with.

Carlos eventually did break the kiss, though he wasn’t quite ready to be away from Hancock. He hugged Hancock and nuzzled into his cheek.

“I’m so lucky to be here,” he murmured softly. “I’m not sure what I did to deserve a second chance, especially with someone I care about… but here I am. I’m… I’m so happy to be here, Hancock. I love you…”
