Carlos hadn’t been to a circus in years – not since he was little. But there had been a raffle at work and Carlos had won a coupon for a free ticket. He kinda hoped that his brother and/or his dad were in town so he could invite them to go with him.

Carlos made his way to the ticket office that was set up, standing in the line with his coupon as he looked at everything around him. Some things were different than what he remembered or imagined a circus to be like, but not everything could be a dated cliche trope he supposed.

Once at the ticket office he smiled and offered the coupon. “Hey… this any good?” he asked in a joking manner.

@partyplanningforsuckers

He
glanced over to the striped tent, laughing a bit and turning back to
Carlos with a shrug as his shoulders dropped he scratched at his neck
and rolled it.

“She had a date, she’s not my partner by the way.. We’re just
siblings.” He explained before going on with, “Yeah that guy wasn’t
invited over here, I was just getting a drink when he came over.. Thanks
again,” Chuckling and dropping his hand, “You know you’re pretty limber
for some random guy in the audience..”

Carlos chuckled softly. “Well, uh, I’m sure I’m going to be feeling it in the morning,” he confessed. “I work out in the field a lot, but I’m still not as active as I probably should be, heh.” He cleared his throat. “I-I was just referring to… well, when I said ‘partner’ I just meant your acrobatic routine partner. I didn’t know if you guys were… I didn’t want to assume.”

“Don’t worry about it,” He quickly shrugged it off with his eyes glancing over the park and sighing deeply from his chest, almost as if it was his last time viewing the place. His deepest eyes glinted like glitter in the ride’s lights, with his heavy makeup sparkling beautifully along his cheeks as he took another breath before playfully punching Carlos in the arm.

“Hey!” He exclaimed with a point of his finger, “You don’t know my name yet, it’s Skip.” He finally said with a smile.

Carlos smiled at him. He offered his hand to shake. “I’m Carlos,” he said. “Carlos Ramon. I’m a scientist. I should thank you for giving me a circus experience that I will never forget.”

Skip quickly grabbed his hand and shook it gently, exactly how anyone would have expected someone like Skip to shake a hand. “Scientist, huh? What’s someone so smart like you doing in a place where the runaways live, anyways? Just here for the stunts?” He laughed warmly, letting go of Carlos’s hand and dropping it to his side.

“I’m glad I could thrill you Carlos, it was my pleasure to drag you from your seat just to hear you shriek.” His laugh rattled up through his throat again, “Really though, were you interested in the show or did you just come to see idiots get hurt?”

Carlos chuckled. “No, nothing like that. I won a coupon in a raffle at work. So I came in for that. Honestly, I was scientifically interested in the equipment you use. And your use of the laws of physics to your advantage was pretty awesome to watch. I wish I brought my notebook so I could calculate some of the stuff you pulled.“

The acrobat blushed then, he raised a hand to his chest to feel his heartbeat accelerate and his blood rush into his cheeks. His eyes were wide for a moment before he simply chuckled, playing with a heart shaped locket nervously.

“You did?” He pressed, “I’m flattered, really.. Someone like you really caring about what I do, that was very validating. Would you like my number?”

“Well, what you do obviously takes a lot of work,” Carlos said. “You must be in peak physical condition, especially to drag my fat butt up and throw me around like a rag doll.” He chuckled. But then he was confused. “Well, I dunno about phone numbers. Do you have a Facebook? We can start out with that instead.”

It was in Carlos’ mind that Facebook was a safer alternative to just giving out his phone number right away. It wasn’t anything personal against Skip, he was just practicing basic safety.

The
show was soon to end after that entire finale, the artists that simply
tossed themselves to the will of the air were officially worn out and
distressed as they landed onto their boards and bowed to the crowd. They
almost immediately dropped their chipper stance as soon as they were
behind the great red curtains, removing jewelry and peeling off clothes.

Soon enough, seats were being emptied by the dismissive words of the
ring master and the ending tunes from the speakers and trumpet players,
urging Carlos to leave.

Even though he hadn’t expected to suddenly find himself part of the show, Carlos enjoyed himself. He had a smile on his face as he filed down from the stands with the rest of the crowd. He had worried a bit that a circus visiting Night Vale would be a little… weird, but aside from the unexpected audience participation, it was all within what one would have seen from a circus.

Maybe someone took some videos and put it on Youtube. Carlos would try to find one and show it to his dad and brother when he got the chance.

As soon as Carlos was out of the tent, he saw the trapeze artists associating with someone covered in tattoos with antlers and a fanged jaw, they both looked deeply entertained by the Night Valian with chuckles and giggles filling the air. They were clearly being hit on, but they weren’t amused and were simply trying to get the guy to fuck off.

You could directly notice the look of nervousness from the man who had invited Carlos into the act as one of unknowning, he had no clue at what to do and had to stand there and endure the man’s comments. He couldn’t seem to stop nodding and smiling, but without a single response out of his nervousness. He needed someone.

Anyone.

Carlos played with the bottom part of the rose stem as he walked out, still smiling. However his attention was drawn to the small group that was making so me very strange noises. Like giggling… but it was awkward and it sounded forced. And one of the acrobats (which took a little bit for Carlos to recognize, honestly) did not seem to be having it underneath the smile and the closed-off body language. Time to break some tension, Carlos thought to himself.

He plastered on a big smile and walked up to the group. “That was a fantastic show, you guys!” Carlos exclaimed. He walked between the acrobats and threw his arms over the shoulders of the young man and woman. “Better than the last! What did I tell ya – audience participation is all the rage these days!”

He was implying heavily that he was part of the show the whole time. Hopefully, the two would catch on to the feigned familiarity and play along, making the antlered being uncomfortable (or at least put out) enough to back off.

He was throughly distressed, he winced at the pitch in Carlos’s voice and eagerly avoided the scene, making himself scarce to another group of people. Meanwhile the woman of the two simply muttered something to the male, and slipped off into a smaller tent.

Awkwardly leaving Carlos with her brother, he smiled warmly at Carlos and gently leaned into the embrace of his arm. He was certainly a flirt too, at least it looked that way.

“Audience participants are always welcomed, but sometimes they need a little push.” He smiled, tugging on his hand. “Thanks.. By the way.”

Carlos’ smile shrank and became a little nervous, his facade dropping almost instantly. “Are you okay?  Were… you actually being bothered by that guy? I didn’t make a mistake, did I?”

Everything seemed okay though, Carlos thought. He let his arm slide down from the younger man’s shoulders. That girl though… Carlos wondered if she as okay too. “Your, uh… partner. Where did she go off to?”

However
he was forced to sit through and endure around an extra thirty minutes
of the act before he was finally called back into action, now the artist
was alone and his sister was performing at the stage while he simply
played at his works. It was nearing a late night before the man suddenly
swept himself over to the balcony, his hand extended for Carlos below
him.

The man was clearly young, if not younger than Carlos by at least two
years and looked to be somehow still going strong throughout the show.
His eyes were pale and cold amongst the dark lashes that laced his eyes,
his hair was a platinum blonde which contrasted beautifully against his
darker skin and gothic makeup. His hand was covered in chalk from the
performance, but it still was asking for Carlos.

Carlos was, again, confused when the acrobat decided to include him again. His hand was reaching up, though he wasn’t really sure what for. A high-five maybe? Heh… or a high-flying-high-five. So Carlos’ hand was up, his palm open as he watched the other’s face draw closer. Carlos wondered if he did his own make-up. He looked good.

Though instead of a simple playful gesture, as the man advanced on Carlos he grabbed his hand pulled him from his seat and into his arms in the sky, of course he was trained and in complete control but they were two stories up and in constant motion.

What happened was simple enough, Carlos was just a prop in the show, he was thrown into the air and caught like some kind of princess as the acrobat entertained people more so with fancy movements and stretches that almost defied physics. Soon Carlos was back in the mans arms, and was being taken to even higher ground where the act began. Finally, to catch his breath and rest.

Carlos couldn’t stop the scream that ripped from his throat as he was yoinked out of his seat. However, through all the tumbling and the flying his danger meter remained silent in his labcoat pocket. Carlos only realized this after a few tumbles and he did finally devolve into hysterical laughing.

When he made it back to his seat Carlos was still giggling a bit, but he started to feel self-conscious about the noise the audience heard from him. He wondered if that was a bit weird, but he tried to forget it and just sat back in his seat, hopefully to watch the rest of the show without incident. It was exciting, yes… but he already had enough to be comfortable with.

Haha! I don’t know whether to be excited, or concerned! But it makes my heart beat fast… and I kinda want this to last. 🙂

“I need you by my side”

“Babe…” Carlos smiled, gazing lovingly at Cecil.

Cecil smiled back at him, in absolute adoration. “I love you”

“I love you too,” Carlos cooed and he leaned in to smooch Cecil on the mouth.

Cecil kissed him back. “I am so glad you are a part of my life,” Cecil responds.

“You know what? So am I,” Carlos returned, taking Cecil’s hand and squeezing it.
