Carlos wasn’t sure where his cough came from. It didn’t feel like allergies, but it was deep in his chest. In his lungs. Carlos wasn’t sure what was going on.

Until he started to cough up red and a flower petal while sitting at the table with Cecil. He knew what it was, but he was still confused. He looked to Cecil, not understanding and a more than a little scared.

Cecil had been chatting away with his long time friend Earl when he heard Carlos. He stopped his discussion about the next week’s bowling meet up to see Carlos staring at something in his hands.

“Carlos? Are you alright?” He asks, passing over a drink to his lovely scientist friend. It truthfully had not sounded all that awful but it was his reaction that worried him.

“I’m… fine,” Carlos murmured. He took a napkin and wiped his hand off under the table quickly before accepting the drink. He took a big, healthy mouthful and swallowed, but it didn’t ease the itch in his chest.

Carlos busied himself with wrapping the petal up in the napkin so he could keep it hidden until he got the chance to throw it away.

On second thought, this would probably happen again. He should get some more napkins.

So Carlos stood up quickly and gave a slight smile. “Um, gimme a second – I’m getting some napkins.

Cecil nods but he is still worried, all three eyes looking at him as he hurried off. “Ok but be careful and don’t be long. We are talking about the next game Carlos!”

He was still worried about him but he saw that the other wouldn’t talk to him about whatever it was that was bothering him. Perhaps it was a new allergy or something had happened in the science lab that Carlos didn’t want to worry him about. None the less he could have sworn Carlos coughed something up, turning to his Scouting buddy for assistance.

Carlos gathered a lot of napkins. He put some in his pocket for later and tossed away the soiled one he had. He was thinking that maybe he should head home. It might help to have some distance from…

No, no… it couldn’t be that. He must’ve just picked it up somewhere. It could be contagious, right? Could it? Just a little bit of time to himself and he’ll be feeling better, he was sure of it. He just needed to figure out how he was going to extract himself…

Cecil found himself anxious for his friend’s return, leaning softly against Earl as he waited for Carlos. A familiar comforting lull to the air around the two as they waited. Cecil looked down at the watch he had been given, trying to track the time Carlos had been missing. If He wasn’t back soon, Cecil decided he would go and check up on him. Bowling could wait, Carlos’s health could not.

Cecil found himself watching his tattoos wander his skin, wondering if he should try to see what Carlos was up to, but not wanting to invade his privacy.

Carlos decided on saying he had a migraine. He didn’t usually get them, but he could make it work.

He came back to the table and smiled at the other two men. “Hey… um, so… I’m starting to get a headache. I… I’m having trouble keeping my eyes open so, uh… I’m thinking of heading home before it gets worse, so…” He paused and spent a moment stifling a cough with a straight face. He tried to cover it up by clearing his throat and reaching up to rub at his temple, feigning pain. He kinda felt rotten, lying like this. But he had to get out of there and rest and hopefully get over this thing without anyone knowing.

“Daniel?” Cecil asked, a bit curious about who he was. “Maybe we can stop by the camp on our way back!”

“Maybe… um, I haven’t heard very good things about Daniel, honestly,” Carlos admitted. “But yeah, we can stop by. They have a science and a Space camp there, so I think the kids could benefit from a visit!”

“Maybe we should stay clear of him then. That sounds interesting! I’m sure the science campers would love to hear from you!” Cecil says, excited.

“Heh, I’m sure they would,” Carlos said with a smile. “We can meet the other counselors too. They seem nice enough.

“But first, a new cot. I know you just got here, babe, but are you alright with us leaving the camp now to go shopping? I think I’ll have to get some actual food too, since I’m not going to be by myself – ramen isn’t going to cut it with you, I’m assuming.”

“It’s fine by me, I got here a bit before you did.” Cecil said with a smile, looking at Carlos. “Besides we don’t want the stores to close before we have the chance to get the cot, and that doesn’t sound like a healthy meal my sweet Carlos.” Cecil already started making a checklist in his head of some things that they would be able to stock the makeshift camp with. Perhaps if they could borrow the other vamps kitchen it would be easier.

Carlos smiled at him. “Alright then, hun. We taking my car, or yours? I think mine does pretty well in the forest path.” Carlos shrugged sheepishly. “I’ve honestly been reverting to my college habits regarding self-care. I usually just eat quick-preparation foods that don’t have much chance of being ruined with my… cooking ability.”

“Maybe your car. Mine didn’t overly enjoy getting here.” Cecil said, holding the other’s hand. “While we are in town we can get you an actual meal and I’ll see what stuff we can get so I can make us some food as well.”

Carlos nodded. “Great. Sounds good. Lemme find my keys.” He leaned in and smooched Cecil on the cheek before turning to look through his personal items bag.

Cecil couldn’t help the grin that crept onto his face, followed shortly by the lavender blush. As he waited, he found his fingers drumming a somewhat familiar pattern onto his leg.

“It’s nice to be together again,” Cecil mused.

“Hm?” Carlos asked. “Oh – yes! Yes it is! I’m very happy you’re here – I love to work with you, so I’m glad you could get away, at least for a bit!”

He drew his keys from his bag and spun them around one finger with a wide grin.

“Yeah?” Carlos asked. “Yeah, uh… this, what we’re doing, is really out of the norm for me.” He chuckled again. “I… I”m not sure how you convinced me to do this with you. Usually, my work is ‘fun’ enough for me.”

“Just that Irish charm, I s’pose.” He snorted, giving Carlos a wink and a grin. “I got a way of gettin’ people to go outta their comfort zone a little to experience more’a life.”

“Irish charm?” Carlos asked with a smile. “Or maybe another sort of charm? How’s your wand-work with illegal spells? I’m kidding, I’m kidding. Heh.”

“This?
I’ve had it since Earl and I were scouts. I was surprised I still fit
it and since you were near a camp I thought it would fit the theme!”
Cecil smiled. It still had his patches from back in the day sewn on,
some sewn on better as he clearly progressed his skills.

‘Fit’ in Cecil’s opinion was probably different from Carlos’. He was pretty sure young men weren’t supposed to flash their midsections when they stretched. But it looked good on Cecil – tight, but… good.

Carlos smiled at him. “Yes, it certainly fills the theme,” he responded. “Too bad I don’t have anything – I never was in scouts. Not enough robots for me, heh.”

Cecil was still smiling at Carlos, catching where he had stared at his midriff. He hoped he had enjoyed it. Sure, it was a bit short and tight but it wasn’t as bad a fit as he thought it would be. Enough to leave things to the imagination, although Carlos did not have to imagine.

“You look perfect the way you are. Quite scientific! And handsome,” Cecil replies.

Carlos chuckled. “Oh stop… you’re too much,” he cooed and he leaned in to press another kiss to Cecil’s face.

“I missed you Carlos!” Cecil said, swooning, before pressing a kiss to Carlos’s cheek. He could spend all night just enjoying eachother.

Carlos grinned and pulled Cecil into a hug. “I missed you too, babe.” But then a thought occurred to him. “Did you bring any camping supplies?”

Cecil was enjoying the hug when the question got asked. “I brought some. Mostly what we already had at home.” He hadn’t been sure what to bring as he didn’t know where Carlos was staying.

“Oh good. Does that include another cot? Because you see how big mine is, and… it’s not very.” Carlos had been expecting to be there by himself. He was glad that Cecil was there, but arrangements needed to be made now.

“I have a sleeping bag,” Cecil answers, looking back at Carlos’s cot he could attest to it not being that big. There goes plans for cuddling anytime soon, but that could be worked on dependant on how long they planned on staying here. After all, Carlos wouldn’t stay in just a temporary lab forever.

Carlos hummed. “Well, we can pop over to the town and buy one of those double cots. We should probably already have one anyway.” He smiled at Cecil widely.

Cecil grins back at Carlos. “That sounds wonderful! We will finally be able to sleep together again!” He said it excitedly.

“Great!” Carlos said. “Hey, let’s grab dinner while we’re out. I think it’d be fun!”

“Sounds fun to me! You can show me around town as well!” Cecil smiled widely at him, excited.

“Absolutely!” Carlos agreed. “The town is about as big Night Vale – maybe smaller – so it’s a very interesting visit.”

“Oh? Well we can have fun exploring it and meeting your friends then. Perhaps we might run into them when we get the cot?” Cecil smiled.

Carlos nodded. “Maybe. Though the campers usually just stay in the camp itself. It’s only Daniel who goes down to town, I think.”
