Cecil
didn’t remember exactly how he got here, as was often the case when
traveling outside of Night Vale. Although he did remember passing a camp
on his way to Carlos.

“Probably,” he said with a smile, “but tell me what you found out!”

“Well, Sleepy Peak Peak is an extinct volcano,” Carlos started to explain. “I had heard that before coming here – and it’s name implies as much as compared to its old name, Wide Awake Peak Peak – but I’ve now confirmed it.”

He sat there and listened to Carlos, enthralled by what he had to say even if he didn’t quite understand the difference. Did he mean that the fire being within the volcano was dead and therefore the ‘mountain’ was safe? Cecil nodded along as he listened to the explanation.

“But there’s still so much to learn about the volcano – I’ve collected more samples than I can even count! There is still so much to learn, and it’ll be so rewarding!”

“So you are planning on staying here longer?” Cecil asked. He looked around the makeshift lab. “Have you met anyone while you were here?” He was interested in the volcano sure, but he was interested in what Carlos was up to other than that as well.

“Well, I did want to talk to you about that,” Carlos said. “Staying here, I mean. Because I want to, but I wanted to ask you if you’d be okay with it.” He then smiled. “There’s a camp nearby… with children. I met some of them, but usually I just leave them to their activities.”

Welcome to Camp Camp

Cecil was waiting in Carlos’ new lab after finally getting Station Management to agree to a vacation. He was excited to surprise his Significant Outsider, having not told him that he was going to visit him or that he got time off. Sitting on an empty table in his old Scouts uniform, Cecil watched the door impatiently.

Carlos had been out collecting soil samples from around the volcano. He wanted to know how long science could tell him that the volcano had been innactive.

Eventually Carlos did come back to his temporary lab – a tent with a lot of mobile equipment set up inside along with a cot. Carlos walked inside, but then stopped when he saw who was there.

“Ceec? What are you doing here?”

Cecil grew excited when he heard Carlos coming up to the tent, waving at Carlos, hopping down from the table.

“Carlos! You’re finally back!” He said with a wide grin. “I finally got Station Managment to agree to a vacation and I missed you. So I thought I would visit you.”

Carlos blinked, surprised. “Uh… r-really? That’s…” His face broke out into a grin. “That’s great! I had wondered if you would try to come because I said I’d be studying an extinct volcano…” He put down his samples in his cot and came up to hug Cecil.

Cecil quickly hugged Carlos back, enjoying the comfort of his embrace again. “That sounds really…neat! Tell me about it,” he said, smiling at him as he fixed his messed up uniform. He glanced around the cot.

Carlos smiled at him. “Of course! Oh, first of all… I have some news to break to you. So, the volcano, Sleepy Peak Peak… do you know what volcanoes are, sweet?”

Cecil makes a bit of a face as he tries to remember what Carlos said about Volcanos last time. “The fire ‘mountains’?” He asked for clarification, but still listening intently.

Carlos nodded. “Yes. I just want you to know… you’re okay with being close to a mountain, right? I know you still question their existence, so…”

“Its.. weird. But I’ll will be fine plus I have you!” Cecil said with a small smile. “So what did you find out about Sleepy Peak?” He asked.

“Sleepy Peak Peak,” Carlos corrected. “Sleepy Peak is the town you saw coming in. Probably…. unless you jumped through a temporal rift? Because that’s happened before too.”

“Don’t tell me I mixed up salt with sugar.” (probably in coffee or something)

“Okay,” Tony gasped hoarsely in between hard coughs.  “I’ll just…suffer in silence.”  He let out another long series of coughs, but the corners of his mouth were turned up in a smirk, and he was looking at Carlos with a merry gleam in his eyes.

Carlos snorted softly and reached to take the offending cup of coffee away. “You want me to make you a new one?” he asked.

“That depends,” Tony grinned without coughing this time, “are you going to run a sample of it through the chem analyzer before you give it to me?” He was laughing silently, kind of enjoying Carlos’s unintentional knack of breaking him out of a rut.

Carlos smiled sheepishly, glancing away. “Uh… would you like me to?” he asked. It was a joke, obviously, but Carlos was playing along. Maybe he’ll do it just to make sure Stark knew that it hadn’t been on purpose… Carlos didn’t know what the hell happened. He suspected his own cup was also compromised.

Tony flashed a fond grin at Carlos and chuckled.  “Either you’re stumped on something, have one of your not-fully-formed ‘Eurika’ ideas, or someone has become your latest distraction.  Which one is it?” He asked teasingly.

“Huh?” Carlos asked. “Oh, no, I was just wondering if I have to make myself a new cup too. Probably… heh. I like my sugar.” What did Stark mean by ‘someone’?

“I’ll, uh… take this and be back in a bit,” he then told his boss, lifting the cup in illustration.

Tony glided out of his seat and to the other side of Carlos.  "Aaaah-d-d-d-d-nah-nah-nah
-nah

,“ he halted in front of Carlos with glittering eyes and a boyish grin.  "Didn’t anybody tell you it’s very bad manners to completely dodge an employers question when he’s trying to show interest in your work and or personal life.” He put up his hands to emphasis a ‘pause’ in the currently one-sided conversation.  "Granted, I have no business asking about your personal life, although, should you happen to want to share details about any good fortune you may have had, I’d be more than happy to join celebrating your reason for happiness.  Even if it’s work happiness, I more than understand that, so don’t feel the need to keep it to yourself, that is, if you don’t want to.“

Carlos had only barely stopped before running into Stark when he stood in front of him. Carlos was honestly a little confused – his personal life? Why would anyone want to know about that?

“Heh, I have a personal life?” Carlos asked facetiously, matching Stark’s grin. He wanted to know about happiness in Carlos’ life? “As for good fortune… you know, I accidentally gave my boss a cup of coffee with salt in it instead of sugar today. But the kicker is he didn’t fire me! Talk about great luck, huh? Carlos was still grinning to show that he was joking.

Because that’s what he did – he joked. Carlos didn’t know where Stark’s concern was, if he had any, so he wasn’t sure if he should take the other man’s comments in sincerity. He’d see how his boss reacted to the joke first.

Carlos Appreciation Week – Headcanon Day

So, one of my old, I’ve-been-kicking-this-around-since-August-2013 ideas is that Carlos is one of the most popular guest speakers with the local Girl Scout troops. I feel like this headcanon (why did we ever stop saying “fanon” anyway?) is fairly well-supported, now that we know that Carlos is actually Professor The Scientist, and that the Girl Scouts of Night Vale are slightly less eldritch & a bit more hands-on that their Boy Scout counterparts.

I imagine that most of Carlos’ lessons start out perfectly normal (“Today, we’re going to learn about rocketry!”) but quickly get sidetracked (“Well, heh, we’d need quite a bit more thrust than the standard kit provides to break the atmosphere.”) into something that involves a… few more explosions than originally planned (“Wow! That was a MUCH larger detonation than our hypothesis predicted! Let’s see if we can duplicate that result!”)

Obviously, the troop adores him.

Awe…. That made Carlos’ heart melt a little.

“You’re too good to me,” Carlos said softly, still clinging onto Hancock’s hand. He rubbed his thumbs over the other’s knuckles and the back of his hand.

“That ain’t possible, darlin’.” With a smile, the ghoul leaned in and pressed a soft kiss to his lips then gave his hand a little squeeze as he pulled back again to look into Carlos’ eyes. “I’d give up anythin’ to keep ya around, sweetheart, you mean the whole world to me and I wouldn’t wanna do anything to screw things up between us.”

Carlos smiled at him. “I’m pretty sure you won’t,” he said. “I… I think I’ve got a pretty good idea of what I’ve walked into.” Admittedly, Carlos didn’t expect any of this. But things just… seemed to fall in place. He wasn’t going to question it too much – not when he and Hancock have such a good thing going.
