Cecil
didn’t remember exactly how he got here, as was often the case when
traveling outside of Night Vale. Although he did remember passing a camp
on his way to Carlos.

“Probably,” he said with a smile, “but tell me what you found out!”

“Well, Sleepy Peak Peak is an extinct volcano,” Carlos started to explain. “I had heard that before coming here – and it’s name implies as much as compared to its old name, Wide Awake Peak Peak – but I’ve now confirmed it.”

Welcome to Camp Camp

Cecil was waiting in Carlos’ new lab after finally getting Station Management to agree to a vacation. He was excited to surprise his Significant Outsider, having not told him that he was going to visit him or that he got time off. Sitting on an empty table in his old Scouts uniform, Cecil watched the door impatiently.

Carlos had been out collecting soil samples from around the volcano. He wanted to know how long science could tell him that the volcano had been innactive.

Eventually Carlos did come back to his temporary lab – a tent with a lot of mobile equipment set up inside along with a cot. Carlos walked inside, but then stopped when he saw who was there.

“Ceec? What are you doing here?”

Cecil grew excited when he heard Carlos coming up to the tent, waving at Carlos, hopping down from the table.

“Carlos! You’re finally back!” He said with a wide grin. “I finally got Station Managment to agree to a vacation and I missed you. So I thought I would visit you.”

Carlos blinked, surprised. “Uh… r-really? That’s…” His face broke out into a grin. “That’s great! I had wondered if you would try to come because I said I’d be studying an extinct volcano…” He put down his samples in his cot and came up to hug Cecil.

Cecil quickly hugged Carlos back, enjoying the comfort of his embrace again. “That sounds really…neat! Tell me about it,” he said, smiling at him as he fixed his messed up uniform. He glanced around the cot.

Carlos smiled at him. “Of course! Oh, first of all… I have some news to break to you. So, the volcano, Sleepy Peak Peak… do you know what volcanoes are, sweet?”

Cecil makes a bit of a face as he tries to remember what Carlos said about Volcanos last time. “The fire ‘mountains’?” He asked for clarification, but still listening intently.

Carlos nodded. “Yes. I just want you to know… you’re okay with being close to a mountain, right? I know you still question their existence, so…”

“Its.. weird. But I’ll will be fine plus I have you!” Cecil said with a small smile. “So what did you find out about Sleepy Peak?” He asked.

“Sleepy Peak Peak,” Carlos corrected. “Sleepy Peak is the town you saw coming in. Probably…. unless you jumped through a temporal rift? Because that’s happened before too.”

Carlos had thought for a while that he needed to get another voice transplant when he started coughing up red.

But it was when he was getting his coffee that he spat out something. Cecil was there with him when Carlos realized that it was a flower petal.

Carlos’ heart clenched. He looked at Cecil and… Cecil had seen it too. Carlos only barely felt his stomach drop before he went into another coughing fit and spat more petals into his coffee mug.

How? How could Cecil… what happened? What happened to them?

Carlos hummed. “I dunno… must’ve slept wrong,” he murmured. He took a deep breath and felt some more bones crack. “Ugh… that’ll stick with me for a while.” Carlos held his hand out for Cecil’s. “C’mon… we got work to do.”

Cecil accepted Carlos’s hand with a sympathetic smile, a bit worried, as ever, for his husband. He nodded, and reached to rub the scientist’s back with his free hand.

        “Are you sure, honey?”

“A scientist is always sure,” Carlos said with a smile. “Even when he’s not. I’ll be fine, Ceec… a hot shower at the end of the day will make it all better. Or at least trick me into thinking it’s better.”

“Fair enough,” Cecil said kindly, accepting the answer as best he could. He nodded and returned the smile; hesitantly, but genuine all the same. “I’ll get started on the day, then. Make calls, pry on things. Do you want me to make you coffee? Breakfast?”

It was strange thinking that he himself would neither need nor even want these things. He felt a little bit detached from himself thinking on this, and tried to shake off the thought.

“If you have time,” Carlos said. “I don’t think I’ll be long, though, taking care of business.” A thought then occurred to him, which made Carlos frown. “Is… do you think the sun’s out? I haven’t looked out side yet…” Of course not. THey’d been together the entire morning so far.

Carlos nodded in agreement. “Yeah… it doesn’t seem real for me, either. It’s been… roughly twelve hours already. But you’re still here… that’s all that matters.” Carlos took his hand and lifted it to his mouth, giving him gentle, loving kisses.

Cecil vibrated softly at the affection, yet at the same time he was trying to wrap his mind around the first part of what Carlos had just told him.

Twelve hours already. Twelve hours, he had been afflicted with this strange, horrific curse. Yet what was twelve hours compared to a lifetime, an eternity? Cecil shuddered. It wouldn’t come to that. Rather, he hoped it wouldn’t come to that. Optimistically, this would be cured. Again, he had to remind himself of his husband’s brilliance, of the effectiveness of science. Just because Night Vale had never had to face vampirism before did not mean that it could not overcome it, that, more to the point, he and Carlos could not overcome it.

And he was still here, yes. And so was Carlos. And they were together. And this was surely enough.

Cecil gazed up at Carlos, still gently vibrating. “Yeah, I’m still here. I promise.”

Carlos smiled at him. He leaned in and pressed a gentle kiss to Cecil’s mouth, still gripping his hand.

“We need to get up and ready for the day,” Carlos said softlly. “We should call the mayor… see if anything’s developed while we were sleeping.”

Cecil met the kiss softly, humming appreciatively in his throat. He was ever grateful for Carlos’s love and reassurance, and how much warmer the scientist’s touch felt when his own skin was so cold! He felt as if this was itself sufficient to bring him back from the dead unlife.

“Right… Right, good idea,” he murmured in reply. “It’s gonna be a big day, huh? There’s another disaster for the great Carlos the scientist to save the town from.” He chucked thinly, faith and apprehension mingled in equal measure in the quiet sound.

Carlos laughed softly, a little bashful. “I don’t really save anyone from anything… I just give them information.” He kissed Cecil again on the cheek. “I need to go shower and shave,” he murmured with a sigh.

“Oh, you do more than that,” Cecil told him, his voice brimming with all the pride he felt in Carlos. Why, during their very first date, Carlos had saved Night Vale from a malevolent shadow energy that turned people into vaguely torso-and-limb shaped black spaces in the fabric of reality. It was a memory that Cecil cherished.

“OK, sweetheart,” he said sweetly, his voice still a bit quiet. “While you do that, I’ll go ahead and check on the situation at large.”

Carlos smiled at him gently. He then yawned suddenly, reaching up to cover his mouth. “Ugh… sorry. Time to get up and get busy…” He turned to stand up from the bed and started to stretch his arms high above his head. His back gave an uncomfortable crack and Carlos groaned.

“Are you OK?” Cecil asked sympathetically as he gradually pulled himself up off the bed. His concern for his husband was written in his features (somewhat ironic considering his own troubles), and as soon as he was on his feet, the newly vampiric radio host was by Carlos’s side again, fretful as ever.

Carlos hummed. “I dunno… must’ve slept wrong,” he murmured. He took a deep breath and felt some more bones crack. “Ugh… that’ll stick with me for a while.” Carlos held his hand out for Cecil’s. “C’mon… we got work to do.”
