Cecil groaned a second time, this one longer than the first, and his eyes slowly fluttered open. He winced under the tight grip, and found it difficult to move his cold, lifeless limbs.

At first, he found it impossible to speak, and it terrified him. Unable to move, unable to communicate, he felt as if he were trapped in a nightmare, experiencing an episode of sleep paralysis while his poor husband panicked over him. It took another long, terrible moment before he realized that he needed to breathe manually in order to say anything.

“Babe? What’s wrong?” he squeaked, as he worked on the issues of better speech and any sort of movement. Still, for the moment, it was enough to just be able to respond to his Carlos.

Carlos gasped, relief slamming into him like a truck. He let out a long sigh, dropping back down onto the bed next to Cecil and wrapping his arms around the other tightly. Still cold…. ugh. Carlos quickly started working his hands on Cecil’s skin, trying ineffectively to warm him up.

“You- you- Thank God, Cecil… You weren’t moving – You weren’t breathing! I – shit, I thought some thing had – I-I thought you weren’t going to wake up!” Carlos was babbling, but was still trying to explain. He was just so happy that he’d been wrong though!

Cecil drew in a deep breath, again manually, just to take in the scent of Carlos, so much stronger now than it had ever been before. Was this because of what had happened? (Well, he was a predator now, was he not?)

He was beginning to regain sensation in his body, and his fingers curled upward towards the arms around him, every nerve and cell in his body reacting to Carlos. The scientist’s warmth and scent, the reality of him was a healing force, the vibration from his heart reverberating from his chest into Cecil’s back, speaking to Cecil’s own still heart as if it were beating for the both of them.

Cecil inhaled again. “Baby, I’m so sorry, I… I never meant for this to happen,” he whispered. “Moving is really hard― oh, God, I’m so sorry I scared you. I’m here, I promise, I’m still here with you.”

Carlos blinked at him, surprised. “What? No, no, Ceec, don’t apologize. It’s not your fault! I’m just happy you’re okay, Cecil – you’re still here with me and that’s all that matters! I’m so sorry I got scared – I know a scientist isn’t supposed to get scared because we need to think rationally, but for a second I forgot that I was a scientist and I just…”

Carlos was forced to cut himself off by taking a sharp and sudden inhale. In that split moment his train of thought switched tracks.

“Oh my goodness, you must be suffering from rigor mortis.” Carlos started to rub Cecil’s arms faster. “Let’s – uh, we’ll just warm you up. It’ll be easier to move when your blood can flow again.” But then Carlos realized something. “Blood – blood! You must be hungry!” Carlos looked over his shoulder at his end table and saw the small pile of bloodstones he’d gathered the night before.

Carlos left the room to find their reserv bloodstones and a bottle of water for them to share… if Cecil felt up to it at all. He came back soon and placed the net bag of bloodstones on Cecil’s end-table. He then took the water to his own side before stripping down to his boxers.

Carlos crawled into the bed and lay beside Cecil. He watched the other to see if he was still awake at all.

Cecil groaned and muttered sleepily as Carlos crawled into bed with him. He reached out, seeking his husband blindly (it was hard to tell if he was asleep yet, or only pretending to help himself get there), hoping to snuggle and hold him, and to find comfort and solace in him.

Carlos smiled slightly. Of course Cecil wanted cuddles. He obliged him and took one hand in his before sliding in to wrap it around his own waste. He put one hand on Cecil’s hip and then just used his other to help pillow his head.

The day finally started to catch up to Carlos and he got sleepy. He sighed and shut his eyes, waiting to fall into sleep’s embrace.

Everything would be better tomorrow. It almost always got better tomorrow.

Contented with the cuddles, Cecil slept. He slept far deeper than was normal for him, his body completely cold and still and lifeless.

Normally, he rose with the sun, but today, he just stayed like this, not moving, not breathing. He missed the sunrise, and the birds he would have frightened off with his coffee hammer. He was undisturbed by his husband waking.

He was absolutely and in every way as a man dead.

Carlos, himself, slept more than he usually did as well. He
was very tired, and his body wasn’t at 100%. It needed additional resources to
replenish his missing blood supply, and to save those he had slept longer.

When he finally started to stir, when the sun was shining
through the blinds in the window, he had the sense that something was wrong. He
felt alone. Very alone. Which he shouldn’t have been, as he fell asleep with
Cecil – he almost always fell asleep with Cecil. His arms were still wrapped
around the other man’s body.

He opened his eyes to confirm that Cecil was still there.
However, his mind started to catch up with him and Carlos realized he was cold.
Very cold. Like standing water. And he couldn’t hear anything; no breathing, no
bodily functions – nothing.

Carlos started to panic and he pushed himself up quickly,
looking down at the man beside him. “Cecil? Cecil, are you—“ He stopped, not
wanting to say it. “Ceec, can… can you hear me?” he asked instead, hand
gripping the other’s shoulder and giving it a shake.

The monster – what if its bite was actually venomous? What
if the vampirism was actually just symptoms leading up to a death? What if –
what if – what if Cecil was actually… actually…

Cecil did not give a response. His body only went limply along with the shaking, He did not stir, did not resist the shaking. He was sickeningly, painfully, heartbreakingly still

The stillness lingered in the bedroom as well, thick in the air, lonely over poor Carlos as he fearfully, frantically tried to rouse his husband. The possibility, horrific beyond name, that Cecil was truly no longer there drained the warmth from the room and left it as cold as the white-haired radio host.

Time itself was still now; it seemed to go on for an eternity. The eternity that Cecil wouldn’t be there.

Then, at the end of this endless wait, there was a soft, breathy, blessed
                                                                                                                g r o a n.

Carlos was growing more and more frantic as he tried to
somehow rouse Cecil back from wherever his soul had gone. He was actually startled
very badly by the groaning noise.

However, it didn’t actually give him any relief – Carlos worried
that the noise had been made by air being expelled from Cecil’s lungs while his
body had been shaken by Carlos’ anxious and frightened hands.

“Ceec!” he exclaimed desperately. “Ceec, Ceec, Ceec, can you
hear me? Honey, please, wake up for me!” His hand remained on Cecil’s shoulder,
the grip desperate and tight.

“I’m thinking about giving that whole bee music THING  a chance again. I kinda brushed it off as a FAD at first and never really gave it a—-,” A yawn pulled itself from his lips in the middle of his sentence, arms stretching above his head, “—A PROPER listen, y’know?” The blonde babbled away, watching as Carlos checked his various beakers and tubes and INSTRUMENTS all of witch beeped and wizzed at seemingly random increments of time. It was simply INCREDIBLE that Calos apparently knew what each sound meant.

Carlos hummed as Cecil gabbed on. Some of his hums were in
responses to Cecil’s mostly rhetorical questions and comments, but some were for
his science. So he said ‘Hmm’ a lot more than he usually would have, and as
always he wrote down numbers and symbols that were not numbers in his
composition notebook with an instrument that was clearly labeled with bright
orange tape and black ink stating that it was ‘NOT A PEN’.

“Bee music?” Carlos then asked suddenly, not looking at
Cecil. “Like… Flight of the Bumblebee?”

“Aii!!!
¡¡Hijo de puta!!” Carlos screeched and immediately started to rub at his eyes with his hands.

      Hopefully,
the SSP wasn’t paying too close attention to them this evening, since
Cecil paid it no mind at all (at least they woudn’t say anything either
way). He shut the door with a tendril (more out of habit than anything)
and led Carlos along to the bed, grinning like a kid on his first date.

Carlos was completely at Cecil’s control. He
couldn’t even sit down on the bed until Cecil got him close enough. Carlos
gently gripped one of the tentacles and gave it a playful tug, asking the other
to follow him silently. He smiled up at Cecil as he did so, matching the other’s
grin.

Cecil followed wordlessly, immediately, walking with him to the bed, sitting down alongside him. He hummed softly and kissed Carlos’s neck, carefree and warm, his tendrils playing lightly across Carlos’s body.

Carlos snuggled right into him and pressed
kisses into Cecil’s shoulder. Snuggling up all warm and clean and just
surrounded everywhere by loving arms.
Not that Carlos was asking for it, but if he were to die in this moment… this
was exactly where he wanted to be.
