“Anything is fine by me, but we should get you some proper meals Carlos.” Cecil responded.

Carlos just shrugged slightly. “Well, I usually just eat enough to function. But I know you’re not used to that… Like I said, it’s a habit I developed from college.”

“That doesn’t make it very healthy,” he said. Perhaps he had been spending too much time with his Niece or Old Woman Josie, in Carlos’s absence but he felt the need to make sure he was keeping a good diet.

Carlos chuckled. “No, probably not,” he admitted. “I guess you can start thinking about what else we could make. Wheat’s legal here, so our options are wider than usual.”

Cecil tried to come up with some food ideas that would be fairly simple to make. He adds chickpeas, some assorted vegetables, and a few.other things.

The drive to the store was longer than it would have been back home, but Carlos didn’t mind in the slightest. He was pretty happy to have Cecil with him.

Once at the store Carlos parked without incident – very different from Night Vale. It was kind of refreshing, if he were honest.

Cecil held Carlos’s hand as they walked into the store so they could get their snacks and a few meal things that would not be hard to repair and didn’t need to be refrigerated .

Carlos picked out the hot dogs and buns as well as a few condiments that he liked. Dill relish was one of his favorites.

“You know, the best part about hot dogs is that we can just stick them and then roast them over a fire. Not much cooking skill required other than ‘put the fire out’.”

Carlos wasn’t sure where his cough came from. It didn’t feel like allergies, but it was deep in his chest. In his lungs. Carlos wasn’t sure what was going on.

Until he started to cough up red and a flower petal while sitting at the table with Cecil. He knew what it was, but he was still confused. He looked to Cecil, not understanding and a more than a little scared.

“Yes
he was, but we called it off early because he got sick. He was coughing
rather badly.. I wanted to check in to make sure he was ok. When he
wakes up could you give him this?” Cecil hands Jake the pastry. He was
still wondering about how Carlos was doing.

“Could you message me if he gets any worse or if he needs anything? I can leave my number with you-”

The younger man nodded. “Yeah, sure,” he said. He took the pastry and pulled out his phone. “What’s your number? I’ll send you a text so you can add me to your contacts too.” He unlocked the phone and opened up his messages.

Cecil told him his number, adding Jake to his contacts as well.

“I better get going to work, but don’t hesitate to text me if Carlos needs anything. If I can’t go I can send an intern!”

Jake nodded. “Sure thing, Cecil! I’ll go check on him. Have a good day at work! Or at least a safe day!”

Cecil nods, before waving and going back to his car. He did have to go into work just a bit earlier to introduce himself to the newest intern and feed Khoshekh.

Jake went up to the apartment above the lab and roused Carlos with a knock at the door. Carlos was… less than pleased about the gift from Cecil. He managed to stifle his coughing until Jake left and Carlos let loose, hurrying over to the sink when he feared that he was going to be ill. Luckily, it was only a handful of petals and a lot of pigment, but Carlos was still miserable.

Cecil was not helping with this treatment Carlos had decided on. But he couldn’t blame the guy – Carlos hadn’t told him anything. And he wasn’t going to tell him for as long as he could.

Cecil was worried about Carlos but had to plan for tonight’s show. He wondered if Carlos would listen to his show tonight and if he would even be up to it. He spoke with the interns a bit before going into the washroom to feed Khoshekh and some of the kittens.

Cecil tapped nervously on his desk as he drank his coffee. He hadn’t heard back from Carlos yet this morning, and he had started hearing some startling news of a new strain of Hanaki going around. He wasn’t entirely sure what it entailed but he would likely have to report on it tonight. He debated asking Carlos his scientific opinion.

Carlos decided to shoot Cecil a quick text. Just a ‘thank you’, because he knew that the other man was just trying to be a good friend.

‘Thanks for breakfast. -Carlos’

When
Cecil got home he put some food in his dog’s bowl before going to his
room to get changed into his pajamas. Taking a look at his phone he sent
a quick text to Carlos.

‘Goodnight Carlos, Goodnight. I hope you get better soon! If you need anything I’m just a text away -Cecil’

He sat down by his bed and pulled out the notes app on his phone to plan tomorrow’s show.

Carlos didn’t go to bed for a long while. It wasn’t until midnight (or what was closest to the concept of ‘midnight’ in Night Vale) that he saw there was a notification for his phone.

Just seeing who it was from seemed to send him into a coughing fit, leaving a sizable bright red blotch on the sleeve of his labcoat.

When he was done coughing, Carlos took a moment to catch his breath and he changed into a fresh labcoat. He felt pretty miserable. He didn’t know what to do. But he managed to text Cecil back, at least returning the niceties he’d given:

‘Thanks. Goodnight, Cecil -Carlos’

Cecil didn’t recieve the text until later the next day when he was getting ready to head towards the shower to get ready for the day. He sent off another text, unaware of the damage he was unintentionally causing Carlos.

‘Good morning •;3 -Cecil’

Soon enough he was heading out the door, making sure to grab the cat food he bought for Khoshekh. He drove by a coffee shop and went in. Cecil thought it might be a nice idea to drop by Carlos’s lab with some coffee. No doubt he wouldn’t have gotten much sleep the night before.

Carlos had gone to bed an hour after Cecil’s text and he was still asleep well into the morning. He wasn’t feeling well and having stayed up he just needed to sleep longer. He hadn’t heard his phone go off – he hadn’t even heard the alarms he’d had on.

As Cecil heard no response, he only ordered one coffee, choosing to get a pastry that might last better for Carlos. If He was awake, he could always give up his coffee. When Cecil got his order, he drove by Carlos’s lab and knocked on the door.

The door to the lab was answered by Jake – a young man with short red hair. He looked at Cecil and grinned. “Hey! Mr Palmer, right? How can I help you?”

Cecil smiled at the young man, holding the coffee and pastry in his hands.

“You can call me Cecil,” he said with a small smile, before continuing, “I was wondering if Carlos was awake?” He asked, raising the goodies he had for the scientist.

“Oh!” Jake said. “Well, he might still be asleep. He had a late night last night.” Jake then frowned in contemplation and looked off at a point past Cecil’s head. “I dunno why… we weren’t working on anything particularly interesting. Otherwise he would have forgotten about the bowling trip you guys had. He was with you yesterday afternoon, right?”

“I’ll
try not to disturb any of your science, but I have a feeling we have
some chemistry of our own dear Carlos,” Cecil said, trying to hide his
smile that came with the cheesy pun.

Cecil waited for Carlos to lead him to his car, taking the chance to look around some more.

Carlos simpered at Cecil. “You think you’re adorable, don’t you?” he asked, grinning at him. He took Cecil’s hand. “C’mon. We’re losing daylight. The sun actually sets on time out here – can you believe that?”

Cecil happily took Carlos’ hand as he was led to his car. “So time works ‘normally’ here?” Cecil asks. He still wore the One True Timepiece that Carlos had given him years ago on his wrist. He didn’t even reply to the rhetoric question about whether or not he thought himself adorable.

“Oh yes!” Carlos said He immediately started to babble on about time and clocks. “It was pretty amazing to take apart a clock and find actual gears and a crystal inside of it! Ooh! And I don’t have to constantly look at the sun and wonder how fast it’s going across the sky and figure out how much time I have left out in the field.”

Carlos opened the passenger side door of his car for Cecil as he talked.

Cecil smiled, and kissed Carlos on the cheek before he got into the car. Cecil loved hearing the scientist ramble about things that he found interesting, his tone changes making even the most boring things nice to listen to. Cecil wasn’t quite sure what he was talking about with the inside of the clocks, but he nodded none the less. Part of him wondered if he preferred it here over night vale.

“Seatbelt,” Carlos reminded and he went around to get into the driver’s seat. “So, what do you think we should have for dinner? Hot dogs? We can get buns too – wheat is still legal here.”

“Sounds good to me Carlos. I wonder if they have a Big Rico’s around here.. we could get pizza for dinner some night!” He said excitedly once he found out about the Wheat situation. He put on his seatbelt as he waited for Carlos to get in.

“No, Big Rico’s is a one-off restaurant,” Carlos explained. “They just managed to monopolize all the pizza in Night Vale. We can have some Little Caeser’s or something though – ooh! Papa’s Pizza! I used to have that a lot as a kid! We should go there!”

He held off on the temptation to say No One does a slice like Big Rico’s as he said it often when they sponsored the radio station. But pizza sounded good, he hasn’t had any since wheat was made illegal. “Papa’s Pizza sounds wonderful to Me,” Cecil said with a smile.

“Wanna do that for dinner tonight, or plan it for another day?” Carlos asked him. Honestly, Carlos hadn’t thought about having pizza outside of Night Vale. He was honestly a little tired of marinara and cheese soup (what Big Rico’s called a ‘pizza’), so an actual slice with bread would be pretty nice.

“I think you mentioned something about hot dogs for tonight? So we can have pizza another time.” Cecil said, excited to go into town and to meet Carlos’s new friends.

“Alright – we’ll do that today then,” Carlos agreed with a smile. “I guess I need to pick up some more coffee too – I’ve got some, but with you here we’ll need more. Let’s make a list…”

Cecil opened the notes app on his phone and typed in ‘hot dogs, buns, coffee,’ and was ready to add whatever Carlos suggested.

“Sounds good to me,”

“What else do you want to eat while you’re here?” Carlos asked him.
