*just gives him a patient smile* That’s fine.
You know him better, so that’s a good idea. *offers the tissue again* Go ahead
and dry your eyes. It’s okay – it won’t bite.

I’m not judging. I’m really not. Just take the
tissue. You can eat it or something to hide the evidence if you really really
want to.

*max sniffles* n-no I’m fine…*his eyes fill again and again he quickly wipes them off on his hoodie*

*sighs softly* C’mon, kid… it’s okay. Look,
you’re getting your hoodie all messy.

*max starts to cry a bit, but hides it as best as he can* n-no

*reaches and gently takes the kid’s hand,
pulling his arm away. He reaches forward with the tissue to dab at his tears*

*blinks* What? Hey, now, it’s okay kiddo. I
get it. It’s okay… though… I gotta ask if you’ve said anything to the counselors
about it.

No! Don’t even think about mentioning it! I’ll kill you!

*max seems to shrink in on himself* w-well, I’ve been meaning to talk to David…but…*he pauses, unsure*

*kneels down and places both hands on his
knee, watching the child* It’s okay. Are you afraid he won’t take it seriously
or won’t understand?

*he seems to shrink even further* I…I don’t know…he seems to happy and naive to understand…*his eyes fill with tears but he quickly wipes them away*

*nods* I see. Well, that’s okay. *reaches into
his pocket for a packet of handkerchiefs. Takes one out and offers it to Max*

Angie says lots of nice things about David. She says he cares a lot. So
he might understand. You never know until you try. But that’s up to you
completely.

*max pushes the handkerchief away* I…I want to talk to someone…but I don’t know how…

*nods again* That’s okay. I understand
sometimes you just don’t feel safe about it.

Hey… I’m working nearby. I’ve got a campsite
close to the Sleepy Peak Peak volcano to study it. I know I’m just a strange
adult, but I’ll be around working and coming in to check on Angie. I want to
offer that you can talk to me if you’d like. But it’s totally up to you of
course.
