Carlos was surprised that Hancock was
suddenly hugging him, but after a partial moment he put his arms around the
other and held onto him, trying to breath out high-strung tension in his chest.

“I’m sorry,” he murmured. “I didn’t mean to…
freak like that either. I… I shouldn’t have.
And… I shouldn’t have switched languages on you. Y-you’re right, I was
talking about myself and stuff but… I’m sorry if- if that shut you out or
something…” Carlos made a soft, pitiful sound and tried to bury his head into
Hancock’s shoulder. “My head hurts…”

“But you are smart!” Carlos insisted. “It’s no small mental feat to keep this place running! You know who’s who and where their strengths are and you know how to command respect and compliance from people, which is something I could never do. And… and I think you’re very good at reading people as well. Heh, I’m, like… pretty bad at that. I didn’t have the social development I probably should have had outside of interacting with the same forty or so people for over three decades, you know?”

“That comes along with livin’ out here for so long, ya learn to read folks and…. honestly, most of us wastelanders are pretty good manipulators, it ain’t exactly a skill I’m proud of, but it’s a necessary one.” He smiled, patting Carlos on the knee. “Anyway, the point is, I’m not offended. We’ve all got our strengths and I know you’ll catch up on the whole reading people part, it just takes a little more time bein’ out here and experiencin’ this shithole firsthand.”

Carlos shrugged slightly. “Maybe,” he said, though his tone suggested he didn’t think he would.

He continued to take apart the machine, putting aside parts that were usable to be cleaned and tossing broken parts into the far corner. “I’m surprised at how many of these parts survived,” he admitted. “The machine probably hadn’t been used for 200 years before we found it.”

Carlos nodded a bit and finally leaned in to press a gentle kiss to Hancock’s mouth. He sat back and took a deep breath before smiling again. He was trying not to cry, and it was working. Hancock was just so sweet and it touched Carlos… but he really didn’t wanna cry yet when he wasn’t even done with the presents yet.

“Um… Let’s finish eating, “ he said. “I’ve… I’ve got something else for you, but I left it in the warehouse. So… mind walking with me to go get it? After we eat?”

“There’s more?” He had a guilty look on his face, how was he supposed to keep up with that? Anything he did at this point would seem like an afterthought, like he was just trying to make it up to Carlos for being a bad partner to begin with–– at least in his mind. “I’ll–– yeah, of course I’ll come with you. I hope you didn’t go overboard though, I’m already feelin’ pretty guilty about not doing anything for you.”

Carlos looked at him, his eyebrows starting to scrunch together in worry. “Wha… Hancock, I didn’t want you to feel guilty!” he told the other man. “I – you don’t have to! You already do so much for me! And I wanted to do something nice for you! It’s okay, I promise.” Carlos put an arm around Hancock to pull him in for a side-hug. “I don’t wan’t you to feel bad, Han…”

“Oh- I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to run into you. I don’t want any trouble I promise, I just –” Carlos paused when recognition dawned on him. “Oh, um… hello again. Um… Kiara, right?” ((fallout au — i made him misremember her name on purpose ;3 I hope this is ok))

There’s a small moment of confusion on her face before it is replaced with the same recognition. Kira smiles a bit, impressed that he remembered her at all.

Even if incorrectly, it was close enough.

“Kira, but yeah.” She nods happily, “It’s been awhile, I honestly didn’t expect to see you ever again!” A small giggle escapes her, “I’m afraid I cannot recall your name, I’m horrible with names. But I remember, from Concord right?”

“Huh? Oh, um… no thanks. I don’t… really like tea,” Carlos said awkwardly. “But, uh, thank you.”

Carlos glanced out the window, glad to have the little bit of openness to the room. It did make him feel better, and he started to look around again, focusing now on some of the books. Some looked very decently intact – probably still readable for the most part. That was very nice… at least some people still appreciated books. If he’d ever had the opportunity or time, he’d have loved to sit down and pour over pre-war mechanical and science books.

“It’s, uh… very nice to see that people still use books for their intended purpose, rather than just kindling,” he told her truthfully with a very slight smile. “They’re lucky they ended up here.”

“Really now?” Kira pondered, she didn’t usually drink coffee, so she had none. There was nothing else to offer besides that. “I’ve been rather fond of tea…. perhaps something else? A… common food item of sorts; water? I’m sure I have something if you like. If not, I will not press you further.”

So Kira offered as she watched the kettle a bit, now pulling down a few old and dented tins out of the cupboards. Setting them on the counter, she looked to him as he took survey of her books. The whole ‘office’ area was cluttered with them. Stacked on all the end tables and on the bookshelf behind her desk and even some on the floor. None seemed to be in an order of any sort, but little did he know that they were.

“Kindling?!” Kira exclaimed with wide eyes. Deep down in her heart she knew people used the paper for kindling and as tissue paper, but it always broke her heart. She didn’t want to believe that anyone would do such a thing.

She clears her throat, hands picking at a stray thread in her jeans.

“My apologies.” She notes with a solemn expression as she looks for a tea cup. “They are lucky I must say. They are one of the only things I am proud of in this world. I collect them, regardless of subject. As I think I told you before, if you find any you don’t want and they’re in decent shape, I’d pay you for them. I fix them you see. And rebind them.” She smiles widely, pointing to the top shelf of her bookshelf. There’s a row of spines, all the same shade of brown leather.

“Nothing too fancy of course, but I make sure they’re readable and not falling apart. They’ll never be perfect, but I try my best in my spare time.”

“Well, uh… I’d really like a cup of coffee,” Carlos admitted
to her with a sheepish smile. “I haven’t had one of those since leaving
the vault… But I understand that that’s hard to come by, so I don’t
mind much if you don’t have it or you don’t wanna offer it. And you
don’t have to go into your clean water supply for me… I’m alright.”

He
was surprised when she said she’d buy a book from him however. “You’d
really buy books off of me?” he asked her. “For how much?” He started to
wonder if the caps he could get would be worth him carrying around the
pre-war tomes until he reached Diamond City again. He also had to
consider how often he’d actually make it to Diamond City – the old city
around it was crawling with hostile gangs and monsters so making the
trip was considerably dangerous.

Carlos hesitated a bit at the doorway, but he clenched his fist and stepped inside. He would have preferred to stay outside, though he wasn’t sure why. God, the Wasteland had not been good for his nerves at all.

He stopped awkwardly a bit inside from the door and looked around. He wondered what would be a good place to sit before deciding on a chair closest to him. He walked around to the front and gingerly sat down, still looking around.

“I haven’t been inside of a place that was actually… um, lived in in a while,” he commented. “It… it looks very nice.”

He seemed nervous to be inside, though she wondered why that was. Kira herself was brought up in a bunker so too terribly open spaces made her a bit nervous. Was he claustrophobic or something?

The ‘doctor’ closed the door behind them but opened one of the curtains on the window right next to the door. Perhaps he’d feel better knowing that he could still see outside and that people could see him inside? That he was… ‘ok’? Was he afraid of her or something?

As the scavenger took a seat, Kira glided her way across the floor to the small kitchenette where she took down a dented metal kettle. Now filling it with bottled water and setting it on the hot plate on the counter.

“Thank you, I didn’t do it myself trust me.” Kira smiles, “Most of this stuff is donated, or Doctor Sun’s, etcetera etcetera. All the books lying around in such a mess are mine though. That’s how you know I live here.” Kira giggles warmly before pointing to the kettle.

“Tea?”

“Huh? Oh, um… no thanks. I don’t… really like tea,” Carlos said awkwardly. “But, uh, thank you.”

Carlos looked after her, but he nodded and zipped his bag up again before following her. “A- um, alright!” he said.

This was good – at least the salvage he had could go to what they were meant to be used for. It hurt a little bit, selling the salvage when it just was going to be melted or pounded down to raw materials. But this way, specialized pre-war design would continue to be used and maybe he’d get a few more caps out of it as well.

He felt alright going with her. Most of the shops were open-air, and considering they were in a city he thought that he’d be safe enough. “So, uh… what sort of things do you do here? Like, I mean… what’s your job like?” Carlos was a bit curious, but he mostly wanted to just start some kind of conversation.

Kira smiled as he followed, luckily Diamond City wasn’t all that big. Her office was actually already within sight. Her stroll was a bit slow, letting him follow and take a look around if he wanted.

What kind of tea did she have at home anyway?

Thinking it over, she didn’t even hear him as her a question till she caught the end of it.

“Eh?” She questioned, pushing her glasses up, but she had a general idea what he was asking.

“Ohh, I help run the clinic. Right over there.” Kira points to the split clinic, half inside and half out. Sun was tending to his chem table, seemingly busy with his work. “With Doctor Sun, the man you see tinkering.” She smiles to the other, “Sun treats the humans, I specialize in ghouls, synthetics, and supermutants from time to time. But alot of what I do here in town is merely manufacture chems and help Sun with his work when he needs it. Such as buying from people like you and refurbishing the materials to be used later.” She nods definitively, waving to Doctor Sun who didn’t notice her before opening the door to her personal office.

The room she opened the door to had her desk, a few bookshelves, a seating area, a small kitchenette, and a few small tables littered with old magazines and books.

“Feel free to sit wherever you like.”

Carlos hesitated a bit at the doorway, but he clenched his fist and stepped inside. He would have preferred to stay outside, though he wasn’t sure why. God, the Wasteland had not been good for his nerves at all.

Carlos smiled slightly. “I might,” he said. He reached his
hand up to shift his bag to push his point. “Um… I think I picked up what looks
like a tray of some kind, and some instruments. I thought I could sell them for
materials, but if they’re good and you can find a use for them…” He tried to
think if he had any more bags too. Well, there was one, but it had a hole poked
in it. Duct tape might fix it, but he wasn’t sure if that’s what Kira wanted to
do with it.

“Do you…. Would you like to have a look?”

He seemed rather sweet, she could see it in his smile. Kira trusted him though she didn’t know the first thing about this man

“Oh? Is that so? That sounds interesting for sure. I could use replacements if they’re the right kind. Just in case you know?” Kira smiles, distributing her weight onto one hip.

When asked, Kira’s face brightened up, smiling widely, “Yeah actually! If you want, you can come to my office so you can have a seat. It’s always awkward having to dig through stuff when you don’t have space eh?” She mentions, she could even possibly buy some stuff for Sun too depending on what he carried.

“Come along, Carlos.” She beckons him before turning on a heel and heading towards her ‘office’.

Carlos looked after her, but he nodded and zipped his bag up again before following her. “A- um, alright!” he said.

Carlos quickly turned his head up to look
at Hancock properly. “It doesn’t have to be like that! I promise, it doesn’t!”
he exclaimed. “You didn’t fuck anything up, I absolutely promise! It – It was –
I almost did, but I promise I – I’ll get… I’ll get better!”

Carlos’ eyes started to drift down to
Hancock’s chest as he tried to gather his thoughts together. God, his words –
they were just all over the place in his head and he couldn’t string something
coherent for the life of him!

“Or, I mean, I’ll learn to – or- or,
actually… F—Augh, ¡¡Hijo de puta!! No
seas un maldito imbécil!! ¡Mierda palabras estúpidas!”

Carlos clutched Hancock’s hand in his,
looking up at the other with a frustrated determination.

I’m
not leaving you over this!
” he stated firmly. “I won’t do that to you!
O-okay?” Please be okay with that, please be okay with that, please be okay
with that – God, Carlos’ head was starting to hurt now he was so stressed.
