Carlos, what’s your opinion on parents not accepting their children for who they are and calling their gender identity or sexuality a phase? I mean, yes, most of the time your sexuality and gender do change, for example, I used to identify as a lesbian, then bisexual, then trans and panseuxal and now i’m panseuxal and a nonbinary trans person. But still, do you think parents should even judge their children like that?

I think a parent should support their child in exploring their identity. A child should honestly be allowed to try on different labels and see if it fits them.

Dismissing a ‘new’ identity  as ‘oh, it won’t last’ or ‘no you’re not because you won’t be later’ actually makes a child start to question themselves and not feel confident in themselves. When a parent criticizes us once, our brains have a funny way of latching onto that criticism and replaying it over and over in our head. So even if the parent doesn’t say it as often, we still hear it.

People need to ask questions, especially about themselves. It’s how they figure themselves out and learn how to grow. A parent dismissing a child’s pursuits of knowledge, even if it’s personal knowledge, in my opinion is a severe disservice to the child.
