“Well, the one I saw, I remember that it had really weird, um… ‘like’ descriptions,” Carlos said. “What are those called? Um, um, um…” He snapped his fingers, trying to think. “Not a metaphor, but… I remember one of the sentences said something like ‘the skin of her breasts were soft and silky like a purse’ and ‘his hands gripped her with the strength of a farmer milking a cow’s udders’. Just, in my opinion… very poor descriptions. I’ve never seen a silky purse.”

“Heh, well shit, that’s just….. bad.” He laughed, shaking his head at the ridiculousness of that description. “I can’t say any’a the shit I’ve read was anythin’ like that, it was pretty damn decent, actually. Maybe I’ll let ya borrow it sometime so you can see what erotica is really supposed to be like.”

Carlos chuckled, keeping his eyes on his project. “I dunno
if I’d take you up on that,” he said. “Just… I dunno. Maybe later. I’m really
not too curious about it.” Except he kinda was, but he wasn’t going to admit
that to another person. Nor did he really wanna be caught, dead or alive, with
Mayor Hancock’s erotica in his possession. That’d… that’d just be embarrassing.

Suddenly though, something came to him. “A simile! That’s what it is! When
comparing something with something like it in writing, it’s called a simile!
Damn, I feel dumb not remembering that; I apologize.”

Carlos’ breath hitched slightly at Hancock’s response. He tried not to look at the other man. He couldn’t get bashful here – he was going to give Hancock a present, and he needed to be chivalrous!

Carlos stopped them at the warehouse door where his workshop was set up and he dug in his pocket for the key. He opened the door and held it for Hancock to get inside first.

The lack of any real response was slightly disappointing, but the ghoul didn’t let that bother him, not when Carlos was being so sweet. When the other opened the door for him, Hancock leaned in to peck him on the cheek before stepping through, a warm smile on his lips. “Thank you, darlin’. Such a gentlemen, heh.”

Carlos made a surprised little squeaky noise when Hancock kissed him, but he quickly tried to cover it up with a frankly obnoxious-sounding clearing of his throat. He closed the door behind them and went toward his desk.

“Uh, go ahead and sit down, Han,” he said, gesturing toward his chair. “Gimme a second to find it. I put it away so it wouldn’t get hurt while I worked.” Carlos started to go through the top drawer of the desk, taking tools out and setting them on top so that they weren’t in the way.

Carlos looked at Hancock and smiled. “Oh yeah – it’s a lot spicier and there’s plenty of cheese in it. But the candy – it’s not just sugar candy, but there’s chili-powder stuff too that’s not exactly sweet but not exactly bitter either. Just kind of… tangy. Ooh! And the wizard side of Hispanic culture has some great food – Flying Quetzalcoatl chili and mango treats are one of my favorites. There’s a trick to eating it without getting bit too much.”

“Chili powder candy? That…… sounds like too much for me.” He laughed, perfectly comfortable admitting he couldn’t handle much in the way of spice. “What’s the chili like? What do ya mean it bites you? Is it shaped like a–– actually, what’s a Quetzacoatl? Is that some new world magical creature I’ve just never heard of?”

Carlos just smiled wider, a bit amused. “It’s not too spicy, I promise,” he said. “But I understand that it’s not to everybody’s taste. I really like them. And yeah… the treat is charmed to be animated. Kind of like your guys’ chocolate frogs. This candy’s just a bit sharper… in a couple of ways. And yeah, it’s based on a magical creature. It um…” Carlos thought for a second, trying to figure out how to describe it. “It’s… like a big snake. But with lots of feathers and shimmery scales.”

Carlos sat quietly for a few moments, not doing anything
with the soap or the washcloth. He wondered if Hancock would prefer to take a
little break from him. Just… for a day. Carlos thought maybe he could go into
the workshop early and work for the day – there was always something that
needed fixing or tuning up in the town after all. Yeah… he could do that.

He looked at the man in front of him, watching him wash
himself for another moment. Carlos thought he should give him a hand…
Well, he could just ask.

“Hey, uh… do you want me to…” Carlos trailed off. His voice sounded incredibly vulnerable and Carlos didn’t like it. He didn’t
want to talk too much and have a new reason to be upset. Gently he put his hand
on Hancock’s shoulder blade, hoping that the other would get his meaning.

Carlos looked at him. “Really?” he asked. “I… I’ve got to admit, I don’t read erotic literature. I tried one once and… it was just kinda… weird? To me? It was too descriptive about the wrong things… if that makes sense.”

“I doesn’t make a whole lotta sense.” He laughed and offered a small shrug. “I dunno what kinda stuff you were readin’, but what I’ve seen…. the focus is all on genitals mostly, heh. That’s kinda what ya expect from erotica though.”

“Well, the one I saw, I remember that it had really weird, um… ‘like’ descriptions,” Carlos said. “What are those called? Carlos laughed. “Nah – that sort of joke is for April Fool’s Day. Hm… In fact – thanks for the idea!” Carlos brought Hancock’s hand to his mouth to press a light kiss to the knuckles. “But seriously… it is something tangible that is not me, I promise.”

Carlos opened the door to the statehouse and peeked out into the alley. He tried to keep his grip on Hancock’s hand loose, in case the other wanted to pull away out in public. Carlos understood the concern about his image, he did… but in the Vault they wouldn’t have had to even worry about that sort of thing.

“Shame, you’re all I ever wanted.” He replied easily, shooting a wink over at Carlos. Even as they stepped outside, Hancock didn’t let go of his hand, still gripping it tight as they walked down the alley. At one point he may have been more concerned about showing his softer side to the people of Goodneighbor, but it didn’t take long for that worry to fade, he knew Carlos would be safe, as long as the Watch was around to make sure no one targeted him just to get to the ghoul, he’d made a point of recruiting carefully for a reason and it was never really his reputation he was worried about, only the danger that could be brought to the other man if that image was damaged enough to make someone brave enough to do something very stupid.

Carlos’ breath hitched slightly at Hancock’s response. He tried not to look at the other man. He couldn’t get bashful here – he was going to give Hancock a present, and he needed to be chivalrous!

“I’m pretty sure erotica isn’t written with ‘love’ in mind,” Carlos told him with an amused smile. “‘Lust’ and ‘fun’, more like it, huh?” He removed another part from the terminal – the hard drive. He was extra careful setting it down out of the way so it wouldn’t accidentally get nudged or hit.

“Eh, I think it depends on the writer.” He chuckled softly. “I’ll agree, most of it is all about the sex, which is great, heh, but I’ve read a few that focused on love just as much, you’d be surprised.”

Carlos looked at him. “Really?” he asked. “I… I’ve got to admit, I don’t read erotic literature. I tried one once and… it was just kinda… weird? To me? It was too descriptive about the wrong things… if that makes sense.”

Carlos smiled at him. “Pretty small,” he said. “Like… it can fit in the palm of your hand.” Carlos tried to remember where he left it. In the drawer, he thought – just to make sure Fahrenheit or somebody didn’t accidentally knock it to the ground.

“Hmmm…. that does sound pretty small.” He lifted Carlos’ hand in his and took a look at it, a soft snort escaping as a thought occurred to him. “We’re not gonna get there just for you to tell me it’s holding your hand that’s my present, are ya? Not that I’d necessarily mind that, heh.”

Carlos looked at him, an excited light in his eyes. “You can
ask,” he confirmed. “But I can’t guarantee I’ll tell you much. It’s just down
the alley after all so we’ll get to it really soon. I just… I spent so much
time on it and I’m eager for you to see it. I do think you’re going to like it.”

“I’m sure I’ll love it, it is from you, after all.” He smiled warmly and squeezed Carlos’ hand a little tighter as they walked, tempted to even go so far as to rest his head against his shoulder, though he wasn’t sure how cuddly he wanted the people of Goodneighbor to see him being. “What size is it? Big or small?”

Carlos smiled at him. “Pretty small,” he said. “Like… it can fit in the palm of your hand.” Carlos tried to remember where he left it. In the drawer, he thought – just to make sure Fahrenheit or somebody didn’t accidentally knock it to the ground.

Carlos smiled at him, very eager to show Hancock his present. Without thinking much about it he took hooked his arm around Hancock’s and gently tugged him toward the door.

“I really think you’re going to like it,” Carlos told him. “I spent quite a while finding the right hardware for it and it took me just as long making sure everything worked just right.”

A light chuckle escaped as Carlos took his arm and Hancock happily fell into step beside him, unaffected by the thought that anyone might see them that way, they’d been together long enough by this point that everyone would already know, anyway.

“You definitely got me interested, sweetheart. Can I ask anything about it? Or are ya just gonna keep hypin’ me up until we get there?”

Carlos looked at him, an excited light in his eyes. “You can
