Both
were impressed by the presentation and the depth he went into to
describe the device and why he chose it. It was a great idea and he
smiled seeing it feeling it struck close to home as it would have been
how Rhodey had to get around had he not had the stark tech legs.

“Well Carlos it seems you have some great concepts and an amazing
mind there. I’m thinking we take him in as a staff member as soon as
possible. I’m liking his attitude more and more. Shocking how hammer
spoiled it.”

“We will look into it but if Tony is liking you then I think you might just have an edge over everyone else.”

Carlos looked between the two with surprise, but also with no small amount of hope. “Re-
uh… really?” he asked. “I, um, well,
thank you! Thank you very much. If nothing else, that – that’s so great to hear
and I appreciate that.” He smiled at them, deciding he didn’t need to bother
with hiding how much that made him happy.

If they ended up not choosing him over someone else (and
honestly, he wouldn’t blame them if they did), then he would at least have a great
interview in his mind to help him move forward.

“Of all the people here, why me?”

“Why not you?” He tilted his head a little with a soft frown.

“Yeah
if you want to. I was hoping you would but I get it if you don’t.” He
ran a hand through his hair a little and chewed on his lip. “I was
hoping we kinda could now.”

“Uh – um, yes, sir, sure,” Carlos said. “We can go now. I’m… I’m at a stopping point here anyway.” He turned and quickly saved the changes on the design he was working on before closing it up.

“You want to get changed? Maybe borrow some more casual clothes of mine? I’m sure they would fit.” He smiled softly to the other and stepped back to let him get out of where he was sitting.

Carlos chuckled – not because it was funny, but to him the idea seemed ridiculous. Borrowing Tony Stark’s clothes? Who did that?

“I’ve got a flannel in my locker I can trade out for my labcoat,” he told his boss as he stood up. He pushed the chair back in and rolled his shoulder to get any kinks he had out of his back.

Tony frowned a little hearing the chuckle before he nodded at the reply he got. “Alright, I just thought to offer you know? You’ve been in those all day so wasn’t sure what you wanted to do. Never hurts to offer.” He smiled and stretched out a little himself before looking at the design on screen. “This is looking really good.”

Carlos would’ve made a quip about himself smelling bad, but decided to drop it in favor of not sounding gross in front of his boss. He instead responded to the second comment.

“You think so?” Carlos asked, genuinely curious about any feedback. “You think it’s going in the right direction?”

Tony smiled softly as he looked over the design taking his time to look through everything that was there. “Yeah I think it looks really good. I’d need to see it finished to know fully but it looks good.”

“Now then, let’s get you changed.” He stepped back and began to head towards the locker rooms.

Carlos followed beside him. “So, uh… what’s this appearance going to be about?” he asked. Carlos didn’t usually pay attention to where Stark was going in events, as his concern was more about when Stark was available to regarding work.

Tony
smiled softly hearing him cover himself and he just chuckled. “It’s
okay, I’m never good with wording things, I’m more a man of action
rather than discussion so yeah I get that a lot.” He hoped Carlos would
get to meet him, he was sure the pair would get along great.

“We can do this however works best. I think it might be best if we
let you talk about this plan, why you chose this plan, just have you sit
and explain it. We like to know why ideas were used in a certain way
and would like as much detail explained as possible. Doesn’t matter if
you came up with it after you finished drawing it but we would like you
to explain this and why you think Stark tech might want to produce
this.” Pepper spoke calmly and softly to him hoping to ease his worries.

“We will go over any extras after, anything you think we need to see
can be seen after all this after all so just focus on the product you
designed first and then we can talk about your portfolio.”

Carlos listened to them closely and nodded. “Okay,” he said.
Then again, more to himself, “Okay…” He took a breath. Carlos then turned the
design around and pushed it toward the middle of the table so he could still
reach it, but Miss Potts and Mr Stark could see it. He’d have liked an easel,
but meh… maybe next time. Hopefully next time. Gosh, he hoped there was a next
time.

“Well, as I’ve mentioned before, my brother’s paraplegic,”
Carlos said. “In his case, it’s not something that can be cured, so he is bound
to a wheelchair. But he’s not the only one – The last statistic I recall was
that there were 3.6 million people who use a wheelchair for mobility.
Which
includes not just paraplegia, but also cerebral palsy, severe arthritis,
paralysis, and other states that require assisted mobility. However, so much of
America and the world isn’t ‘wheelchair accessible’. These facts are what inspired me in this design of a sort
of ‘all-terrain’ wheelchair.”

Carlos began to explain his draft piece. He put special
emphasis on the seating, which would have a mechanical equilibrium device in it
to prevent spills from the chair, and on the wheels themselves, which were
designed to flex and break apart to aid in varying terrain and even climb up
small ledges and stairs. Carlos was in ‘Engineer Mode’, and had fell into the act of
presenting with relative ease – a skill he’d developed from his past career. He
was surprised at the relative ease he fell into it.

“Huh. Okay, but what if you didn’t do that…the spraying thing. Can it still be saved or did someone just ruin a perfectly good shirt?” Well, there goes 5 bucks he’ll never get back. And yes that’s a lot! He’s a college student, not a billionaire! “Simple but effective. Never underestimate the basics.”

The arachnid blinked back as the man started to apologize, putting up his hands to try and calm the other. “Whoa, whoa. Mr. Spider-man was my father, please call me Spidey. And no, you’re not. Slow day today. Not battling pumpkin heads everyday you know.” he chuckled, shaking his head. “Don’t worry, if I had something to do. I’d be doing it.”

Carlos laughed softly at the joke. “Pumpkins are for Halloween, not for evil.” He looked at Spider-man with a smile.

“You could also pull the fabric tight over a bowl like a drum then sprinkle some salt on it to help absorb the stain,” Carlos suggested. “Then you slowly pour boiling water over the stain before machine washing it. Uh… regarding the shirt, I mean. You use the hottest setting, but don’t use the dryer until the stain’s completely gone. Otherwise you’ll set it.”

“Well hey some of us like bugs and arachnids and others like robots and computers.” Peter fell in the middle. Was a fan of both. “Nothing too special about the suit, most are more interested in the shooters.” he pulled back his sleeve to give a glimpse before rolling it back on to cover it up. “But hey, it’s about time someone took notice to the suit. Do you know how hard it was to sew in all the web patterns?”

Carlos glanced at the shooters, but didn’t get as much of a look at them as he wanted.

“I have no idea, but I think I can guess…” Carlos said, in response to Spider-Man’s question. “Since they stretch all across your suit, you didn’t use an embroidery machine. So they were probably ‘drawn’ by hand, line by line. I’m also wondering about the material – is it like nylon? I mean, it’s form-fitting and I assume it would have to be resistant to friction from the sort of antics you pull… and what are your eye lenses made of?”

“Sorry, but my secrets aren’t so easily spilled. But hey, you sure know about your fabrics. You wouldn’t happen to know how to get punch out of a white shirt would you?” he asked, before sighing out and nodding. “Ah, what the heck? I suppose my fashion tips couldn’t be that bad to spill. It’s a latex based suit, but I’ve add to the material to make it more durable. As for my goggles,” he tapped one of the white eyes lightly, “It’s plastic based.”

“Immediately rinse it with cold water and then spray some oxygen cleaner on it,” Carlos replied. He nodded, listening to Spider-Man as he took in some of the details in the suit and mask. “Huh… that’s very interesting.”

He blinked as something suddenly occurred to him. “Um, I”m sorry – Im’ not keeping you, am I, Mr Spider-Man?” he asked. “If- if you’ve got something to do…”

“Don’t tell me I mixed up salt with sugar.” (probably in coffee or something)

“Okay,” Tony gasped hoarsely in between hard coughs.  “I’ll just…suffer in silence.”  He let out another long series of coughs, but the corners of his mouth were turned up in a smirk, and he was looking at Carlos with a merry gleam in his eyes.

Carlos snorted softly and reached to take the offending cup of coffee away. “You want me to make you a new one?” he asked.

“That depends,” Tony grinned without coughing this time, “are you going to run a sample of it through the chem analyzer before you give it to me?” He was laughing silently, kind of enjoying Carlos’s unintentional knack of breaking him out of a rut.

Carlos smiled sheepishly, glancing away. “Uh… would you like me to?” he asked. It was a joke, obviously, but Carlos was playing along. Maybe he’ll do it just to make sure Stark knew that it hadn’t been on purpose… Carlos didn’t know what the hell happened. He suspected his own cup was also compromised.
