Max was sitting at the dock, he knew it was late but he didn’t want to be in his tent now. He was shaking with tears running down his face, the nightmare that woke him up still lingered in the back of his mind. He hated it. “F-fuck…” was all he could muster out as he stared into the lake.

(( I’m not good at writig starters yet but I’m working on it 🙂

Carlos had come to the lake to take some samples and see if
he could catch a glimpse of any bioluminescent creatures in the water. He knew
there were strange things down there… he just knew it!

However, Carlos then noticed a figure sitting on the docks
nearby at the Camp Campbell side of the lake. A very small figure who shouldn’t
be anywhere near the lake at this
time of night. So Carlos gathered up his equipment and started to walk toward
the docks, his flashlight lighting his way.

“Hey!” he called to the figure as he got closer. “Hey, kiddo
– I think it’s past your bed time! What’re you doing out here?” As he got
closer he thought the figure looked familiar. The shape of the hair though was
what clued him in.

“Max? Hey, buddy, what’re you doing?”

Max’s head shot up, he thought everyone was asleep and that he was alone. “W-what? Nothing.” He wiped his eyes to a least make it seem like he wasn’t crying. “I-I’m fine.”

Carlos blinked at the kid. He hadn’t even asked how he was doing. And something didn’t really sound quite right in Max’ voice. Maybe he was tired?

“Well, what are you doing out of bed? David and Gwen don’t know that you’re here, do they?”

“D-Does it matter?”

Max wished he had rather stayed in his tent, at least then nobody else could see him like this.

Oh – there was definitely
something in Max’s voice. Something not right.

Carlos got closer and he slowly knelt down – just behind
max. “Hey… Max, is something wrong? Are you okay?”

Max shrugged, he wasn’t okay, but he wasn’t going to admit it.

Well, he didn’t say he was fine again. Carlos figured that
this was a tactic to not actually admit something was wrong. He scooted a
little closer to Max until he was right beside the kid. He sat down fully and
set his flashlight beside him, leaving it on so that the light shown out into
the water in front of them, giving it kind of an inky black, almost eldritch,
look.

“You know… you shouldn’t be so close to the water late at
night,” he told Max gently. He decided to start with a caring comment to see
how Max reacted.

Max turned away from Carlos, refusing to talk. His shoulders were noticably shaking.

Carlos looked at Max and frowned. Okay… no more pretenses. “Max,
what’s wrong? Can you tell me why you’re out here? Did something happen?”

Max, is everything okay?

Alright, he does.

*blinks* He… does have clothes? Or he does need something?

I think he needs clothes, I really haven’t been able to get any for him.

Oh – I can get some of those for you! What size does he
wear? Wait – actually, I can take you guys to Sleepy Peak to go shopping!

Oh no, wait… I can’t do that. I’m not a counselor… Um… I can still do the shopping anyhow.

We can probably ask David if you can take us, he probably won’t mind, you’re trustable.

I guess I could… but then he’d probably wanna go shopping with you instead. Which I’m fine with, of course.

Yeah you’re probably right.

I’ll pick something up from Sleepy Peak next i head into town. Maybe mention to David next time you see him so he can take you.

Alright, will do.

Sounds good kiddo.Good luck.

Thanks for the help.

It’s no trouble, Max. You ever need anything, just ask.
