Carlos looked to her, a little big concerned. “Uh… do you need to?” he asked her. “Are you okay?”

“I’d like to know how it works, too,” she gave him a sad little smile and shook her head. “But, they must have their secrets as well as anyone else, no? It is not my place to force that from them.”

“Yeah… I guess not,” he said. “Um, so… kids. What does she like? Uh… what – what’s her name again?”

“She is called Jade. She likes music and drawing things.”

“Music and drawing. Okay. Huh… I wonder if she’d like Animusic…” He probably still had that DVD stashed somewhere.

“It would be worth a try if you were wanting to entertain the children,” Mia shrugged. She had no idea what he was talking about, but assumed it was probably either a show or a cd that the scientist could put on for the kids.

“Alright. Ooh – does she like Bob Ross?” he then asked suddenly.

“I, ah, have not chosen to give her much experience with Terrandi television,” Mia’s response was almost sheepish.

“Oh,” Carlos said. “Well… he’s an artist. A painter. Very soft-spoken and he teaches techniques through his videos. I’m not a painter, but it’s pretty mesmerising to watch him work. Now that I think of it, he’d probably interest the other kids too if they watched… hm…”

Carlos looked to her, a little big concerned. “Uh… do you need to?” he asked her. “Are you okay?”

“There is a rare breed of dragon with gemstones as their breath power. Anything not able to be mined can be collected from them when they choose to share, or scavenged from a battlefield. Gems are plentiful for us, but not so for most other planets. Hence why we can use them as currency and still have them to trade.”

“Oh, interesting!” carlos said. “I wonder how they do it. Do they consume minerals and other raw elements?”

“Not even the Riders or the royal family are permitted to know the secrets of draconic magic,” Mia replied with a shrug. “I know the breath powers of every breed, but not how they do it, or how nearly all of them can keep from injuring their Rider if the Rider is caught in the blast.”

Carlos was a little disappointed by that answer. “Oh. Well, okay, I guess,” he said. “That’s a shame. But okay.” Darnit – he wanted to know something about magic biology.

Carlos looked to her, a little big concerned. “Uh… do you need to?” he asked her. “Are you okay?”

“It’s stored inside an actual earring, Carlos,” she explained patiently, flicking at the thing to put her communiscanner away again. “Unless you remove it yourself, it won’t come out so you’ll always have it on you. Waterproof, too.”

“Ooh, fancy,” Carlos said. “You said they were cheap? How? I… humans can barely even begin to imagine that kind of tech, much less mass-produce it.”

“Please remember that our main currency is diamonds and gemstones. Anything we can’t find on our planet, we can trade gems for with other planets. Makes getting materials for advancing technology much easier than needing to find them on world itself.”

“Diamonds? Really? Are they not as common on your planet then? Or just uncommon enough to use as currency? Here on Earth their worth is pretty inflated.”

Carlos looked to her, a little big concerned. “Uh… do you need to?” he asked her. “Are you okay?”

Carlos blinked. He gave a low whistle. “Wow, that’s impressive,” he said. He wanted to reach out and touch… but he wasn’t going to do that without permission. But God, it looked so cool… “So… it’s like an App for your… communiscanners then?”

“App?” she tilted her head to one side, not quite understanding. Apparently, there were some things even her magitech couldn’t translate. Frowning, Mia flicked her eyes towards the the screen her communiscanner had produced, obviously looking up the answer for herself.

“….Oh. App. Yes, something like that. If you like, I can have one for you when I bring the children? As a gift for watching them for me.”

Carlos blinked. “Wait, really? You would?” he asked her. “I… I would be just fine borrowing one for the time-being if you need them back home.”

“It’s no trouble,” came the quick reply. “They are cheap to make, easy to mass produce. They are the Alshondi version of your cell phones. But harder to steal or lose.”

“Harder to lose?” he asked. “How so? Is there some kind of… I dunno, implanting involved or something?”
