Newt smiled happily, and nodded. “You and my mother would get along very well.” He said with a chuckle.

Edwardo looked at Newt curiously. He smiled. “Oh? She sounds lovely already. If you don’t mind me asking, Newt, what’s your family like?”

The young man’s eyes lit up at the mention of his family. “My mother raises hippogriffs. She lives out in the country outside London.” He said. “She’s part of the reason I became so interested in magical creatures, I suppose.” He added. “My brother, Theseus, is an auror. Quite an accomplished one, in fact.” He said, pride clear on his face. “We don’t always get along, but I suppose that’s common among brothers.”

Carlos’ eyebrows furrowed curiously. “An auror?” If Newt told him about Carlos’ family…

No, he wouldn’t do that. But the mention of an auror did put a pang of concern in Carlos’ gut. Just a little one.

“Yeah, brothers are sometimes like that,” Mikey said. “How close are you? Regarding age? Carlos and I are only about 18 months apart.”

☝️ – Tap my muse on the shoulder

Newt had been walking down the street, case in hand when he suddenly felt a tap on his shoulder. He paused, not sure who was there, but he turned to see–

“Carlos?” He asked in disbelief. It had been ages since he’d last seen the man. What were the chances of seeing him again?

“It
is.” Newt nodded, and looked over as they were approached for their
order. He ordered for the both of them, but let Carlos pick his drink
while he ordered himself a tea. He settled against the chair as they
waited, looking down at his case and smiling softly as it rattled.

Carlos got some pumpkin juice to go with his meal and let the menu in his hands fly away back to where it was needed.

He heard the rattling, but initially Carlos didn’t understand where it was coming from. He looked down to see if Newt was tapping his foot when he noticed the case.

“Oh! Is everything okay in there?”

Newt looked up at the question, and smiled. “Yes, they’re just a little restless. I think that was Mary, actually.” He said. “One of the Erumpent babies.” He clarified.

“Oh!” Carlos exclaimed in an excited tone. “A baby? That’s so nice – is she new? How old is she?”

“She’s fairly new, yes.” Newt nodded. “About half a year old, now, and she’s discovered quite recently that she likes headbutting things.” He said.

Carlos snorted softly. “Uh-oh… I don’t know much about animals, but… aren’t erumpents the ones with the exploding horns?” he asked.

Newt gratefully accepted the conchas, and smiled warmly at the man. “Thank you.” He said, and began to nibble on it as well. “These are incredible, Edwardo.” He complimented.

“Thank you very much, Newt,” Edwardo said with a beaming grin. “If you want some more to take with you, you let me know, alright?”

“He’s getting to the Abuelito stage of his life,” Carlos whispered to Newt with a slight smirk. “He’s going to make sure you have more than enough food to eat while you’re here and when you go.”

Newt smiled gratefully at the offer, and took another bite. He tilted his head at the comment, and smiled. “Abuelito?” He asked quietly. “What’s that?” He asked.

“It means ‘little old man’,” Carlos told him. “It happens to old Hispanic people who do nothing but cook all day.”

“I can hear you, Carlito,” Edwardo said suddenly with a teasing smile to his son. “I may be old, but not old enough for my hearing to go quite yet.”

Carlos just smiled innocently at his father.

Newt smiled, and looked down with a silent chuckle. “It’s a good trait.” He said, looking to Edwardo. “It will make many people happy.” He added.

“And I like making people happy,” Edwardo agreed. “One of the surest ways to make others’ happy is through their stomach. And cooking for two boys certainly gave me a lot of practice.”

“Muggles.” He corrected, chuckling quietly. “And the bangers are good.” He added. “Chips are…” He paused, trying to think of how to explain them. “They’re like chopped up potato that we fry up, so they’re crispy on the outside and soft on the inside.” He explained.

Carlos tried to imagine it as Newt explained it. “Okay… well, there’s not much that can go wrong with potatoes. Those sound good too.” Carlos looked at the menu again. “Okay – Guinness stew. Does it have actual Guinness in it?”

Newt smiled, and nodded a little. “It does. I’ve never had it, but my brother quite enjoys it.” He said, looking over the menu. “I’m likely going to have the fish and chips. They don’t have that in America, I’ve quite missed it.” He said.

Carlos nodded as he looked over the options. “I think the Bangers and Mash is good… Mash is more potatoes, right?”
