My Fingers Slipped @partyplanningforsuckers The heat only seemed to be packed in at the circus, with the hundreds of citizens that had swarmed like ants and the intense rides that seemed to have a life of their own. Carlos hadn’t been to a circus in years – not since he was little. But there had been a raffle at work and Carlos had won a coupon for a free ticket. He kinda hoped that his brother and/or his dad were in town so he could invite them to go with him.

Carlos made his way to the ticket office that was set up, standing in the line with his coupon as he looked at everything around him. Some things were different than what he remembered or imagined a circus to be like, but not everything could be a dated cliche trope he supposed.

Once at the ticket office he smiled and offered the coupon. “Hey… this any good?” he asked in a joking manner.

@partyplanningforsuckers

“Could
you?” He pressed curiously, “What like some kind of diet pills or
something?” He joked lightly and shuffled a bit, tucking his hands into
his pants.

Carlos pressed his lips together a bit in thought. “I’m not sure,” he admitted. “I would like to know a little bit more about your physiology to see what I can do, but of course you’ve already proven to be a challenging study. I just need to find out if there’s even a way to get a drug into your body. Your lack of blood will make it near impossible to spread.” Carlos’ gaze drifted off as he started to thin. “Hm… maybe if I give it to you in the blood, since your body seems to absorb that so easily… Hm, yes, it can be done…”

Skip blushed at all of the words and phrases that were directed towards him, for once he was going to be helped instead of shunned. Naturally he smiled eagerly and nodded, “I’d love to try anything you can think of,”

He rubbed his neck nervously, “Really, it’s such a relief to hear you want to help- thank you so much.”

Carlos looked at him, a little bit like he was pulled out of a distracted space. “Hm? Oh – oh, yeah, sure. I’m a scientist – it’s what I do.” He offered Skip a smile. “So… in the meantime, would you like to come up with your ‘act’ for this afternoon? By that, I mean demonstrating, like, different sequences in how your power works. It’ll help my research to see a few different levels of difficulty with your powers.”

At
the looks on their faces, he blushed and smiled like any good performer
would as he bowed to the audience. He took a free seat close to the
front, deciding not to look at the free food that wanted to be
hypnotized.

“I’m fine- I’m sorry.. I didn’t realize I had to be here at a certain time, have you already discussed what you want to happen?”

“Well, I was just telling everyone about you. And most all of us are excited for the experiment in hypnotism,” Carlos said with a grin. “Skip, do you have any plans tonight?”

“Plans? N-no, I don’t.” He lied, hoping he could text Earl to cancel soon or else it would be considered being stood up. Skip wasn’t that heartless. He tapped his foot, blushing at the idea that Carlos had told all about him.

“So- did you all have something in mind? Any limitations or boundaries you’re worried about?”

“Well, I’m sure the limits are different for everyone,” Carlos said, looking at the other scientists. “But I think when they volunteer they can tell you about it on an individual basis. But the main limit I have is that this is just for observing your hypnotism abilities, as well as for fun. So I just ask that you stick to that.” Carlos smiled at him. “I know this is short-notice and all, so I really do hope that tonight is alright with you.”

The vampire shook his head and strung up a cheerful smile, “Oh- really, no worries. I get short notices from my team all the time, it’s nothing new I promise.” He assured as he made a dismissive gesture, and allowed his eyes to scan the room.

Surely, these people knew what they were getting into.

“If that’s everything, we’ll all go ahead and get back to work,” Carlos then explained to the rest of the team. “We’ll wrap up early today and I’ll set up to observe and the rest of us can be prepared to have fun.”

With that, the scientists started to disperse with a loud murmur and Carlos went over to Skip.

“So, how are you?” Carlos asked. “I asked earlier, but I don’t think you said…”

He allowed himself to drop the overly excited persona, his eyes looked tired as one gazed into them but not over worked, simply stressed.

“Honestly, I’m not too good.. I’m really stressing out about what I should do with Earl- though that doesn’t have anything to do with this..” He shifted the subject, “I’m trying new tactics to quit drinking blood so much.. but- they’re all for nothing.”

Carlos’ smile dropped. “New tactics to quit?” he asked. “Really? Is it just not working for you?”

Though even as  Carlos asked, he could sort of understand. It must be difficult finding blood that would be given to a vampire willingly.

Skip nodded and held his breath, “So- should I start practicing or do you just want me to wing it, out there?” He pressed slightly nervously, glancing up to Carlos for an answer.

“Well, you and I can talk about it. We can come up with a plan for what you want to do,” Carlos said. “Though… I’d also like to talk about the blood-eating… I dunno, maybe I can help?”

The
acrobat began to search for the door then, moving over to the exit and
awkwardly standing by it to make his point that he was ready for bed..
or freedom to hunt.

“Anyway- I better.. head off.. it’s late and I’m sure there are some
young people out there, looking for a nice time..” He didn’t appreciate
going on, fearing to expose another secret.

Carlos went to see him out. “Alright,” he said. “Try to stay out of trouble. I hope you have fun. Be safe – at least, as safe as you can be in Night Vale.”

He left with a nod and headed out of the labs, tucking his hands into his pockets and casting his gaze out towards the sunset before smirking. It would be a fine night for another hunt, all he had to do was hope that it would work this time.

Carlos went back to looking over the samples he had from Skip. He was sure Skip was going to have an easier time getting blood than he had for science. Night Valiens didn’t trust science – but they might value the fact that another being would need blood to live.

So Skip was probably going to be okay. If not, he knew where he could get blood. Carlos would gladly provide him some from the fridge.

Carlos worked well into the night, as he habitually did. Only after what was supposed to be midnight did he go upstairs to his apartment for the night.

Though the morning was dreary and was greeted by the cowering of multiple citizens while others cut off their dog’s ear for good luck, Skip was helping himself to the morning ritual of coffee and a cigarette. He knew these things wouldn’t hurt him, at least not the cigarette. So it was that day that he had a dozen refills of both, Skip didn’t quite like the smell of the cigarette but he just thought the smoke looked neat.

It was after these things that he made Earl a priority, calling him back to apologize for how distant he had been and setting up another date to hopefully give the father another chance.

Though his hopes were low.

Then he took a shower and got dressed in some jeans and an old circus show shirt, popping open an umbrella and putting in star hoop earrings, he made off to the labs.

That morning Carlos had the scientists gathered and he discussed with them his study and experiments. Most were pretty excited when he proposed the hypnotism show and almost all of them agreed to participate or watch it, with only one scientist declining to attend though they encouraged everyone else to have fun.

Things were looking pretty good.

The vampire was chipper and on time as the sun rose just above the lowest trees, pushing open the doors of the lab and smiling with his fanged grin.

“Hello..? Jake?” He paused, “Carlos- I didn’t know what you wanted me to wear- so I didn’t over dress..” He mumbled as he stepped further inside, glancing into the back hallways for the scientists.

The scientists were still sat down in their meeting, and Carlos spotted Skip poking his head out. He smiled. “Oh, hey! Skip! Welcome, welcome – how are you?”

The other scientists turned to look at the newcomer, some with curiosity and some with a bit of excitement.
