“Yeah…
and your staying away from them…. I have others I hate I can fling to
the void…. half should not have been there…… could have been killed…”

Carlos looked at Yondu, a little confused. “But… that’s what
you brought me on the ship for. Engineering and maitenence… right? That’s what
I do.” Though thinking about being in space… in the void… if he had his music
playing in the space suit and he didn’t look out, he supposed he’d be alright.

“….. only if you have a partner or me there… just in case…… and only someone from my inner circle..”

A partner would be a good idea, now that Carlos thought
about it. Someone to help distract from the utter nothingness around them. “I…
would actually welcome that,” Carlos said. “Yeah. Sure – train me on the space
suits and we can see what we can do about the hull.” He offered Yondu a little
smile, that he hoped was encouraging.

This was honestly a scary-as-shit idea, but it was something
that needed to be done – preferably by someone who knew engineering, like him.

“Aliright. Over the course of the next few weeks I’ll teach ya.”

Over those weeks they had been to dozens of planets and stations. Each one a little date yo du would take Carlos on. The crew was smaller after a large purge after another attempt from a group of crew members.

Half but was deathly ill. The void has done his damage and his body needed to heal.

Carlos thought he might be getting close to being ready to
fix the hull. He’d been going over schematics of the area that needed fixing
and thought he knew what was needed.

However, Carlos didn’t really sleep very well. Trying to
sleep in a shared room was sort of like his first weeks in space – he just
couldn’t do it. He was trying not to let it show though.

“How’s Half-nut doing?” Carlos asked Yondu one day at
breakfast. Kraglin just looked over at him, but didn’t say anything as he
continued to eat.

Yondu nods to Tullk going over to the cook to get some food for his boys then walks by patting half’s head.

Carlos followed Yondu closely. He just gave the two Ravagers
a nod as he passed. He picked up one of the trays placed on the counter for
Kraglin and Peter and just waited to follow Yondu’s lead.

Yondu headed off Carlos following just as half went and burrowed under tullks shirt for warmth.

Carlos made a mental note to ask about Half-nut later. They made
it out of the mess hall into the corridor back toward Yondu’s quarters.

“How often do people get sick here?” Carlos asked YOndu
suddenly. “Is it just on occasion like any other workplace?”

“We’re all pretty hardy from sick… lots of vaccines and such…. but the void…. well that’s something you can’t fight….”

Carlos nodded, understanding. It would probably take Half-nut
a while to get back to work.

“How about Peter?” he asked. “How well does he do here?
Sickness-wise.”

“Been here since he was a kid… so he does well. Still get these terrian bouts of colds but space is a bit chilly at times.”

Carlos hummed, nodding. “Okay,” he said softly, mind still
thinking about it. “I suppose I might be alright… if everyone else is
vaccinated and Peter does alright…”

Nods. “Of course you will. And if you catch sick… we’ll. I’ll bundle ya up and make ya rest with some soup.”

Carlos resisted the urge to chuckle. He looked at Yondu,
smiling slightly. “I… thanks. I’ll try not to get sick though, all the same.
Those engines are fixed now, but… it sounds like there’s some other places that
need to get patched up, too.”

“Ravagers come in all sorts. While we all know how to shoot a gun… we do t all do it.”

“Yeah, see, I don’t even know how to shoot a gun,” Carlos
joked. Of course he did – he used to work for one of the most advanced weapons
companies on Earth… before Hammer went crazy.

“Well I’ll have to teach you then won’t I. More time together to get to know each other.”

Carlos chuckled. “Sounds romantic,” he teased. But he smiled
and nodded. “I think I’d like that,” he said. “Seriously – it could be fun.

Smiles back and looks up at a bout of coughing from another table as halfnut coughs then presses closer to Tullk side.

Carlos looked up over at them. Huh… he must be getting sick.
Carlos hoped Halfnut would be smart enough to drink his fluids and get some
rest. He was still afraid of getting a space-disease that he hadn’t been
vaccinated for.

He turns back to Yondu. “I’m done eating. Wanna get Peter
and Ob… Kraglin their lunch and snacks?”

“Yeah. Let’s do that.” Looks at Tullk meeting the other man’s eyes asking silently if halfnut was ok or not.

Half coughs again as cook brings over some hot soup.

Carlos smiled slightly. He glanced at the other couple
before standing up and gathering up his dishes. It looked like he was being taken care of … that was good.

Half sips at the soup pressing against and under tullks arm for as much warmth as he could get.

Yondu hums looking at them. “What happened…. skin looks frosty…. got some freeze scabs starting..”

Tullk looked up at Yondu. “An observation corridor on the
east side of the ship,” he said, as if that would explain everything. He paused
for a moment to help Half-nut hold his spoon against his cold, chapped lips. “The
hull was damaged, and nobody noticed,” Tullk suddenly went on. “It breeched
while he was walking through. Protective doors over the windows shut before
Half-nut was sucked out, but it was open long enough for heat to be taken away
and for him to get cold.”

Carlos couldn’t help but stare in awe and fear. “Oh my god…”

Half sips the soup as Tullk helps feed him his body felt so cold and his bones ached.

Yondu frowns. “That was the side we got hit hardest… damnit.. I told maintenace to repair it…. half… ask the doc to give heat blankets to him for a while. Captains orders… and get him to bed… he’s burning up…”

Tullk nodded. “Yes, Captain,” he said. He rubbed Half-nut’s
shoulder as he ate. “There you go, lad… eat up, Jamie. Let me take care o’ you…”

This really weighed heavy on Carlos’ heart out of sympathy.
Poor Half-nut… He hoped that the Ravager would get better soon.

Jamie looks at Tullk and nods then goes into a mout or sneezes and groans leaning against Tullk.

Yondu sighs watching them.

“Jesus,” Carlos said softly. “Is he going to be okay?” he
asked Yondu quietly.

“I…. maybe…. getting caught in the void…. that’s…. deadly…. he’s possibly gotten pneumonia……. gonna take a while…”

Jamie whimpers starting a sneezing for again followed by hark hacking wet coughs.

Tullk just held onto Half-nut, keeping him steady through
the coughing fit. Carlos just watched on.

“He should see the medic to make sure,” he told Yondu. “That
coughing doesn’t sound right – there might be fluid in his lungs.”

“I’ll take ‘im in soon,” Tullk told them. “Captain – go see
to your boy. I’ll let you know if this is anything to get too worried about.”
