A Holiday Surprise (closed w/ selfmedicatingmayor)

Carlos made a noise of surprise as he was pulled in. His hands came up to hold Hancock’s waist and his eyes fluttered shut as they kissed. When they broke apart, Carlos smiled at him, a little dreamily.

“I’m glad you like it,“ he said softly. He swallowed slightly. “Um, admittedly that holotape is a bit beefier than standard ones. It… it took a little bit finding the right parts to put it together. But I already had the games – my brother was a programmer and he beefed up my Pipboy for me. So… um… yeah.”

“Ah, that makes more sense.” He paused, looking down at the holotape in his hand with a warm smile, it was amazing that the other man could even wrap his head around all of this, it was all over his head.

“You’re incredible.” He breathed, smile growing wider again as he looked back into Carlos’ eyes. “Really, you’re absolutely amazing, sweetheart.”

Carlos bit his lip to keep from smiling too goofily. “I… thanks, Hancock. So are you. I wanted to make sure I got you something cool, that nobody else had… well, other than me, I guess. Something that you’d really appreciate. And you like playing the games, so… yeah.” He knew he was babbling a bit, but he couldn’t help it. He was just so relieved and happy that Hancock liked the present. He was honestly a little worried that Hancock’s not growing up with a holiday spirit would damper it. But it seemed like everything was alright.

Carlos glanced at Hancock. Was the flirting serious? Well, Carlos wasn’t exactly discouraging him with the ‘ring’ joke (alluding to a proposition of marriage – he was being completely silly regarding that).

“You should see my dad – he’s the real cute one of the family,” Carlos told him with a grin.

It was mostly serious, Hancock was one to speak his mind when it came to how attractive he found his friends, but the redhead hardly expected anything to come of it.

“He a real silver fox then? And ya said he could cook, right? I s’pose that makes him the whole package, huh?”

Carlos nodded to Hancock, smiling. “Oh yeah – he’s absolutely great at cooking,” he told Hancock. “He worked as a chef in his day. But he’s also a dad, so beware of Dad Jokes. Heheh!”

Carlos shook his head. “Not yet, but almost,” he said. He showed Hancock the drive. “Some of the soldering in the connections are eroded,” Carlos explained, pointing to a couple spots on the attached board. “If you hear a zapping or a sort of almost grinding, clicking noise when trying to run a holotape, then that means that the electricity is actually jumping to connect.”

“Oh…. hmm…. “ The ghoul frowned as he looked down at the piece in question, debating whether or not he wanted to get rid of the part. “Is there anything you can do to fix it? Or is it too far gone? I’d rather not have that shit set everything else on fire, y’know?”

Carlos looked at it. “Well… there’s two options,” he said. I can solder it back in place and the connections will work as good as new. But I’d have to be creative with how to apply that since I doubt you have a soldering gun lying around… or spare solder.” Carlos set the piece down. “The other option is to wait until we can get a replacement for it. It still has some use… but in the state, it is a little dangerous and risks burning out more of the parts inside and shorting out.”

Carlos noticed that Hancock was getting anxious, but for once he didn’t feel bad about it. That was because there was nothing for Hancock to worry about at all.

“I wanna kiss you,” Carlos blurted out. “Hard. But… my hands and face are dirty. And I don’t wanna stain your coat.” A he started to flush in his face, but he kept his eyes on Hancock.

The longer it took Carlos to say it back, the more his anxiety grew. He tried to push it down, to ignore it and pretend like everything was alright, but the tightness in his chest wouldn’t go away and he was having a hard time even just speaking as it dragged on.

“I uh–– do you…. wanna go clean up?” He asked hesitantly, not particularly fond of the idea of letting Carlos go right now, afraid he might just run.

Carlos finally looked away to glance around. He spotted a clean(ish) cloth on his workbench and nodded to it. “Hand that over here so I can at least wipe off.”

Carlos’ heart was pounding. He wanted to grab Hancock and kiss the life out of him, but he didn’t want to ruin this moment by smearing grease and oil everywhere.

Carlos rubbed at one of his eyes. He frowned sympathetically. He shifted closer to the other and pulled him into a hug, rubbing his shoulder. “I’m sorry, hon…” he murmured. “Do you need to talk about it?”

“I….. don’t know if I want to bother you with heavy talk…..” He replied softly as he moved in closer and curled up against him. “I’m….. just hold me for a while?”

“Okay,” Carlos said softly. “I can absolutely do that.” He gently nuzzled Hancock’s forehead before pressing a kiss there. He rubbed Hancock’s back and just held him close, taking a deep breath and letting it out with a tired yawn.

Carlos’ heart lurched and he felt himself begin to panic
again. Hancock was disappointed, and in his fragile emotional state this was devastating to Carlos. Am I ever going to stop fucking up? Apparently
not because he didn’t even need to say a word to hurt people he cared about!

He hadn’t been speaking because he didn’t want to cry again.
But his eyes and nose burned anyway with oncoming tears as he silently began to
berate himself anew. What is wrong with
me? No, really, what the
FUCK is wrong with me?? Why the hell am I even
here – what on Earth made me think it was okay to stay here in the first
place!?

Carlos tried to keep himself together. He swallowed around
the painful lump in this throat and squeezed his eyes shut for a moment to
clear out the tears. He sniffed and kept trying to wash Hancock’s back as
steady as he could.

He didn’t deserve Hancock. Carlos had been stuck in a vault
for too long and he clearly wasn’t cut out for relationships – much less one
with a ghoul, if Carlos was just going to be an ass and not be okay with things. He… God. He was just garbage.

Carlos stopped washing Hancock. The hand holding the
washcloth dropped into the water and the other hand left Hancock’s shoulder to
cover Carlos’ face. The tears wouldn’t stop and his throat hurt from the
tightness of him trying to hold back the noise that wanted to come out. He wasn’t
going to do this in a bathtub… please, God, don’t let him do this in a bathtub
with Hancock right there!

Carlos blushed a bit and he tried not to let his smile grow too big. He turned his attention to Hancock’s hands instead, watching the wrinkled digits take apart the wrapping that Carlos had carefully put together. Then he smiled wider.

“That label is actually a newspaper ad for Red Menace that I found and I decided to use it,” Carlos explained. “I used some rubber cement to adhere it to the holotape. The tape itself actually has more than just one game on it – there’s six of them.”

“Wait, six? How’s that possible? I didn’t know they could even hold that much.” He beamed even bigger as he looked the game over, wishing he’d brought something to play it on right there. He looked up at Carlos again and reached up to grab him by the collar to tug him down into a deep kiss, lingering for a moment before pulling away again. “Thank you, sweetheart, this is perfect.”

Carlos made a noise of surprise as he was pulled in. His hands came up to hold Hancock’s waist and his eyes fluttered shut as they kissed. When they broke apart, Carlos smiled at him, a little dreamily.

Carlos smiled. “Absolutely,” he said. “You are welcome to ‘ring’ me whenever, Hancock. On the phone, that is.. heheh.” Okay, that was a terrible joke. Hancock probably didn’t even get it.

He didn’t quite get it, but the redhead let out a chuckle nonetheless, not wanting to be rude. “I’ll keep that in mind, handsome. It’d be nice to have my own personal tour guide if I ever get over there, ‘specially one so good looking.”
