“Hm…. Sounds pretty good. Bigger tub…” Better than two grown
men sitting in one tub together, no matter how much they like being this close.
“If there’s electrical components… maybe it’s how it keeps the water hot? That’ll
be nice too.” He nodded slightly against Hancock’s shoulder. “Next research
project…” he promised sleepily.

“Observed statistics say I shouldn’t be this lucky either,” Carlos murmured, holding him. “Thanks for saving my butt from my own stupidity… I am so unbelievably grateful to be here with you.” Thinking about what could have happened weighed really heavy on Carlos’ heart. Somehow, he got a chance to pull himself up when others don’t. It wasn’t fair, but Carlos was very grateful. Just… so grateful.
“Sounds smarter when you say it.” He snorted. After a few moments, Hancock pulled away, taking Carlos’ face in his hands and pressing a deep kiss to his lips before climbing off of him fully and standing up to smooth the wrinkles out of his jacket. “Alright then, you uh, you said there was somethin’ else, right? Shall we?”
Carlos sat there silently for a moment. He blinked up at Hancock, a little dazed from the kiss, but then he blinked himself to awareness. “Oh, uh – yeah, hang on,” he said.
Carlos wanted to finish up his bowl before the broth got cold again so he picked up the bowl and quickly started to drink it down, getting some soaked into his mustache. Carlos set the empty bowl down with a satisfied sigh and stood up.
“It’s down in the workshop,” he said, wiping his mouth on his sleeve – the shirt needed to be washed soon anyway.

“Oh, I know,” Carlos said. “I know, you don’t do that to
people. And yeah, I… I certainly know how they would feel.” At the end of the
day, Carlos supposed he was just glad that there was something he could do for
Hancock and he didn’t have to feel guilty for accepting the guy’s help. Too
much. He still couldn’t believe it had taken him so long to figure out how he
could actually give back to Hancock.“Hey…..” He started, reaching out to place a hand on Carlos’ shoulder, a soft smile on his face. “You know you don’t have to feel that way, right? I’m happy to have you around, no matter what you’re doin’ and there’s no shame in needing a little help, this world is fuckin’ cruel as hell and we’re all better off if we work together to survive. Even I couldn’t have made it this far on my own, I’d be dead a hundred times over if it weren’t for the people around me, ya feel me?”
Carlos looked at him, a little confused why Hancock would be
about how Carlos felt.
Because he’s a nice
guy, Carlos thought to himself. Nice
people do exist out here, no matter how rough it gets. It was nice to know
that, he supposed. And it was nice that his mental well-being wasn’t only his
own concern.
He smiled at the ghoul, grateful. “Thanks a lot, Mayor,” he
said. “I really do appreciate you saying that. And really… I’m happy that you
did come up with something for me to do for you.”
Carlos made a questioning noise and it took him a moment to
think about what Hancock said to him. “Uh… well, theoretically I could,” he
answered. “Though I can’t say I know
much about them… what made them so cool? Er… I guess hot, I should say.” He smiled a bit at his bad joke.

“Neither I, you,” Carlos returned gently. He leaned into Hancock and nuzzled a bit into his neck at the kiss. He was being real here… he had absolutely no idea where he’d be if he hadn’t met Hancock. Definitely not in a good place. He was actually able to think about Christmas and birthday presents of all things! It was… it was just incredible and he was so lucky.
Hancock went quiet, three little words stuck on the tip of his tongue, though he was afraid to actually speak them. Instead, the ghoul all but climbed into his lap and wrapped his arms around him, hugging him tight and turning his face into his neck to press another kiss to his skin. “I’m so glad you walked into my life, sunshine. Guys like me shouldn’t be so lucky.”

“Hmn?” Carlos hummed. “Oh… um… yeah, I think we can do this
again,” he agreed. He squeezed Hancock’s hand with his own. “One of my favorite things is to cuddle up with you
someplace warm.” He shut his eyes and sighed.

Carlos paused for a second, a little startled. “Uh… you didn’t put dust in your terminal on purpose so I could fix it for you, did you?” he asked, putting on a teasing smirk as he glanced at Hancock.
He was making a joke, but at the same time a really small part of him wondered if that’s why it took Hancock so long to get someone to look at the thing – because nobody with experience with terminals were in the ‘leeching’ part of the relationship. Not until Carlos showed up, that was.
“Heh, of course not.” He snorted, giving a little roll of his eyes. It hadn’t been his intention to make the other think he considered him a leech, in fact, there were very few people in town the ghoul did see that way, but he could tell by the sound of Carlos’ voice he’d said something that didn’t sit right with the other man. “Hey, y’know I ain’t callin’ folks leeches, right? I couldn’t give a shit if anyone I support actually worked, I just know a lotta folks ain’t happy if they don’t have somethin’ to do or don’t feel like they’re contributing, that’s all I meant.”
“Oh, I know,” Carlos said. “I know, you don’t do that to
people. And yeah, I… I certainly know how they would feel.” At the end of the

Carlos huffed slightly. “I think my opinion matters quite a bit,” he responded. “I’m a
scientist, Hancock – we’re known for being pretty smart.” He set down his bowl
of broth and wrapped his arms around Hancock, hugging him tightly. “You’re a
good thing, Hancock, I promise,” he said, his tone a little more serious. “If
you weren’t here, I probably wouldn’t be here either. Nor would a lot of people be.”That got a laugh out of the ghoul, he hadn’t expected that kind of sass from the other man, but he had to admit, he liked it. As Carlos went on, Hancock went quiet again, a small smile still on his lips as the other hugged him and he leaned into him slightly, giving a small nod. “Alright.” He murmured softly, looking over and tilting his chin up to press a kiss to his cheek. “You’re too good to me, sunshine. I don’t know what I’d do without you.”
“It’s… it depends. When I was a kid they took our wands away for the summer while we were enrolled at Ilvermorny,” Carlos explained. “But of course there are always kids who use magic by accident or study wandless magic out of spite. I… was closer to the former, really. In my experience though, it’s almost always been in front of my family. Though I think I told you about when I accidentally enlarged my friend’s rock collection…. he was a no-maj and some aurors came to, um… clean that up. But I didn’t get in trouble – I was only twelve or so.”
“They took your wands away?” He sounded almost horrified by that, he couldn’t imagine having his wand taken–– well, he could, but not by Hogwarts or the Ministry, the only person who’d ever taken his wand did so for much more sinister reasons. “Around here, you get to keep your wand during breaks with the condition ya don’t go performing magic in front of muggles, only exception is if your life is in danger. Using magic in self-defense while underage is justifiable and sometimes it’s entirely necessary, y’know?”
Carlos nodded. “Yeah, of course,” he agreed. “It’s just that we had a big scare with the Salem Witch Trials back since even before the United States became a thing, and then there was another scare in the 1910s or so… so MACUSA tried to get a handle on everything and keep children from performing magic when they were too young. I guess… we have enough issues with accidents. Then again, the US is a big country so… maybe the government is a bit stricter because there’s more wizards to deal with?”
Carlos smiled at the kiss, nodding in agreement. “For me, bathing
with someone other than your baby brother is definitely very nice,” Carlos murmured. “I had no idea… I’m kinda worried
this is going to spoil me now.” He chuckled slightly at the end, making a joke.
He wondered why Hancock paused in his sentence before, but Carlos didn’t ask –
he was just relieved everything was going well now. His headache was still there and he still felt like sleeping.
