For a second Carlos was just confused and he didn’t know
what Hancock was talking about. But then he understood and he was… well, he
was a little shocked. “Hancock… this might be news to you, but I don’t think
about sex all the time,” Carlos said, offering a little smile to show that he
was trying to be at least a bit humorous.

He squeezed Hancock’s hands, but then
relaxed his grip so that the other could take them back if he wanted to. “I’m
sorry you’re scared. Do… you wanna wait to do this? Bathing together I mean?”

Carlos smiled again. He set down his chopsticks to take Hancock’s hand in this. “I’m so glad to have met you too,” he said. “More than just that… God knows what would have happened to me without you.” Carlos brought Hancock’s hand up to his mouth and kissed the top of it, not breaking eye-contact with him. “This might not mean much to you, but… Merry Christmas, Han. This is my second Christmas out here, but it feels so much more like the real thing this time around. With you, I mean.”

A warm smile spread across the ghoul’s lips at that little kiss and he gave his hand a little squeeze. The next bit caught him off guard, however, a slightly confused looking crossing his face. “It’s–– I’m sorry, I uh…. I barely even know anyone that celebrates Christmas and I never did, myself, I didn’t realize that was today. If I’d known…. shit, I should’a done somethin’ for ya, I’m sorry, sunshine.”

Carlos just kept smiling. “It’s alright, Hancock… I promise. I knew you wouldn’t remember. I just wanted to do something nice for you… I like doing that for you when I can. Because you know… all you do is give to me and others.” He kissed his hand again. “If you wanna make it up to me though, I’ll let you. But believe me when I say I don’t mind – you’ve provided so much for me already.” Carlos swallowed around a little lump in his throat that was starting to develop from his talk… he should probably stop talking if he didn’t wanna tear up. Hancock could probably even hear it in his voice if he was paying attention to that.

Carlos just grinned about the jokes.

He watched the stone walls as they passed by, mentally imagining this little figure jumping over the peaks in the stones and keeping up with the car. “I think we can do the Causeway first,” he said. “If you say it doesn’t take too long, then let’s go for it.”

“Alright, Causeway it is then. Maybe I’ll make a couple calls while we’re lookin’ around the gift shop or something, try and get us a room–– or two rooms, I guess, before we head out so we got some idea where we’re goin’ for the night.”

Carlos then looked at him curiously. “Two rooms?” he asked. “Why not just one with two beds?” Granted, the room he had was one bed… but that’s all he needed. “Oh, should we think about what to eat too? Clearly I can’t find a good restaurant for the life of me, if you remember that whole ‘sandwich’ thing.” He smiled at Hancock.

Carlos laughed. “That would be kinda fun,” he admitted. “But to find any intact film reels… I wonder if it’s possible. After we work on the turret system, if you want.” Carlos removed the next casing – one that covered a large bar of metal that led from the board toward the fan. “This part right here – the funny-shaped bit of solid metal – it leads heat from the mainboard over to the fan here so that the fan can drive the heat out of the terminal.”

“Right, after the turret, I almost forgot, heh. We can take a look for some film, maybe if we can get into that library or somethin’ we’ll find some, don’t have to worry about it, just thought it might be fun.” He leaned in then as the conversation shifted back to the task at hand, taking a look at what Carlos was talking about. “Wait, how does that work? I’d think a hunk of metal there would keep the heat in, not lead it out. It’s not like an obstacle for it?”

Carlos smiled at Hancock and shook his head. “No. So, this is interesting – the fan cools this end of the piece,” he pointed to one side with the screwdriver. “So when that is cool, all the heat over here,” – he swirled the point of the screwdriver above the remaining parts like a wand – “tries to go back and warm it up. But then the fan just pushes the heat back out and cools it. It keeps going like that, heat that gets generated over here just flows out like a river just to get pushed out of the terminal.” As he explained he pointed the screwdriver at one end and drew it along to show the flow of motion. “It’s kind of like how wind gets created, actually… or how reactor cooling systems are used.”

Carlos’ gaze jumped up to Hancock’s face and he was confused. “What – No! No, of course not!” he said, maybe a bit loudly. He walked up to the ghoul and reached to take his hands. “No, Han – I’m not going to run away. This – admittedly it’ll take a bit to get used to this, but I’m not going to be a jackass and just leave you hanging. Okay? I promise, I’m not going to do that to you.”

Carlos grinned at him. “Oh, of course – your enigmatic being and charismatic personality are far too apparent to not consider,” he teased, and he leaned in to give Hancock another peck. “The Vault has population standards… only so many kids for the next generation can be made due to the amount of resources to go around. If I wasn’t going to do it because I couldn’t find a partner, someone else was gladly going to take the chance.” He shrugged slightly. “I really thought I just wasn’t going to get along with anyone well enough. I had friends, of course, but… that sort of thing didn’t click with us. Doesn’t mean I didn’t try though.”

“Hmm, maybe you were meant to be up here with us wastelanders.” He suggested with a soft smile as he reached over to place a hand on his leg, giving a little squeeze. “I for one am very happy you ended up here. I’m glad I got to meet you, sweetheart, my life’s a hell of a lot better with you in it.”

Carlos chuckled. “Alexa has standards, surprisingly – even as nice as she is,” Carlos replied with a smile. “I promise you, when the jokes come to me you’ll be the first to know. Whether you like it or not.” He winked with a little impish smirk on his face.

“Always give it a try, I’ll be sure to give ya my opinion on ‘em–– although, if they’re bad, I’m guessin’ a groan is what you’re aimin’ for, anyway, hmm?” As Hancock turned off onto another road, everything became narrower, the stone wall on the passenger side so close, Carlos could touch it if he opened the window, the cars passing on the driver’s side, just as close. “Alright, we should get there soon, do ya wanna try to find a hotel in the area first or head right to the Causeway? It should still be open for a few hours after we get there and it doesn’t take long to walk through, an hour or two, maybe.”

Carlos looked at him. “I’m guessing you’ve never had the opportunity to see a film, huh?” he asked. “I’ve only seen working cars from the film archives in the Vault. It all looks so flashy and calm – being able to travel great distances in relative leisure, a great big rumbling machine under you… I thought it looked great. You’re not the only one who wonders what it really was like. It seems like it was definitely taken for granted back then, before the war.”

Carlos turned back to carefully unscrew just about anything he saw, dropping screws and small pieces into the bowl one by one.

“Eh, not so much. Don’t really have a working television and I dunno how to watch anything on my terminal, so it’s uh…. it’s pretty much just books for me.” He shrugged, idly picking at a thread sticking out from the knee of his pants as he watched Carlos work. “Maybe sometime you can get somethin’ runnin’ so we can watch some shit, huh? That could be our next project, heh.”

Carlos laughed. “That would be kinda fun,” he admitted. “But to find any intact film reels… I wonder if it’s possible. Carlos smiled sheepishly at him. “You’re too kind,” he said softly. “And really… I could ask the same thing. I thought I’d be one of those guys who never got with anyone. You live with only forty people in a vault, it’s highly likely that you won’t be compatible with anyone.”

“Only forty people? Shit man, that’d make me crazy.” He chuckled, shaking his head a bit. Sure, settlements around the Commonwealth weren’t very big, but at least there were other places to go and other people to see. Hell, in Goodneighbor alone there were more than forty people at any given time. “That sounds like a sad life, man. I mean…. well, I’d think you’d end up having to get with someone at some point just to keep the population goin’ if that place is supposed to survive, but shit man…. maybe ya actually lucked out gettin’ stuck up here, there’s hundreds of folks to choose from–– and most importantly me, heh.”

Carlos grinned at him. “Oh, of course – your enigmatic being and charismatic personality are far too apparent to not consider,” he teased, and he leaned in to give Hancock another peck. “The Vault has population standards… only so many kids for the next generation can be made due to the amount of resources to go around.
