Carlos was stunned by the confession. Hancock was great – Carlos loved him. But… not in that way.

“I… I’m… I… well, thank you, Han. I’m… I’m flattered – I really am. It’s just…” Carlos huffed, frustrated with this. With his stuttering, with his situation, with… just all of this. “I’m sorry. I’m so sorry, I just… don’t feel the same way, Hancock. I like you – a lot. But… not like that. I’m so sorry…” Carlos felt horrible. He didn’t want to ever have to say something like that to Hancock. But… here they were.

Carlos looked at him. “Yeah?” he asked softly. “Well… I’m
sure I will. And hey – I’ll be getting my dad some material to scrapbook with,
so that’s a bonus too.” He smiled at Hancock wider.

“Heh, believe me, you’re gonna be floored by the sights I’m takin’ ya to, there’s nothin’ like it.” Alright, so maybe he was a little biased, but his country was beautiful and he took pride in it. “This drive’s gonna take a couple hours, things aren’t really too close around here–– actually, I guess you’re probably used to that though, yeah? Shit’s real far apart in America, I’m sure.”

Carlos shrugged and nodded. “Yeah – to get anywhere
interesting we have to travel at least that. At least here things are
relatively close together, huh? I’m looking forward to it.” He smiled again.

Carlos just hummed. “Well, I can at least try,” he said. “I
like talking about my work, so… if you don’t mind it too much I’d actually like
if you did ask questions.”

“I’ll be sure to ask a few at least, heh. Feel free to explain shit as ya go too, I’m interested in anything ya got to say, I just might not always know how to ask what I wanna know, y’know?”

Carlos nodded at him. “Yeah, sure,” he said with a smile. He
quickly rinsed off his hands and wiped them dry with a towel. “Okay… I think I’m
ready. You… don’t happen to have any clean rubbing alcohol, do you?”

Carlos was a little bit surprised at that confession. He
supposed he should feel touched by that. Yeah… he was touched.

“Well… thank you,” he said, offering Hancock a smile. “And
yeah, if you have any questions… don’t be afraid to ask them.”

“Careful when ya say shit like that, I’ve been known to annoy the shit outta people askin’ too many questions. It’s more the cleanin’ I’m interested in learning, I know the rest is over my head.”

Carlos just hummed. “Well, I can at least try,” he said. “I

if you did ask questions.”

Carlos thought he might have some idea, considering what
Hancock had admitted of his habits… but that was heavy stuff, so obviously he
wasn’t going to mention it. After all, he could be wrong.

“Well, right now, you’re taking a break,” Carlos told him
with a smile. “Going on a road trip with a Yankee.
It’s gonna be loads of fun, right?”

“Heh, I think Yankee is more of an English insult for ya, around these parts we’re rebels too.” He laughed lightly. “It’ll be fun, yeah. If it ain’t, you can yell at me. I’m lookin’ forward to it, it’s been a while since the last time I took a vacation–– actually, I can’t remember the last time I took a real vacation, think it was before my folks died.”

Carlos looked at him. “Yeah?” he asked softly. “Well… I’m
sure I will. And hey – I’ll be getting my dad some material to scrapbook with,
so that’s a bonus too.” He smiled at Hancock wider.

Carlos just smiled and shrugged. “Each to their own – some people
are able to do more, I guess.” He chuckled. “I didn’t expect you to have one. I
was just making a point – you’re clearly a very busy person, and it’s
incredible. I admire it, actually.”

“Really? I dunno, I just uh….” He paused, making a face as he tried to decide how to word what he was about to say. “I have a hard time sitting still, I think. One’a the reasons I got the dog, he keeps me outta the house and out of my head, heh. If I wasn’t working, I’m not really sure what I’d be doing instead, y’know?”

Carlos followed Hancock to the sink to set his bowl down. He
drank the rest of his juice and set the bottle down as well. “It’s no trouble
at all – I’ve been kinda eager to get to work on it.” He looked at Hancock. “Yeah,
you can help out. I know you wanted to be there just to make sure I didn’t
snoop or anything, right?”

“Heh, right, that’s uh…. it doesn’t matter.” He laughed lightly and offered a little shrug. “I trust you, I know you’re not gonna do shit, but I do wanna stick around anyway, if only to keep ya company and maybe learn a little somethin’.”

Carlos was a little bit surprised at that confession. He
supposed he should feel touched by that. Yeah… he was touched.

“Well… thank you,” he said, offering Hancock a smile. “And
yeah, if you have any questions… don’t be afraid to ask them.”

Carlos looked at him, for a second worrying that the other
might be serious. But then he realized that Hancock was just teasing him, and
so he chuckled sheepishly. “Nah, I just… haven’t had time. And I usually don’t
go on dates with people I’ve only met twice before.” Nor did he go on road
trips with those same people, but there they were…

He then smiled at Hancock. “I’m amazed still that you do so
much,” he said. And, presumably, all without a time-turner.”

Well, there went any hopes of that happening. Hancock’s smile faltered slightly, just a brief flicker of disappointment crossing his face as he turned back to the road. “Nowadays, most folks don’t even seem to meet their dates once before goin’ out, but I guess that’s probably more hookup culture, hmm? Can’t say I’m not guilty of jumping the gun a little, heh.”

Clearing his throat, the redhead shook his head and let out a soft chuckle, glancing back to Carlos. “Please, I barely trust myself with a wand, I can’t even imagine the kinds of shit I’d fuck up with a time-turner. I don’t mess with time, not a good idea, mate.”

Carlos just smiled and shrugged. “Each to their own – some people
are able to do more, I guess.” He chuckled. “I didn’t expect you to have one. I

Carlos shook his head. “No, thank you. I’m good. Give me a
second…”

Carlos picked up his bowl and dumped the remaining bits of
cereal and crumbs into his mouth. He chewed a bit, noisily, before taking the
juice he made and taking a giant gulp to wash all the dry food down.

He hummed and nodded. “Okay, ready,” he said as he stood up,
grabbing his empty bowl and the bottle with him.

“Heh, sorry, didn’t mean to make ya rush.” He chuckled, getting up from his seat and bringing his bowl over to the sink to leave it for later. “Is there anything I can do to help ya out with this? I mean, I don’t know anything about workin’ on terminals, but I could hand ya shit, or something.”

Carlos followed Hancock to the sink to set his bowl down. He
drank the rest of his juice and set the bottle down as well. “It’s no trouble

Carlos smiled a bit awkwardly and shrugged. “Yeah… It’s no
wonder I haven’t even been on a date in such a long time,” he joked. “But yeah,
I do love my work.  It keeps me very
busy, and I don’t mind it.”

“Would ya like to go on a date?” He grinned over at him, even winking for good measure. “I s’pose I can’t really judge, I’m pretty married to my work too. ‘Work’ being runnin’ those two pubs and a couple’a shelters. Nothin’ as impressive as what you do.”

Carlos looked at him, for a second worrying that the other
