Carlos just smiled at him. “Thank you so much,” he said
again. “This is definitely something to me,
and I’ll do my best – I promise.”

“I know you will, you always do.” Came Hancock’s soft reply, a warm smile on his lips. “Now then, you want anything else or you ready to get started on that terminal?”

Carlos shook his head. “No, thank you. I’m good. Give me a
second…”

Carlos picked up his bowl and dumped the remaining bits of
cereal and crumbs into his mouth. He chewed a bit, noisily, before taking the
juice he made and taking a giant gulp to wash all the dry food down.

He hummed and nodded. “Okay, ready,” he said as he stood up,
grabbing his empty bowl and the bottle with him.

Carlos sighed and nodded, smiling. “Yeah… I’d really
appreciate that, Hancock. Thank you very much.”

It was… kind of nice and touching that Hancock would be
looking out for him and offer him jobs to keep him out of the wasteland. Carlos
was really grateful for that. He hoped he’d be able to get the opportunity to
express that.

“It’s nothin’, really. You deserve it, you shouldn’t have to feel like you gotta go out and risk your life just to survive, y’know?”

While Hancock would probably say he’d do just this for anyone, that wasn’t entirely true. Since Carlos had started coming around, the ghoul had grown a soft spot for him, he appreciated him and his sweetness, it was a nice change from the grumpy cynicism he was used to and he wanted to keep him around.

Carlos just smiled at him. “Thank you so much,” he said
again. “This is definitely something to me,

Carlos’ smile turned sheepish. “Well, I mean… I do see
movies. With my brother. And… I like westerns. But… yeah, my hobbies mostly
surround my work. I have my own workspace at home, so…” He shrugged slightly,
still smiling but not looking at Hancock.

“Hey, it’s alright. Heh, sorry if it sounded like I was judgin’ ya, I didn’t mean to make ya feel awkward or anythin’.” He glanced over, offering an apologetic smile. “I’m just surprised by that, y’know? But if it’s work that makes ya happy, that’s great, I’m happy for ya.”

Carlos smiled a bit awkwardly and shrugged. “Yeah… It’s no
wonder I haven’t even been on a date in such a long time,” he joked. “But yeah,
I do love my work.  It keeps me very
busy, and I don’t mind it.”

Carlos smiled at him. “Well, I work with technology and
trying to combine them with modern magic. It’s… about all I do, really. I enjoy
it, which… is what I’d always wanted in a career.”

“That’s it? You don’t have any hobbies? Don’t go to the movies or play games or anythin’, just work? I mean, don’t get me wrong, it’s great ya like your work, I’m just curious.”

Carlos’ smile turned sheepish. “Well, I mean… I do see
movies. With my brother. And… I like westerns. But… yeah, my hobbies mostly
surround my work. I have my own workspace at home, so…” He shrugged slightly,
still smiling but not looking at Hancock.

Carlos smiled at him. “Well, thank you. It’s up to you, of
course… I’m just saying I’m willing. Math and engineering is just about all I’m
really good for.”

“I’ll let ya know if I need any help with that. Til then, we’ll put ya to work on that engineering stuff ya like to do, yeah? I’ll keep you busy so you don’t gotta go out into those ruins so much.”

Carlos sighed and nodded, smiling. “Yeah… I’d really
appreciate that, Hancock. Thank you very much.”

“Oh… um… okay. I guess… some folks are just like that,”
Carlos said a little awkwardly. He didn’t know what to say to that… without
insulting Hancock’s brother, who Carlos of course never met. He also wasn’t sure if ‘sorry’ was appropriate – the guy wasn’t dead, just… apparently an asshole.

“I’m sorry, I uh, I shouldn’t have brought him up, heh. Always get myself all worked up thinkin’ about him.” He glanced over, offering an apologetic little smile. “What uh…. what kinda stuff do ya do for fun back home?”

Carlos smiled at him. “Well, I work with technology and
trying to combine them with modern magic. It’s… about all I do, really. I enjoy
it, which… is what I’d always wanted in a career.”

Carlos nodded. “Yeah, I understand,” he said. “Engineering
requires a lot of numbers know-how, so I’ll be your man if you ever need the
help.” He ate more of his cereal, not really thinking about what he’d just said
to Hancock.

“Thanks man, that’s real sweet of ya. Ain’t many folks I’d trust to help me with some’a that stuff anyway, too many around here lookin’ to get one over on everyone, y’know? You seem like the trustworthy type though.”

Carlos smiled at him. “Well, thank you. It’s up to you, of
course… I’m just saying I’m willing. Math and engineering is just about all I’m

Carlos hummed and smiled. “Well, if you ever have a
particular problem you can’t figure out… Go ahead and ask me. I won’t judge
you.”

“I appreciate that. It’s mostly just simple math, y’know? But sometimes I just don’t have the brain power to figure it out quick and I get annoyed.”

Carlos nodded. “Yeah, I understand,” he said. “Engineering
requires a lot of numbers know-how, so I’ll be your man if you ever need the

“Well, I think so,” Carlos said. “But not painfully so.
Ideally you still gotta love each other and be able to be serious and
trustworthy. At least I think so…”

“Well, my brother was and always will be an asshole, probably gets that from my father, but he’s kinda taken it to a fuckin’ extreme, heh. At least it’s not just me he’s an ass too, I guess, just a dick in general.”

“Oh… um… okay. I guess… some folks are just like that,”
Carlos said a little awkwardly. He didn’t know what to say to that… without

“Wow. The most I’ve ever done was given my brother jinxed
pens on occasion. I didn’t want to be too
much of a butt to him, you know?” He offered the other man a slight smile.

“Heh, you were a good brother then. Only way I could ever fight back was with shit from the prank shops, but that ain’t anythin’ compared to the shit he pulled. Guess that’s what you’re supposed to do though, right? Fuck with each other? That’s how television makes it seem, anyway.”

“Well, I think so,” Carlos said. “But not painfully so.
