Carlos was taken off-guard, but he merely gave the other a contemplative frown before reaching out to comply. “Uh… alright,” he said.

She
smiled, letting out a soft, breathy laugh. “Glad I don’t sound as crazy
as I thought,” she said softly. “So, uh, you said you had a few
different degrees, huh? What’s that like? You must be, like, super
smart.”

Carlos’ smile turned sheepish and he shrugged his shoulders
slightly. “Yeah, I… I guess I’m smart. Book-smart, I mean. It’s… Well, I’m not
quite sure how to explain it. I just… know things that most other people don’t,
I guess? Like, the mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell. But of course,
sometimes, I don’t know something. Like if you ask me about plants, I wouldn’t
know. I’m a scientist, not a botanist. Y’know?”

“Well yeah, you may not be a botanist, but you have multiple degrees!” she said, excited. “What are they? What kind of stuff do you know?” she asked, leaning forward, her eyes bright and wide, her interest abundantly clear.

Carlos felt like blushing. “Well, my favorite degree is in
Mechanical Engineering? Like, building things and inventing things. But I also
know about Biology and Chemistry and Physics and Math… just… a lot of things.”

“Mechanical engineering? So what’s your favorite kind of stuff to build and invent?” she asked. She was almost like an excited puppy at this point, all but bouncing in her seat. She was fascinated, here to learn everything she could about this man.

Carlos blinked at her. He smiled again. “Um… well, I really
love it when I get the chance to work on robots,” he admitted. “Robotics are,
like… super incredible, you know? And there’s so much they can do already and
we’re just learning more ways to get them to help us.”

She
sat up a little and set her tea on the table. “Oh, well, uh… Work. I,
uh… I have a little online shop where I sell custom tea blends and some
other… stuff like that,” she said with a sheepish smile. “Doesn’t make a
ton of money, but it pays the bills.”

“Oh, really?” Carlos asked, interested. “That sounds pretty
fun! I honestly don’t know much about tea because I don’t drink it. But that
sounds interesting. Do you come up with the blends on your own?”

“For the most part, yeah. I mean, I do get inspiration from certain stuff. Like, I have an apple pie blend that I like, it sells pretty well. There’s some other dessert ones. I do have some others that are basically me trying to imitate other tea flavors I’ve tried, or improve upon them. Other stuff is uh, a little weird, like… colors. Not like, ‘Oh, this one is called Yellow, so all the ingredients in it are yellow,’ it’s more like, ‘This one is called Yellow, because this is how the color yellow makes me feel.’ Ya know?” She shrugged, looking down at the table, a little bit embarrassed. “That sounds silly…”

Carlos just smiled at her and shook his head. “Not really,”
he said. “I wasn’t a psychology major, but I find it very fascinating. This
reminds me of Fantasia – the original one – and the first piece they did had a
bunch of colors and images that people might see when listening to music. So… I
don’t think it’s a strange concept at all.”

“Oh,
that’s so thoughtful of you!” she grinned. “You just barely met them,
and you’re already just jumping right in to do so much to help.” She
smiled at him across the table, and took a sip of her tea. “You must
have such a kind heart…”

Carlos shrugged a little awkwardly. “Well, it was the only
way they’d let me study them,” Carlos admitted. “But they are really good – I’d
love to help them out!” He glanced at Selina’s tea and realized that he should probably get up to go order something. But he worried that it’d be a bit rude to go make his order while they already had a conversation topic to go on.

“Oh- Oh my gosh! You probably want something to drink, don’t you?” she exclaimed, having noticed his eyes flickering over her cup. “Oh, it was so rude of me not to wait, I just… I was just nervous, needed something to help calm me down, so I… I ordered before you got here…” She bit her lip, frowning. “I’m sorry… Would you like to get something?”

Carlos smiled sheepishly at her. “Yeah, I would like to,” he
said. “I just didn’t wanna be rude. I promise, I’ll be just a second – it’s
okay.”

She nodded, giving him a small wave of approval. “Yeah, no, that’s fine, take your time, take your time, it’s alright, go ahead,” she stammered. Her face was growing hot. How had she been so inconsiderate and unobservant? They came here for coffee, and she completely forgot that the entire other human entity that was accompanying her didn’t have coffee. She must have looked so rude and foolish. This just all seemed to be going so terribly… ‘Great first impression, Selina, way to go,’ she thought to herself.

Carlos’ smile grew wider and he pat the table. “I’ll be
back,” he said quickly, standing up and hurrying over to the register. He
thought he’d probably just get a standard coffee with milk – something simple
and quick.

Although she felt as if things were falling apart, she felt her heart flutter when he smiled. She couldn’t help but smile back. She leaned back in her chair, holding the tea to her chest. He was just so sweet. She really hoped something came out of this and that she could develop some sort of relationship with him. Friendship or otherwise. He seemed like a genuinely good person, and she’d be happy no matter what. So long as they left this coffee shop on speaking terms.

Carlos made his order and gave his name. He paid for it and
then came back to the table.

“Okay – that’ll just be a minute,” he assured Selina. “So…
um, what are you up to? Work or school or… what?”

“Quick, take my hand, it’s urgent!” (whispers-of-change)

Admittedly, she had shown up a little bit early. She always did that with this kind of thing. She had tried to keep herself busy beforehand, packaging up some tea blends to sell on her online store, and yes, she got through a few orders, but soon enough, she found herself too antsy. She had headed upstairs, and gotten herself dressed in a black, long-sleeved, off-the-shoulder shirt, and a soft-pink, knee-length tule skirt, paired with chunky, holographic heels. Her hair had been curled to frame her face just so, and her makeup had been applied in soft pinks and iridescent hues. She now sat at a table, foot bouncing nervously as she held on to a venti Youthberry tea. They had tea now, who knew? She knew she had gotten here early, but it seemed like so much time had passed since then. Where was he..?

Carlos parked outside and got out of the car. He almost
forgot to turn it off, but at the last moment remembered and leaned in to yank
out his keys. He sighed heavily, adjusting his labcoat, before going up to the
shop.

Carlos walked in and for a moment he forgot who he was
looking for. But upon seeing her he smiled and hurried over to her table.

“Hey, hey… sorry I’m late. I was working and I wasn’t paying
attention to the sun…”

She let out a sigh upon seeing him, not having realized she had been holding her breath. She stood as he approached, and suddenly felt slightly overdressed. Oh, she had definitely put too much thought and effort into this. “It’s fine, don’t worry about it,” she said with a reassuring smile. “I get how that can be.”

Carlos smiled at her as he sat down in the chair across from
her. He was relieved – she didn’t seem annoyed. That was good.

“How has your day, been?” he asked her.

She sat as well, hands quickly finding their way back to the cup she had been holding, an item of comfort in this entirely unfamiliar situation. “Um, not too crazy, I got some orders prepared to send out for my uh, my store, but… I haven’t been too busy. What about you? How’s your day been?”

Carlos’ smile turned a bit sheepish and he shrugged. “I’ve
been researching on what it takes to be a band manager,” he said. “The, um… the
Literal Rock Band that I discovered and am studying want to be discovered in a different way… you know? So… I’m trying
to figure out how to help with that.”
