Carlos hadn’t been to a circus in years – not since he was little. But there had been a raffle at work and Carlos had won a coupon for a free ticket. He kinda hoped that his brother and/or his dad were in town so he could invite them to go with him.

Carlos made his way to the ticket office that was set up, standing in the line with his coupon as he looked at everything around him. Some things were different than what he remembered or imagined a circus to be like, but not everything could be a dated cliche trope he supposed.

Once at the ticket office he smiled and offered the coupon. “Hey… this any good?” he asked in a joking manner.

@partyplanningforsuckers

“Oh, I went underage drinking and some things got wild!” He giggled, avoiding the true answer to the question, “It’s not important- is there another test?”

Carlos shook his head. “No, not right now,” he said. “I need to think about your situation and come up with a way to get some kind of sample from you. The most I can do is maybe skin or hair samples… urine samples too, I guess. But I’m hesitant to do anything for fear of hurting you, you know? And that stuff might not tell me very much about you, considering your… unique circumstance.”

“Ah-“ Skip finally felt that uncomfortable stage of being the wrong person for the wrong things, all he wanted was just to give out some of his blood, too bad he had forgotten he couldn’t bleed. But his bones were still thick and gurthy with marrow- couldn’t they be robbed? “Sorry about that.. I guess I forgot.. Are you gonna dismiss me now- or anything else?”

“Well, I can get cell samples from inside of your mouth to start on,” Carlos said. “Though I feel like it could be just the beginning of figuring out what’s going on with you.” Carlos then paused. “That is… if you’re okay with that.”

“Oh, yeah it’s fine.. Do you have a kit or something?” The acrobat asked as he perked up and looked over the scientist with intrigue, “Maybe I could get my date to see you- I’m pretty sure he bleeds,” He laughed gently, shaking his head with a soft smile.

“Yeah, I’ve got a kit,” Carlos said as he turned in his chair. He opened a drawer and started searching for a sterile cotton swab. “Who’s your date, by the way? Just out of curiosity?”

A hand moved to his mouth with fingers brushing his lips as he smiled over them. “Mr.— Ah, I mean Earl Harlan.. He’s a few years my senior, but I don’t mind.. He’s a sweetheart.” He paused his slight tangent and glanced up, “You know him?”

Carlos blinked. “Uh, sort of. I know of him. He was the scout master in town, right?”

@partyplanningforsuckers

He
held his hand out for the scientist to preform his strange and rather
odd tests, letting his eyes flutter over the needle before pulling them
away and sighing. “I-I didn’t think this would take so long- I kinda
have a lunch date I gotta get to soon.”

“It won’t,” Carlos said. He held the poker device to the pad of his finger. “Little poke,” he warned before hitting the button. A spring released and a small tack shot out, puncturing the skin on the finger. Carlos set the poker aside and quickly grabbed the small glass tube and held it at ready, waiting for the blood to flow.

Still there was nothing, just a small cut into the finger and a blank space of flesh where the blood should have been. No matter how hard he squeezed on it and pressed it forward, there was simply nothing. It was seeming as if Skip wasn’t an outsider, or that he was but he belonged to another universe.

Carlos just stared at the hole that was now in the other’s finger.

“Okay… well, I’m stumped,” he said. “There’s… there’s just no blood.” He looked at Skip. “Um… where are you from, exactly?”

“Red Mesa?” He prompted slowly, not exactly understanding the context of the question but choosing to answer anyway.

“Why?”

“Red Mesa, huh?” Carlos asked. “Okay, that makes some sense then. In that it doesn’t make sense, but now I know why it doesn’t make sense. It’s an anomalous town, in the same vein as Night Vale or Nulogorsk.”

It was a What?

“Wow! That’s so much clearer, now everything makes sense because apparently my town is actually two towns- or a different one of this one..” At the moment, Skip wasn’t feeling exactly himself not to mention the idea that he had switched towns without even knowing it was certainly strange. This credited his sarcastic tone.

“So no blood then?”

“No blood. Probably,” Carlos said. “And you’re misunderstanding – I just mean that your town is related to Night Vale in the same way a bull terrier is related to a sheperd dog – they’re both dogs. Different backgrounds and bloodlines, but still both dogs.” He looked at Skip with a slight frown. “So… do you remember ever bleeding in your life? From cuts or what have you?”

“Yeah.. Of course! When I was younger before I turned twenty, I’d bleed all the time but then it was my birthday and things happened when I got my Two Zero.” He explained in a perky manner, straightening his posture cheerfully as he was allowed to talk.

“Your ‘Two Zero’?” Carlos asked. “Oh, when you turned twenty? What happened then?”

Loyally,
he nodded and flipped his hand over to reveal another perfectly colored
and opaque skin, no veins had popped up over time nor did it seem like
there was any to be harvested. Most people in Night Vale usually had
something odd about them, but for someone to not have veins was..
something nearly bizarre.

“Well..?”

Carlos just poked at the skin, but he felt nothing. “I… have no idea,” he said. “I don’t see or even feel any veins. Huh… I thought that since you were an outsider this might be easier.” He looked at Skip. “I’m afraid I can’t draw blood without taking a really long needle into your heart. Though you’d have to be dead for that… and I don’t think that’s what you want, huh?” He wasn’t saying this in a mean sort of manner, just stating fact.

Skip laughed forcefully, “Haha- yeah..! I’m certainly not dead and I definitely don’t want to be dead, that would kind of end my career wouldn’t it?” Things were surely getting harder to avoid when it came to this specific testing, he only had so many excuses, and he really did want to help!

“Maybe we could.. Try anyway?” He offered as he fumbled with his hands, glancing up at the dark haired scientist.

“And give you a bunch of bruises?” Carlos asked. “Sorry, but I don’t think that’s going to happen.” He thought about it. “I can try a simple blood sugar test… that way I can also see how your blood flow is. Honestly, I’m a little worried.” Carlos reached over and removed the rubber strip. He noticed that there wasn’t any discoloration of the skin underneath. Well that was weird.

He mentally rolled his eyes, going more impatient and tense by the moment, this stuff was taking forever and all due to a roadblock or two that may have been caused by Skip? Bah. This was ridiculous! “Why don’t you just save your energy and just take the bone marrow or whatever it was, that you guys needed..”

Carlos looked at Skip. “Look, I don’t wanna cause you any uneccessary pain,” he said. “Going straight for the bone marrow at this point doesn’t seem like a good idea. But at least I can test your sugar and your white cell blood count from a finger prick. That’ll be much less painful than a bone marrow extraction, okay?” Carlos reached over to get the finger prick tool. “Have you ever had your blood sugar taken before?” he asked.

“No.. I don’t really go to the doctor’s that often, am I supposed to get it checked or something?” Skip pondered curiously, looking over what exactly Carlos was doing with great interest. “I’m sorry if I can’t help today, I really wanted to.”

“No, not unless you’re diabetic or hypo/hyperglycemic,” Carlos told him. “But it’s a test that I can run anyway since I have a reader.” Carlos got the blood sugar reader ready with a fresh test strip. Beside it was what looked like a small glass tube. “Okay, gimme your hand. This’ll be a little poke on your finger.”
