Carlos hadn’t been to a circus in years – not since he was little. But there had been a raffle at work and Carlos had won a coupon for a free ticket. He kinda hoped that his brother and/or his dad were in town so he could invite them to go with him.

Carlos made his way to the ticket office that was set up, standing in the line with his coupon as he looked at everything around him. Some things were different than what he remembered or imagined a circus to be like, but not everything could be a dated cliche trope he supposed.

Once at the ticket office he smiled and offered the coupon. “Hey… this any good?” he asked in a joking manner.

@partyplanningforsuckers

“Skip
Mariah Danby,” He sighed, embarrassment twisting the tone of his tongue
as his eyes followed the walls and his foot tapped into the air. “Why
do you need to interview me if you’re just taking stuff from my body?
Can’t you just- I don’t know.. Knock me out and take what you want?”

Carlos made a slight face at that question, but he quickly wiped it away. “Well, no… I’d really rather not do that,” he told Skip. “I need to be able to label the samples correctly and I need to know some of your physical conditions so I can keep it in mind while testing.”

He quickly typed in Skip’s name. “I’m a scientist, but definitely not the ‘mad’ variety.”

“Then maybe you’re the cute variety, I think it’s a rare species.” In the moment he believed it to be one of the cheesiest pick up lines he had come up with, it was a severe blow to his ego and he instantly regretted it. He flinched at his own words, opening his mouth to say something but finding it empty.

Fingers ran through his hair nervously as he finally stuttered out, “S-sorry..”

Carlos lifted an eyebrow at him. “Uh… are you okay?” he asked. He tried to be gentle about it, but it probably came out as sounding like he was weirded out by Skip. Which he probably was, just… not for the flirting.

“Do… do you want some water or something to eat? Just to help you feel more comfortable?”

Skip wanted to flinch back and make a sassy remark about how Carlos couldn’t even take a compliment, they weren’t in the Middle Ages. Instead he simply blushed harder now even more embarrassed, “No,” The acrobat sighed through locked teeth, “Anymore questions?” Now he just wanted to get this done and over with, what an absolute mistake getting out of bed this morning.

“Yeah, actually,” Carlos said. “Just blood type and stuff…”

He thought about it. “Would you rather do this later?” If Skip said yes, Carlos had a feeling that they’d never get to the experiment and Carlos would be out of a volunteer. But he had to ask.

“No, I’m fine. It’s B positive,” He snapped back quickly, leaning back into the chair and flickering his gaze towards the nearest window, staring at the birds who screamed and the clouds that dragged in greens and greys.

A breath left his lips, “There aren’t any other volunteers? What’s this town gonna come to? People need to learn to share,” Rolling his eyes was a kick to the wounded, “God.”

Carlos typed in the blood type. “Night Vale is full of suspicious people. They probably think I’m doing something nefarious with the samples. Or at least something gross, even though I’ve never gave them either impression ever.” He shrugged slightly. “But yeah, with how bloodstone magic is a thing, you’d think they’d be more willing to throw their blood around. Do you have any medical conditions, pre-existing or not?”

“Uhm,” Did being a bloodsucker count? “N-no, I guess not.. But yeah, people are so conservative when it comes to their blood. It’s so annoying sometimes,” Skip ranted momentarily, crossing his arms stiffly. “They get so awkward, and I’m like ‘listen dude I’m not forcing your hand, relax!’” He found himself laughing warmly, thinking back to many altercations between humans.

“Ah, I don’t know.. People can just be so uptight.”

Carlos just nodded in silent agreement. “But still… ‘volunteer’ implies agency, and I want to uphold that,” Carlos said. “Any history of medical conditions? Heart disease, diabetes, and the like?”

“Science?”
Skip hadn’t often thought about how long things usually took, he
focused more on the outcome of things even if they took years or only
weeks, the outcome was always the most important part he believed.
Science wasn’t exactly his forte, therefore he also hadn’t given it an
opportunity into his mind too much.

He tilted his head a bit and hummed curiously, “Yeah, Science I
guess..” He muttered, not knowing what exactly he was implying with his
statement, hopefully it sounded like he was agreeing. “Do you think I’ll
have to come back here a lot, if you guys find something?”

“Maybe,” Carlos said. “The testing will use up the samples and if we don’t get results immediately we might need more.” He then looked at Skip again. “What exactly…. brought you here? I was under the impression you weren’t very interested in… um, science.”

Carlos was still pretty apprehensive. Last night hadn’t left a good impression on him, in actuality.

“Like I said,” Began Skip once more looking over to The scientist with a slight roll of his eyes, “I feel bad for people that have these problems- there’s not a lot I can do about it except give up my body to science! I want to help, but donations only do so much.. Plus, I’m not exactly the richest cat in town.” He sighed, feeling absentmindedly at his empty pockets.

“I’m not that into science, but I figured that when I saw the slip that I could help for once..”

“Huh. Well okay.” That was understandable, Carlos supposed. He still wasn’t sure about working with Skip, but time would tell how it went. “Any help we can get with this would be great. Though results could be a long-time coming, we’ll at least be setting out steppingstones for other researchers who could find the breakthrough. Here… go ahead and sit in that chair and we’ll talk first before we start pulling blood and hair samples, sound good?”

Skip nodded in a chipper manner, his body shifting into the seat like he had been stabbed in the stomach and a metal pole was struck down his spine, he moved like lightning. “Will it hurt?”

Will it hurt? This man hunted people and he was worried about the pain.

Carlos sat down in an adjacent stool next to a desk. He picked up the ipad sitting on it and turned it on to start taking notes.

“Well, yeah, some of it will,” he admitted. “I’ll warn you though, and I’ll tell you how much it should. I’ll be very careful. I got my PA degree in high school, so I know a bit about what I”m doing.” Between robotics club, some other college-level classes, and the occasional magic adventures on a school bus, he managed it.

The acrobat wanted to scoff at Carlos’ vague boasting, but he couldn’t help but swoon over how intelligent the man must have been, he really was quite impressed. His face showed the impression, heating up a soft rose color to his pointed ears and nose. “Ah.. I would hope so, you are the scientist.”

Fiddling his hands into his lap as he crossed his legs, his jeans tightening with the strain and his heeled boots briefly clicking together, as he glanced away and bit his lip. “I didn’t think I’d see you here either.. I knew you were a scientist clearly, but I just.. Forgot there was only one place to work.”

“Yeah…” Carlos said. “The city tends to think we’re comedians. And I mean… sure! But our work is very serious too. It’s just something most folks here don’t understand. I guess I shouldn’t be surprised that it would be an outsider who volunteered for this course.”

Carlos took a breath. “Anyway… so, let’s start the pre-interview.” He pulled up a form on his ipad. “So… name?”

Though
it was during this job that he began getting hurried alerts from his
phone that nearly seemed to be blowing up from the messages, as the
screen lit up each time over it would be something from the lab. As the
texts got clearer they stated something about an eager volunteer to have
blood and bone marrow extracted for cancer combatants, being that this
was a citizen of Night Vale it was worth a shot.

Right?

Practice wrapped up and Carlos went to work getting ready to take samples from any volunteer that showed up. He didn’t really think anyone would show up though – Night Valiens were pretty attached to their blood, to put it mildly. But there was no harm in asking so Carlos was ready, just in case.

There was one volunteer. It was the last person you would think would want to donate anything from their body.

Skip.

He stood in the main lobby awkwardly with his hands behind his back, and his clothes baggy and makeup looking like someone had smeared glitter over his eyes. Basically, a randomly thrown together version of himself. His dark hair was brushed neatly, and his eyes were bright with interest as he wandered around the lobby.

Jake the Scientist let Carlos know that there was someone there for them. Carlos was honestly surprised, but pleasantly so. He put on a smile and went to see their volunteer.

However, seeing who it was stopped him at the door. He was so confused.

“Skip… right?” he asked as he finally started to approach.

The acrobat painted on a smile cheerfully and nodded in an eager manner, “Yep!” He beamed warmly as he straightened his posture up from his slouched position in expection at the lobby. “I’ve never been in a place like this, but I wasn’t really expecting it to be like this.. “

“Uh… well, labs come in all different shapes – every one of them equally scientific,” Carlos replied, offering a slight smile. “Um… I’m honestly a little surprised to see you here,” he admitted.

“Well,” He began as his dark eyes swept away from the walls and instead towards the scientist, a soft smile spreading like butter onto his pinkish lips, “I’ve always felt really pretty bad for people who have these horrible diseases, but since I’m not super smart and educated, I figured I’d use my body! Like I do with everything!” He cheered as he perked up and clasped his hands in front of himself.

Like he did… with everything? Carlos tried not to scrunch his nose at the implications of that.

“That’s
very… altruistic of you,” he said. “Um… well, let me show you where
we’ll be performing the procedure. It’s just in the main lab over here
– I’ve got a little station set up and ready.”

Of course Skip followed close behind, dragging his feet in a tired and seemingly injured manner as if the arches of his feet ached. It wouldn’t have been a surprise, but that would reveal for Skip’s poor self care.

His walk was brisk and eager, watching the walls as they moved down with a faint smirk. “What exactly is this again? Like a uh.. Body sampler, for you guys?”

Carlos glanced at him. “Well, we’d like to get a bunch of different sort of samples from you. But only what you’re comfortable with giving – I know some things might just be too far for your comfort. I’m hoping to be able to unlock cures within someone’s own genetic code. It might take a long time, but you know… science.”
