Stephen
followed the instructions and sat back, tuning into the radio station
to hear the results of his quick improvisions. Hopefully it did not make
anything implode and if they knew what they were doing, which he hoped
they were, everything would run smoothly and he could simply leave.

But something called to him, something peculiar. It was beyond the
walls of the lab almost like whispers or some oddity that had yet to be
explained. As Cecil declare the Strange Doctor’s findings and as it
played, he spaced out as if he was in the trance again, taking no notice
of Carlos’s movements and emotions.

Carlos watched Stephen for a moment, but then decided to watch the Bamfs. They seemed to be getting curious and had spread out to explore his apartment. He… should probably occupy them while they’re here.

“Um, hey… you guys hungry? You guys wanna watch Netflix?” He started for his TV and, curious, some of the little blue imps followed him.

“How many people actually listen to the show? If it’s everyone then do so!” That idea made him jump off the floor. “Anything is possible in this town!” The sorcerer cackled like a mad scientist, maybe the bloodstone magic was getting to his head.

“Carlos I could not thank you more than enough for this help! Whatever I can do for you after this event is over with, you and Cecil are in my debt!” After the high of magic, Stephen’s face sheened with a smile so wide that it almost seemed to be sparkling. “Nightvale…this town…everyone in it…I feel their souls and everything. It’s beautiful, I think I want to stay for a bit longer…”

Carlos looked at Stephen a little bit confused and scared. “You… seem to have gotten the hang of things here,” he said, forcing a laugh. He texted the instructions to Cecil, hoping that as many Night Vale citizens as possible were listening to their radios.

“Alright, message sent. Let’s switch on the radio and turn up the volume.”

“Tell everyone to concentrate their bloodstone and perform this chant!” Stephen blinked suddenly. He hadn’t written it down and couldn’t! Oh this was a travesty. Not even his keyboard could perform Norse runes. “Um, wait!” The sorcerer recorded the chant on his phone and sent it to Carlos. “Start by sending Cecil this as a means to get the bamfs out of Hell, then maybe we can test other words that would hurt the red demons! If we combine bloodstone magic with my sorcery, I could defend this entire town in a most unique way. Why, if the town accepts me I could protect it from New York in my Sanctum with a bloodstone….oh the possibilities are endless….” He paced back and forth and contemplated on the complexities of combining his powers with that of Nightvale’s.

Carlos’ phone chimed when it recieved the message. However, the chime wasn’t the one he had as a default – the sound that came out of his phone was a low mystical thrum that gave him shivers up from his toes and up his spine. He shuddered, but then forwarded the sound file to Cecil along with the instructions that he’d been given.

“Maybe Cecil could play it over the air… do you think that would work? Would… would it activate the bloodstones within proximity if someone was for some reason unable to chant? Like, if they had a monster attacking them for instance.”

“I
will be right back in a second! Not sure what side it will be a second
will be on… But it will be a second!” A hole appeared in the wall and
without hesitatiion, Stephen lunged into it. Just as he said, he came
back through a portal on the ceiling and covered in BAMFs. “I did it! I
made a portal to Hell! I can do this!” He lunged his fists in the air
with a low laugh and a smile. “This will be easy!”

“Jesus!” Carlos yelped, clinging onto the Bamf. “I – instantaneous! Was that supposed to happen?? Wha –”

The Bamf in his arms squee’d and started wriggling before suddenly poofing with a smell of brimstone out of Carlos’ hands and onto the pile covering Stephen.

The sorcerer laughed at the sheer joy that the bamfs were giving off. “Yes, yes it was. Time is fast in Hell. A few seconds here is that of minutes there. But I have harnessed the bloodstone magic! I can help Nightvale! And I can fight Azazel myself or whatever demon is behind this.” He started to pull the bamfs off him one by one. “I’m not sure how to stop the red demons, but can you tell your radio friend that I will get your problem fixed? And I will need some help especially finding out what the weakness of the enemy is? It would be much appreciated. Or you can science it! That would rule out a lot of things!”

“Uh… um – yeah, sure, I can science it – absolutely,” Carlos said. This was weird, but he was trying to catch up. “Alright, what do I need to do, do you think? Where would you like me to start? Oh – I should text Cecil before I forget.” He took out his phone and unlocked it to start typing out a message about the developments Strange just told him.

“Apps.” He shivered in disgust that this town had evolved to the latest technology. It was horrid that he would have to resort to using a …a smartphone. The feeling dissipated as Carlos went on about Nightcrawler. “Oh, they’re the same person Kurt Wagner is Nightcrawler….you know like a superhero with a secret identity. I’m a superhero you know. Just probably one of the few with no secret identity.” He sighed at that with slight regret that he did not come up with an alias at some point during his career. Something cool like….The Wiz….yeah…that sound hip right? Stephen followed the scientist into the room and looked around. “Yes, this should be big enough. 3 feet in diameter is the perfect size for a circle.”

Carlos went to the small alter he had in his apartment and
gathered up the bloodstones that were arranged in a sort of semi-circle. He
carried them back for the Doctor. “Where do you want to do this? In the middle of
the floor? If so, do it on the tile – I’d rather not try to get burn marks out
of the carpet.” He looked at the little Bamf and smiled kindly at it.

“Yes, that is the best spot.” Stephen took the rest of the bloodstones to complete the circle. “The tile is better for me as well because….” A chalkboard filled with science was on the wall which he grabbed a piece of chalk and began to draw a circle that showed similarity to a mandala on the floor. “…of this.” The doctor put the bamf on Carlos’s shoulders and stepped in the circle and downloaded the bloodstone app as a basic guide. Once open, he thumbed through trying to find a chant to what he needed and hummed on how he could mix it with his own magic, that is if the bloodstones would even like that. “Microwaves….sacrifices
…ah! Dimensional travel…”

Carlos grinned at the critter and reached up to gently
scratch at the fur on its chest. “Hello there – oh, you’re so cute,” he cooed.
He looked at the circle on the floor and whistled lowly. “How alchemic,” he
commented. “And you just did that all free-hand… that’s amazing! The most I can
do is conceptual drafting, and even then I have to spend a lot of time on it.”

“I do this quite often, it’s the only one I could remember
off the top of my head.” Stephen started writing something about two meters
away from the circle. It was a mix of Norse, Atlantian, and a mix of the
Bloodstone magic. The spell had to be just right to get the portal in the right
place or they would end up halfway across the universe with a giant beast that
would eat them in an instant.

He began to utter the spell under his breath and the circle
began to glow red, blue, and yellow, a mix of all the magic rushing through
him. Stephen could feel the energy of Nightvale in his veins. It was the
deepest purple that ever existed in the night sky. “Aaa-ah! Carlos! I’m going
to jump in the portal and don’t come after me! Do you got that?!”

Carlos watched in awe as everything lit up. The Bamf crawled into his arms and Carlos held onto it protectively as he watched Stephen work.

“Wait, what? You don’t want me to come? Where are you going?” he asked the sorcerer. He just got here! Why was he leaving?

“Yes, I know, it probably has its good side, but now we need to keep it from getting engulfed in the flames of Hell.” Stephen was still aggressively searching for more bloodstones until Carlos mentioned his stash. “Yes, please. I need to learn how to understand this magic quick before Azazel actually shows up, discovering this source of power and using it for his own good!” The small bamf shivered when he mentioned the demon. “Don’t worry, we will prevent that from happening, even if it means getting stuck in Nightvale for some time before I can make it back to the Sanctum.” His mind was so focused on stopping that red monster from destroying this place.

Carlos smiled slightly at the other man and gestured for him to follow. “Should we work on finding the rest of the Bamfs and getting them to safety?” he asked. “I can put in a call to the radio station and let them know that they’re benign, so people can start helping them.”

He unlocked the door that led to a staircase that went straight up from them. He started up the stairs, expecting Dr Strange to follow him with the Bamf.

“Actually….” He stopped for a moment to ponder the request. “yes, that would be a brilliant idea. The more bamfs we save, the better.” Stephen once again started thinking, now needing to know the mechanics of what he was actually doing because in truth, he had no idea. “Is there a book on bloodstone chants that I can resource back to lying around? It would be of some assistance…”

The bamf started cooing in his ear again which he turned to instantly. “If I could only understand you. It would be helpful only if my magic worked or Nightcrawler was here, but this will have to do. I can only assume that you know something I don’t, which seems to be the scenario for everyone I meet in this town. No offense, Carlos. It’s just all so…strange, just like me. And I just got here, so I’m trying to make sense of it all while attempting to help you with what knowledge I have.”

“Well, I don’t have a book,” Carlos told him. “Books are
dangerous – I don’t know if you noticed the chains on my bookshelf down in the
lab. But there is a phone app for
bloodstone rituals – I’ll go ahead and show it to you upstairs.”

They reached the top of the steps and Carlos pushed open the
door. “So, who’s Nightcrawler? I thought we were talking about a Kurt Wagner
before…”
