“I haven’t given the bloodstone magic respect?” It was considered black magic in his practice, but desperare times called for desperate measures. The doctor said a silent prayer to his gods, the Vishanti, and rose. “I need at least 5 bloodstones for this to work.” Stephen began to search the lab for some bloodstones that were on hand. “If you say so Carlos, you are the scientist and expert of this town. Whatever illogical methods this place goes by, I have to follow them to survive. At this point I have no other options other than to go MacGyver on this situation.” His voice carried with the opening and closing of drawers and cabinets.

Carlos just watched Dr Strange with mild confusion as he
searched around. The little bamf on his shoulder was clinging to his head to
stay in place. It cooed and waved at Carlos, giving a wide, toothy grin. Carlos
felt compelled to just smile and wave back at the cute little creature.

“Well, I’m not sure if it’s so much about ‘MacGyver-ing’
anything, but more about that using magical doorways already in place,” Carlos
started to explain. “As far as I know, MacGyver was an inventive spy, not a
magician. The town of Night Vale has something going on in it – and not just
the weird portals, though those happen quite often.  But I mean something deeper – deep, powerful,
and ancient. Possibly Eldritch, though not as well-known as, say, Dagon or Cthulhu.”

“I used MacGyver as a verb. You know. Take objects that are around you and make them useful for the problem you are facing. When I had no artifacts at my disposal once to keep things in control I took a bat, wrapped in barbed wire and focused my energy through that.” he let out a small ‘aha’ as he came across a bloodstone. “You know if you have confirmed what you are saying, you just opened me a nice can of worms. This whole town…is definitely strange. One of the strangest phenomenons I have ever encountered through the millennia I have been serving as Sorcerer Supreme. It is either doomed to this strange Hell that has embedded it for so long, or I was called to bring some order to this place because we all know about the laws of entropy and such. I took basic physical science in school. I was a neurosurgeon, actually….” Stephen’s thought was cut short as he head disappeared under a sink.

“It would be hilarious if I had a tome just sitting in my library about this town or the Eldritch sorcery surrounding this area….oh if that is true, I would eat my shoe, I tell you. Could have made this a lot easier…” From out of a portal that just so happened to be in the oddest of places, he pulled out another bloodstone.

Carlos lifted an eyebrow at him. “Dooming Night Vale? Or
bringing order?” he asked. “Well… I don’t know about order. Order probably
doesn’t really exist anywhere. I’ve been working here to find out just what’s
going on here… and I’m not really any closer. But… Night Vale is full of some
good people. People who put down a corporation trying to take over the town,
because they like how things are here. “ He smiled. “Maybe if you get to know
the town a bit better you’d learn to appreciate it.”

Carlos looked at the bloodstone, and then nodded his head
toward a door. “I’ve got my personal stones upstairs in my apartment, if you
want to borrow them as well.”

“He indeed can teleport exactly like them.” he got up and thought about it. “My guess is that Azazel was trying to invade the bamfs’ dimension yet again, and somehow the portal ended up here….but how did the bamfs get here….maybe escape….that’s it!” Stephen’s hand slapped on the table. “The bamfs were evacuating their dimension through the portal that led here to Nightvale and Azael, he’s another demon, found their route and sent his minions here! We need to protect these creatures and get the portal sealed! This would be easier said than done…if I had my magic.” He held his hands up with a sad face. “Due to the…whatever is around Nightvale, my mystical powers are useless.”

“Find Wagner, protect the bamfs, and seal the portal,”
Carlos said. “Okay. Sounds good.” He frowned slightly. “I’m sorry about your
powers… like I said, the magic that’s allowed here is the Bloodstone magic used
for daily tasks.” He thought a second. “Maybe it’s because you haven’t chanted
over the Bloodstones – something might be hindering your magic here because you
haven’t given it the mandated respect.”

“Wait, meme-speaking?” Stephen raised an eyebrow at that. All he heard was coos and clicks like a small infant animal trying to communicate for the first time. Bamf? Like…..Nightcrawler bamf? Were these…..actual bamfs?“

“No…these creatures are harmless. I know their well….father if it seems to be that way…” Stephen held out his hand with a smile. “They’re well….they’re demons. Demonic in nature but completely harmless. Mischievous more than anything…we call them bamfs because that is the sound they make when they teleport. Yes….they teleport. And to be very accurate, yes they are from Hell. Wonder how they populated so fast and got here in the first place. Tell me…have you come across a man by the name of Kurt Wagner? He well…he looks like that.” he pointed to the blue fuzzball. “but he is human size and has a German accent. He’s also a Catholic priest so don’t let that throw you off.”

Carlos looked at him. “I haven’t been around to hear the noise
they make when teleporting – I’ve just heard second-hand accounts. So, wait,
they’re not saying ‘BAMF’ as in ‘Bad-Ass Mother…’ um, ‘F-word’?” he asked Dr
Strange. “And… no, I haven’t seen a big one. Just a few of the little ones
around here.” He considered the creature. “Teleporting… it might explain how
they got here. Perhaps there was a shift in space while they were teleporting
and they just ended up here. But then those monsters that came in after them…”
How did they get there? Could they teleport too?

Carlos gestured toward the creature. “Can you pick it up? I
don’t want it getting hurt on the equipment it broke.”

“No, not…that bamf. It’s the sound the air makes when they teleport. You would have to see it.” Stephen cooed the bamf to his side once again who happily crawled up to his shoulder.

“So the red ones look like this as well?” He pointed to his new companion. “If so, I have your answer as to why they are here. And I just MIGHT be able to help you if you help me find Mr. Wagner, we can stop the red ones from attacking Nightvale.Like I said, it’s complicated matters that I know of some knowledge, but I need well…they have claimed Kurt is their daddy, so that’s why we need to find him.”

“I… no, you saw one of the monsters,” Carlos told him. “It
didn’t look like the Bamf. It was just some big ugly… reptilian beast. But if
they’re from the same plane… maybe they’re getting help getting here from something
that CAN teleport?” Carlos thought about this ‘Wagner’ fellow. “I haven’t seen
him, and there aren’t any reports I’ve heard. But… can he teleport like these
creatures? If so, then maybe the space shift had affected him as well… and we’ll
see him shortly if he’s not already here. If we’re lucky.”

“Me?
The radio host?” He shook his head as he was already looking for a
makeshift weapon to protect himself from the crash. Digging through the
drawers he found a long titration pipette which he smack on the table to
break. “I owe you on this.” The pipette had now turned into something
that could puncture human skin. “Don’t know how much but I owe you
something.”

Carlos looked at the broken instrument in mild horror, but
he said nothing as he grabbed a nearby stool and held it out in front of him,
the legs pointed out. There was a small shuffling noise as something moved on
the floor, shifting glass from the broken item, as well as a small,
high-pitched mumbling.

It wasn’t coming out at them, which was a very good sign.
Carlos started to slowly move toward the sounds, hoping there wasn’t anything
too nasty there.

The creature seemed harmless, so Stephen put his guard down. “I’m taking this is one of the imps you were talking about that are the not so deadly kind?” He was hardly phased by the creature, bit knew it was fine because it ignored him and was focused on the glass on the floor for some reason. “Well, I am impressed. There is a racial war happening through two dimensions. Or genocide. Something involving evolutionary things.” The pipette was set on the table in the meantime so the strange man could study the tiny being.

Carlos peered around the table and immediately relaxed
seeing the little blue creature. “Oh, thank goodness,” he said and gently set
the stool back down on the ground. “Yes, this is the meme-speaking critter I
was talking about.”

The little creature turned its furry head and looked at them
with wide, golden eyes. “Bamf?” it
asked and it grinned at them with tiny sharp, white teeth. Behind it its little
arrow-head tail curled and wagged at them.

“Is it hurt?” Carlos asked Dr Strange as he got closer.

“Oh, I’m fine, nothing that I can walk off…” He performed a quick visual to see if he actually was struck he cause he needed medical attention. His magic wasn’t going to help him out of this one. Hopefully the beasts…imps…monsters? couldn’t get into the lab by sheer force. From what it seemed they would be in here for quite a while until those things went away.

They were in a lab. Clean, white tiles and clean white walls
with long metal tables arranged in rows. There were cabinets and a couple sinks
in the room, as well as various instruments and random items on the tables. For
some reason, next to the decontamination shower sat a bookcase that was locked
up in bullet-proof glass and chains.

Carlos looked the other man over, a little worriedly. “You
sure?” he asked. He then sighed, relieved and somewhat satisfied with the man’s
answer. “Good… it’s very good to hear.” He looked at Stephen with a frown. “So…
you’ve seen them. What do you think?” he asked.

“Well, it has been seen before by me, but nothing like that you know what I mean?” Stephen placed his hands on his hips and bent over slightly to catch his breath. “I really did thought you were messing around for a moment, but this town…oh this town is filled with so much….strangeness that I feel like there are things that I must know to help you comprehend this madness….and I have seen madness….madness? This is Nightvale, a brand new test for the great Doctor Strange.”

Carlos just listened to him as he spoke. He then laughed
softly. “You sound a little like Cecil, the way you talk,” he said. “Getting
all narrative and mysterious…” He chuckled again, and it gave way to a sigh as
he was still trying to catch his breath. “Okay… okay, now what? How can I help?”

Carlos jumped slightly when he heard a crash somewhere in
the lab.

He thought Carlos was kidding.

Stephen thought he was seeing things.

But the thud on the car window made him believe otherwise.

It was a mere instinct reaction to jump out of the car and make a sword appear, or  a spell, or anything to fight it.

But nothing happened, and he was baffled, then frightened. With quick
wits, he grappled the monster off of the hood. and against the wall of
Big Rico’s Pizza. “Hoary Hosts of Hoggoth!” The strange man exclaimed as
he was now performing Tai Chi to ward the monster away since
apparently, his own magic had no effect in the town of Nightvale. He had
to play by their rules to survive and use their magical power to
thrive.

“CARLOS! GET INSIDE! YOU CAN’T FIGHT THIS!” He punched the monster in
the face to try to knock him out cold before getting inside behind the
scientist.

Carlos had managed to yank his keys out of the car as he ran
to the door and got it open. He shut and locked the door behind them, jumping
in shock from the scratching and snarling he heard once it was closed.

“God damn!” he gasped. “Dammit… it came out of nowhere.” He
looked at the Doctor. “Are you alright? Are you hurt anywhere?”
