“This?
I’ve had it since Earl and I were scouts. I was surprised I still fit
it and since you were near a camp I thought it would fit the theme!”
Cecil smiled. It still had his patches from back in the day sewn on,
some sewn on better as he clearly progressed his skills.

‘Fit’ in Cecil’s opinion was probably different from Carlos’. He was pretty sure young men weren’t supposed to flash their midsections when they stretched. But it looked good on Cecil – tight, but… good.

Carlos smiled at him. “Yes, it certainly fills the theme,” he responded. “Too bad I don’t have anything – I never was in scouts. Not enough robots for me, heh.”

“Sure!
Just tell me what to do,” he says, looking around for the labelling
supplies. The thought of using writing utensils was weird, this wasn’t
Night Vale.

Carlos went to a box and searched inside it for a bit before pulling out some bags and tiny plastic tupperware. He also took a labeling gun and offered it to Cecil. “Here. There’s some blank labels on my table right there as well as a marker.” He pointed to indicate where the items were. “We use the label gun to mark the place. The labels hand-done in marker are for the dates.”

Cecil grabbed the supplies and went back over to Carlos and set it up so it would be easier for them to leave. He just waited for Carlos to instruct him what to write and what to label them with.

Carlos offered Cecil to sit in his chair and started to point things out. “So these tags I wrote beforehand while collecting, we just transcribe this part into the label gun.” He did one for Cecil for a piece of pumice he found in a river bed. He stuck the label that said “PUMICE – RIVER BED .23KM” onto the top of the Tupperware container. “Then we take one of the blank labels from the sheet and write down the date. The date isn’t as important, which is why I don’t print it from the label gun.

“That sounds easy enough,” he said with a small smile, before getting to work labelling what Carlos gave him. Cecil found it almost relaxing just sitting here and labelling things with Carlos. Perhaps it was just being together again after a long separation, and not having to worry constantly about Night Vale, even if it did way heavy in the back of his mind.

Carlos was just happy to have Cecil with him while they worked. He read out tags he’d made earlier in the day for the labels and sealed the sample containers with a bright and scientific smile on his face.

At one point he leaned in to smooch Cecil on the top of his head.

Cecil was slowly finishing up what he had been given when he felt the kiss on the top of his head. His face flushed a light purple as a small grin crept across his face. If they had been in Night Vale, no doubt his markings would be wriggling around as well. Once Cecil was done, he pressed a small chaste kiss to Carlos’ cheek.

Carlos grinned as they finished up with the samples.

“And with that… we’re done. Good job, Ceec. Thanks so much for helping me!”

“I was glad to help Carlos!” He said, enjoying the presence of his scientist.

Cecil stretched a bit after sitting, his shirt riding up further.

Carlos’ eyes were drawn to the little bit of skin that showed. “When did you get that outfit, by the way?” he asked.

Cecil
didn’t remember exactly how he got here, as was often the case when
traveling outside of Night Vale. Although he did remember passing a camp
on his way to Carlos.

“Probably,” he said with a smile, “but tell me what you found out!”

“Well, Sleepy Peak Peak is an extinct volcano,” Carlos started to explain. “I had heard that before coming here – and it’s name implies as much as compared to its old name, Wide Awake Peak Peak – but I’ve now confirmed it.”

He sat there and listened to Carlos, enthralled by what he had to say even if he didn’t quite understand the difference. Did he mean that the fire being within the volcano was dead and therefore the ‘mountain’ was safe? Cecil nodded along as he listened to the explanation.

“But there’s still so much to learn about the volcano – I’ve collected more samples than I can even count! There is still so much to learn, and it’ll be so rewarding!”

“So you are planning on staying here longer?” Cecil asked. He looked around the makeshift lab. “Have you met anyone while you were here?” He was interested in the volcano sure, but he was interested in what Carlos was up to other than that as well.

“Well, I did want to talk to you about that,” Carlos said. “Staying here, I mean. Because I want to, but I wanted to ask you if you’d be okay with it.” He then smiled. “There’s a camp nearby… with children. I met some of them, but usually I just leave them to their activities.”

“Staying here by yourself or… together?” Cecil asks almost hesitantly. His home was Night Vale but his home was also Carlos.

“I remembered you mentioning a camp! That’s why I wore this!” Cecil said excitedly, showing off his old Scouts Uniform. His earlier question still weighing on his mind as to what Carlos would say.

“Well, I wasn’t sure you were that you’d wanted to come,” Carlos said. “But I’m glad you’re here! I really am!” Carlos smiled widely at Cecil.

“I would gladly be with you wherever whenever.” Cecil said, his tone a bit serious before slipping back into a happier one. “Here I am! So.. are you going to introduce me to your camper friends?” Cecil asked, expecting him to have spoken to Councillors or someone like Earl.

“Well sure, I can introduce you,” Carlos said with a smile. “The kids at Camp Campbell have a couple great counselors who I’m sure you would love to meet! David’s a delight and Gwen’s really good with the kids.”

Cecil was skeptical of those who lived outside of Night Vale, but since Carlos seemed to like these people the least he could do was give them a try. It’s not like they could be like Kevin or god forbid Steve.

“That sounds wonderful Carlos! I’m excited,” he said, even if truthfully he was a bit nervous. He was the interloper here and it had been a while since he had been outside of Night Vale.

‘In the meantime, do you want to help me label the samples I have?” Carlos asked. “We’re allowed to use writing utensils out here so it’ll be easier than usual.”
