“Exactly.” He repeated, and nodded with a smile to Carlos.

That took Carlos by surprise and, unable to stop it, a laugh escaped him.

“Is everyone done eating?” Edwardo asked.

“I am,” Mikey said, already gathering up his dishes to wheel over to the basin for washing.

“I am as well, thank you.” Newt said with a smile. “I can help with the dishes, it’s the least I can do for you feeding me.”

“That’s not necessary, Newt – you’re a guest,” Edwardo told him with a smile.

With Mikey’s hands full, his chair rolled away from the table and he put his dishes in the basin. Carlos pulled out his wand to cast some preservation charms over the leftover food. He then had the dishes covered and levitated over to the icebox.

Newt smiled softly, watching as Mikey carried off the dishes – finally noticing the chair moving on its own and watching in fascination.

Newt
smiled softly, watching as Mikey carried off the dishes – finally
noticing the chair moving on its own and watching in fascination.

Carlos cleaned off some stains from the table cloth and vanished any crumbs left behind. Edwardo started to stand up.

Papi,
siéntate,” Carlos told him. “We’ve got it.”

Edwardo chuckled. “You boys never let me do anything anymore.”

“Damn right, Pops,” Mikey said as he started to wash his dishes. “Carlos – send over the other dishes so I can clean them.”

“Sure, sure,” Carlos said and he pointed to his dishes with a slight smirk. “Scourgify,” he whispered as he drew the wand in an ‘s’ shape. One by one the dishes he charmed were cleaned. Only then did he start sending the dishes over to Mikey, which earned him an indignant squawk and a loud “CARLOS!”

“Much
more the former than the latter.” Newt replied. “Both he and his
fiancée are involved with the ministry, so they tend to stay there.”

“Ah, I see,” Edwardo said. “I suppose devotion to one’s work runs in your family, doesn’t it?” He smiled kindly at Newt.

Newt smiled softly, and nodded a little. “It’s true.” He replied. “That seems to be the Scamander lifestyle.”

“It’s in the Carlos lifestyle too,” Mikey chimed. “You should see that guy when he’s working on a new invention – you can’t get him out of his room for anything short of a fire!”

Edwardo chuckled. “Sometimes, he’s the one who causes the fires…” he added softly.

Newt chuckled quietly, and smiled at Carlos as his family spoke. “It’s good to be dedicated to your work.” He said to him.

“Exactly,” Carlos said with a nod. But he was grinning. “If anything is worth doing, you ought to do it well.”

“I suppose it does.” He nodded, smiling in return. “My mum must have passed that onto us. My father was a hard working man as well.”

“What does your father do?” Edwardo asked, leaning forward in his seat with an elbow on the table in interest.

Carlos wondered mildly if Edwardo was going to poke Newt for every bit of information about himself. He didn’t look like he was in any hurry to stop, so Carlos decided to do a little clean-up. He slid his wand from his sleeve and flicked it toward some of the dishes on the stove to move them to the sink. Just for the fun of it though he also charmed a napkin near his brother to come up and dab at some of the crumbs that stuck in the younger man’s mustache.

Mikey jumped, a little surprised, and stared at his brother with an almost offended pout, to which Carlos just smirked cheekily.

“He was an auror as well.” Newt replied with a soft smile.

He watched as the dishes began to float away, though he chuckled as he caught sight of Mikey’s reaction to the floating napkin.

“I see,” Edwardo said. “Well, if you don’t mind me saying, it seems that you’re not the only one in your family to lead an exciting life.”

Newt smiled happily, and nodded. “You and my mother would get along very well.” He said with a chuckle.

Edwardo looked at Newt curiously. He smiled. “Oh? She sounds lovely already. If you don’t mind me asking, Newt, what’s your family like?”

The young man’s eyes lit up at the mention of his family. “My mother raises hippogriffs. She lives out in the country outside London.” He said. “She’s part of the reason I became so interested in magical creatures, I suppose.” He added. “My brother, Theseus, is an auror. Quite an accomplished one, in fact.” He said, pride clear on his face. “We don’t always get along, but I suppose that’s common among brothers.”

Carlos’ eyebrows furrowed curiously. “An auror?” If Newt told him about Carlos’ family…

No, he wouldn’t do that. But the mention of an auror did put a pang of concern in Carlos’ gut. Just a little one.

“Yeah, brothers are sometimes like that,” Mikey said. “How close are you? Regarding age? Carlos and I are only about 18 months apart.”

“Theseus is eight years older than me.” He replied with a small smile. “Doesn’t seem like it, though.” He added. “The gap between us never felt that large.”

“Oh yeah?” Carlos asked. “Well, that’s always a good thing. Does he travel a lot like you, or is he kept busy in England?”

“He rarely leaves England.” Newt replied. “He’s quite incolved with the Ministry.” He explained.

“Oh – an all work and no play type?” Edwardo asked curiously. “Or is it just the nature of being an auror in England?”
