Newt smiled happily, and nodded. “You and my mother would get along very well.” He said with a chuckle.

Edwardo looked at Newt curiously. He smiled. “Oh? She sounds lovely already. If you don’t mind me asking, Newt, what’s your family like?”

The young man’s eyes lit up at the mention of his family. “My mother raises hippogriffs. She lives out in the country outside London.” He said. “She’s part of the reason I became so interested in magical creatures, I suppose.” He added. “My brother, Theseus, is an auror. Quite an accomplished one, in fact.” He said, pride clear on his face. “We don’t always get along, but I suppose that’s common among brothers.”

Carlos’ eyebrows furrowed curiously. “An auror?” If Newt told him about Carlos’ family…

No, he wouldn’t do that. But the mention of an auror did put a pang of concern in Carlos’ gut. Just a little one.

“Yeah, brothers are sometimes like that,” Mikey said. “How close are you? Regarding age? Carlos and I are only about 18 months apart.”

Newt gratefully accepted the conchas, and smiled warmly at the man. “Thank you.” He said, and began to nibble on it as well. “These are incredible, Edwardo.” He complimented.

“Thank you very much, Newt,” Edwardo said with a beaming grin. “If you want some more to take with you, you let me know, alright?”

“He’s getting to the Abuelito stage of his life,” Carlos whispered to Newt with a slight smirk. “He’s going to make sure you have more than enough food to eat while you’re here and when you go.”

Newt smiled gratefully at the offer, and took another bite. He tilted his head at the comment, and smiled. “Abuelito?” He asked quietly. “What’s that?” He asked.

“It means ‘little old man’,” Carlos told him. “It happens to old Hispanic people who do nothing but cook all day.”

“I can hear you, Carlito,” Edwardo said suddenly with a teasing smile to his son. “I may be old, but not old enough for my hearing to go quite yet.”

Carlos just smiled innocently at his father.

Newt smiled, and looked down with a silent chuckle. “It’s a good trait.” He said, looking to Edwardo. “It will make many people happy.” He added.

“And I like making people happy,” Edwardo agreed. “One of the surest ways to make others’ happy is through their stomach. And cooking for two boys certainly gave me a lot of practice.”

Newt smiled, and nodded a little as well. “Thank you.” He said again. “I really appreciate this.”

“Of course, Newt,” Mr Ramon told him with a smile. He looked down at his desert and gently tore off a piece from the pastry. “We appreciate you being here. Carlos doesn’t have very many wizard friends, you know.”

Newt contently continued to nibble on his own pastry, and he smiled softly. “It’s my pleasure, Mr. Ramon.” He replied both politely and honestly.

Carlos’ father just smiled at him. “You can call me Edwardo if you’d
like.” He chuckled. “Are all young British wizards so polite, or is it just
you?”

Mikey snorted softly. “Pops, you’re going all ‘wistful old man’ on us.”

Carlos blinked at him, but then his lips cracked into a wide grin. “O-okay. Swell. That would be great. Thank you, Newt. I’ll try not to get in the way.”

“You don’t need to worry about that.” He said with a smile, shaking his head. “You won’t get in the way, Carlos. Actually, it’ll probably help to have you there.”

Carlos nodded. “I hope so,” he said, still smiling. “When do you think you’ll be heading out, Newt?”

“I’m thinking tomorrow, hopefully. I can help you all repairing the house, but I must admit I’m pretty excited to see him.”

“I’m sure you are,” Carlos said with a grin.

“You’re welcome to stay here until you’re ready for the expedition,” Mr Ramon told Newt with a smile.

“Yeah,” Carlos said. “I’ll have my room set up and cleaned after dessert.”

Newt blinked in surprise at the offer, and looked between Carlos and his father. “Are you sure?” He asked. “I wouldn’t want to be a bother…”

Carlos just grinned at him. “Newt – you helped us save the house. You’re not a bother at all.”

“Besides – any hotel is at least an hour’s ride from here,” Mikey said. “We don’t have a Portkey or a Floo, and since you haven’t seen much of the area you probably couldn’t apparate there yourself without help.”

The man smiled shyly, and looked down. “Thank you.” He replied quietly, and bashfully looked up at the two of them. “You don’t need to worry about setting up for me, I can just spend the night in my case.” He reassured.

“It’s no trouble at all,” Carlos repeated. “We want to allow you some privacy in our home, after all.” Mikey and Mr Ramon each nodded in agreement.
