“I
lied…. peter doesn’t know the truth either….. he can’t know that
murdering bastard…. and I’ll keep him as far away from him as I can…”

“What murdering bastard?” Carlos asked him. “Do you… are you talking about his father? Yondu, what the hell were you doing? Kids? Banished? Yondu, please – tell me clearly: what happened??”Carlos was very concerned – he had never heard of any of this before. What did Yondu do exactly before they even met??

Sighs. “His fathers name is ego. He’s a celestial very powerful being… ego cane to earth and mated a woman andcpeter was born. He went all over the galaxy mating with all species… and producing children. He… asked me to bring some of his children that were orphans.. mothers having died… he promised a world that I’d have… killed for as a child… so I brought him a dozen or so of his kids….. it wasn’t until right before peter I realized what he was doing….. he was killing them. If the didn’t hold some trait he was looking for or what he’d kill them…… I found peter and I kept him.. to protect him… but my ravager family found out about the others… and banished from the only family I knew…..they never speak….. I killed those kids…. breaking the code… I just… i was stupid to have fallen for his lies….”

Carlos listened carefully, trying not to let his alarm and uneasiness take away from what exactly Yondu was telling him and how it was making him feel. Every word just sounded more and more horrible though, and Carlos wasn’t liking it at all. Yondu was hurting so badly with this… he was carrying a huge burden and he was hiding it from Peter. And maybe Kraglin? (He didn’t know – he got the feeling Kraglin was around before Peter). Tullk probably knew too… and he was still sticking around Yondu, despite everything.

“You… you thought you were giving children the opportunity to grow up with family,” Carlos said softly. “And… and this Ego guy… I don’t think he would have told you what was happening to them, would he?”

He shakes his head. “I just… felt … something wrong… I never saw the kids again… and… it’s like forgot they existed…. I knew he’d killed them.. how or why or….. didn’t matter to me. Only that he did…… I tried to to go to the ravagers… but…. they refused to listen… hear me out…..so… I just… did what I thought was best… raise peter as my own…”

“… so… you essentially kidnapped a child to keep him away from his monster of a father?” Carlos asked. “Why wouldn’t the Ravagers want to support that? I mean, I know the code – some of it at least: you don’t deal in sapient trafficking, with the excepting of bounty hunting.” Carlos thought he was starting to understand somewhat.

Yondu
smiles at that and sits next to him. “Yes and no. The implant gives
signal but the will to make it sing and fly is from our hearts… our
drive…I haven’t gotten it to fly for a while….” whistles the arrow
flashing but doesn’t move and sighs.

Carlos felt his heart clench. “God… how long has this been going on? Have you had the implant checked? Maybe there’s a connection issue to your brain or your nerves or something…”

“It’s none of that it’s fine. Had it checked……. it’s….. it’s because I’m….. sad….. I guess you could say….upset…. depressed…… nothing to do about that but…. let it… run its course I guess..” sighs and flops backwards on the bed looking up at the ceiling.

Carlos looked at Yondu. “And carry a side-arm,” he said dryly. Carlos
sighed deeply. God… he didn’t want this. Carlos lay down next to
Yondu, but propped up on his elbow so he could look down at him. “I’m
sorry… maybe I shouldn’t have let it get this far. I had no idea that
that thing was connected to your emotions.” He sighed. “No wonder you
try to be so callus in front of the rest of the crew.”

Yondu looks at him nodding and sighs. “I’ll tell you something…. notveven my boys know…..not fully. My parents sold me as a baby to the kree slavers to spare them. No clue if they were or not don’t care. I was barley out of the pouch when I was put in chains and collar and branded. I was to be raised as a weapon. A battle slave for protection and most of all entertainment…… I was kept in a small cage when not being used compared to other centaurians I’m stunted if anything in the nexus books are accurate. I was stunted because one… I was a runt and two no proper nutrients……. when I whistled I killed my first master and as punishment they sawed off my fin. Thinking it would keep me from attacking again…… I killed 4 other masters…. teeth.. claws… bludgeon then I whistled again and I killed with a arrow….. it was erratic…. uncontrolled because my fin was gone…. the kree were interested…. I became a project for there scientists…. the cut and drilled into my brain creating a synthetic fin…. the recovery was escrucuating….but it worked…… what they didn’t count on was the dangerous weapon they unleashed with no kill switch. I killed everyone in that base. Every last one of them. And say there until the ravagers came… wanting a fun fight and supplies and all they found was me….”

Carlos just stared wide-eyed at Yondu. “Jesus… I had no idea,” he said softly. Without thinking Carlos curled in and put an arm around Yondu, giving him a side-ways hug as they lay there on the bed. “I’m so sorry, Yondu… that’s terrible…”

Yondu snuggles against him. “That’s how I became who I am. Took months for the ravager to get a real word from me… even though it was a rather vulgar word. I wasn’t punished for it. I was given a family…… I was respected. And I strives to be the best to keep this new family and life….. but I fucked up….. after I became captain….. I… got message of a man… who asked me to get his children from across the galaxy. It paid handsomely and how could I say no. What he was offering these kids was something even I would have loved to have…….. but before I got peter I found out the truth….. and I have a few dozen dead kids blood on my hands…… I kept peter. Kept him as my own to protect from him….. the ravagers…. banished me. I lost my family….”

“Wait, what?” Carlos asked. Some things that Yondu was saying was causing him some alarm. He pulled back to look the Captain in the face. “You told me it was Peter’s mom who asked you to take him in and look after him.”

eats were still dropped down and looks between them all feeling a bit
put on the spot. “I…… I….. Yes…. I…. can..” he glanced at mr.ramon at
times then looked away wishing he wasn’t under the scrutinizing look.

Carlos just frowned at him. “Are… are you saying that just
because you think It’ll make me happy?” he asked softly.

Glances between him and the elder terran. “No. And I hate that sad look on your face… or when your angry at me…… I like it when you smile at me.”

“If… you boys need some time to talk it out, why don’t you
get Carlos’ things up to his room? Mikey and I will start on dinner.” Mr Ramon
smiled at the two of them.

Carlos blinked at his
father. He then turned to look at Yondu to see what he thought about it.

Yondu nods. “Thank you….. I think a good talk is what we need.” Sighs and picks up Carlos’s bag and follows him to his room closing the door behind them as he looks around. “I’m selfish Arnt I…… I should lucky to have had what I did……. it just hurts……here….” puts his hand to his chest over his heart. “We centaurians…whistle with our hearts….. guide our arrows….. but…… I…. I can’t anymore because of the pain…….. gods I wish I looked more human…….”

“I’m kinda glad you don’t – blue’s my favorite color,
remember?” Carlos asked, trying to smile and joke. He then sighed and sat down
on his bed. He looked up at YOndu. “What do you mean you… can’t use your arrow?
I thought it was the implant that allowed it to move.”

“Quick, take my hand, it’s urgent!” (whispers-of-change)

Carlos was taken off-guard, but he merely gave the other a contemplative frown before reaching out to comply. “Uh… alright,” he said.

@whispers-of-change

She smiled back at him and nodded. “Yeah. Yeah, I think you’re right,” she agreed. Wait, had- Had Carlos said the D word? Had she
said the D word? Were they actually discussing the possibility of…
dating? “So- So wait, are- are we actually talking about… the
possibility of, like… starting… something?” she asked, voice nervous.

It was Carlos’ turn to be bashful. He dropped his gaze and
reached up to scratch his cheek. “Well… I’ don’t know,” he said honestly. “I
mean, there certainly is a possibility…
but at this point in time I am unable to calculate exactly the variables
and percentages with which I can articulate our chances. I would require more
time with you… more outings… more, um… more dates.” A thought occurred to him
and he grinned. “I guess you could say… I need more date-a!”

She laughed at his pun, scrunching up her nose. “Oh that was bad,” she grinned. “But… I wouldn’t say no to offering up my time to assist in any further studies you may wish to conduct,” she said with a happy smile. So maybe she hadn’t ruined everything. Maybe things had gone just as they were supposed to. Maybe everything would be okay. “If that’s alright with you.”

Carlos just kept smiling. “Absolutely! If you’re up for it,
then I am!” Things were going so much better now – thank God! And Selina seemed
to be a lot more comfortable now. “I believe we have reached a point where the
two of us can exchange phone numbers… how does that sound to you?”

“Yeah, that sounds great!” she said, enthusiasm exuding from her as she spoke. “I’m… really glad you agreed to meet up with me. I feel like initially I came on really strong, and came across as really weird, so I was… kind of worried I’d scare you off,” she said, pulling her phone out of her pocket. She unlocked it, pulled up the screen to put in a new contact, and slid the phone across the table to Carlos.

Carlos took the phone and started to put in his number. “It’s
okay,” he said. “Like I said, we still have time to get to know each other better
and get past the awkwardness.” He added his name and saved the contact. He
handed the phone back to Selina. “Go ahead and text me so I have your number
too.”
