Carlos smiled a bit awkwardly and shrugged. “Yeah… It’s no
wonder I haven’t even been on a date in such a long time,” he joked. “But yeah,
I do love my work.  It keeps me very
busy, and I don’t mind it.”

“Would ya like to go on a date?” He grinned over at him, even winking for good measure. “I s’pose I can’t really judge, I’m pretty married to my work too. ‘Work’ being runnin’ those two pubs and a couple’a shelters. Nothin’ as impressive as what you do.”

Carlos looked at him, for a second worrying that the other
might be serious. But then he realized that Hancock was just teasing him, and
so he chuckled sheepishly. “Nah, I just… haven’t had time. And I usually don’t
go on dates with people I’ve only met twice before.” Nor did he go on road
trips with those same people, but there they were…

He then smiled at Hancock. “I’m amazed still that you do so
much,” he said. And, presumably, all without a time-turner.”

Carlos’ smile turned sheepish. “Well, I mean… I do see
movies. With my brother. And… I like westerns. But… yeah, my hobbies mostly
surround my work. I have my own workspace at home, so…” He shrugged slightly,
still smiling but not looking at Hancock.

“Hey, it’s alright. Heh, sorry if it sounded like I was judgin’ ya, I didn’t mean to make ya feel awkward or anythin’.” He glanced over, offering an apologetic smile. “I’m just surprised by that, y’know? But if it’s work that makes ya happy, that’s great, I’m happy for ya.”

Carlos smiled a bit awkwardly and shrugged. “Yeah… It’s no
wonder I haven’t even been on a date in such a long time,” he joked. “But yeah,

busy, and I don’t mind it.”

Carlos smiled at him. “Well, I work with technology and
trying to combine them with modern magic. It’s… about all I do, really. I enjoy
it, which… is what I’d always wanted in a career.”

“That’s it? You don’t have any hobbies? Don’t go to the movies or play games or anythin’, just work? I mean, don’t get me wrong, it’s great ya like your work, I’m just curious.”

Carlos’ smile turned sheepish. “Well, I mean… I do see
movies. With my brother. And… I like westerns. But… yeah, my hobbies mostly
surround my work. I have my own workspace at home, so…” He shrugged slightly,
still smiling but not looking at Hancock.

“Oh… um… okay. I guess… some folks are just like that,”
Carlos said a little awkwardly. He didn’t know what to say to that… without
insulting Hancock’s brother, who Carlos of course never met. He also wasn’t sure if ‘sorry’ was appropriate – the guy wasn’t dead, just… apparently an asshole.

“I’m sorry, I uh, I shouldn’t have brought him up, heh. Always get myself all worked up thinkin’ about him.” He glanced over, offering an apologetic little smile. “What uh…. what kinda stuff do ya do for fun back home?”

Carlos smiled at him. “Well, I work with technology and
trying to combine them with modern magic. It’s… about all I do, really. I enjoy
it, which… is what I’d always wanted in a career.”

“Well, I think so,” Carlos said. “But not painfully so.
Ideally you still gotta love each other and be able to be serious and
trustworthy. At least I think so…”

“Well, my brother was and always will be an asshole, probably gets that from my father, but he’s kinda taken it to a fuckin’ extreme, heh. At least it’s not just me he’s an ass too, I guess, just a dick in general.”

“Oh… um… okay. I guess… some folks are just like that,”
Carlos said a little awkwardly. He didn’t know what to say to that… without

“Wow. The most I’ve ever done was given my brother jinxed
pens on occasion. I didn’t want to be too
much of a butt to him, you know?” He offered the other man a slight smile.

“Heh, you were a good brother then. Only way I could ever fight back was with shit from the prank shops, but that ain’t anythin’ compared to the shit he pulled. Guess that’s what you’re supposed to do though, right? Fuck with each other? That’s how television makes it seem, anyway.”

“Well, I think so,” Carlos said. “But not painfully so.

Carlos shrugged again. “Yeah… that’s just how it was though.
I was at least tempted to learn Repairo
wandlessly – it would have made things a little easier.”

“Man, if I’d been in that position, I’d definitely have learned some wandless magic, heh. I wouldn’t have been able to stand it, not doin’ any magic at home. Shit man, even just dealin’ with my brother without magic was awful, guy was an ass when I was a kid and couldn’t throw any spells back at him yet.”

“Wow. The most I’ve ever done was given my brother jinxed
pens on occasion. I didn’t want to be too

Carlos nodded and shrugged slightly. “Yeah… we can’t even
take our wands home during the summer in America. It’s against Ilvermorny
policy.”

“They take ‘em away? Shit man…. America’s strict, huh? We just had to not do shit in front’a muggles. Y’know we don’t need wands to do magic though, right? I mean, I feel like that’d just encourage kids to learn wandless magic early–– or make ya all real rusty by the time ya got back to school at the end of summer.”

Carlos shrugged again. “Yeah… that’s just how it was though.
I was at least tempted to learn Repairo
wandlessly – it would have made things a little easier.”

“It’s fine… it’s for the better, I’ve learned a while ago.”
He smiled sympathetically at Hancock’s story. “I’m sorry that happened. Did you
ever make it up to your friend?”

“Eh, it was fine. I apologized and got him some real expensive gifts to make up for it, he forgave me after that, heh. Those kinda accidents are pretty common with young witches and wizards, y’know? Guess that’s why most of us tend not to hang around muggles, ‘specially when we’re young.”

Carlos nodded and shrugged slightly. “Yeah… we can’t even
take our wands home during the summer in America. It’s against Ilvermorny
policy.”

Carlos was quiet for a moment, debating whether
to go into depth about her. He decided not – they were on a road trip. If it
was going to happen, there was always another time.

“Well… suffice to say, she’s been obliviated
since, and things got better after that,” Carlos told him. “I went to regular
elementary school for a little bit, though my dad told me to be careful with my
powers. Still, I did accidentally enlarge my friend’s rock collection once –
officials fixed it though and I was able to keep my friends.”

“I’m sorry about that, mate.” A frown crossed the redhead’s lips at that, he couldn’t even imagine what growing up like that was like. His own mother, while sometimes distant, was always supportive, at the very least. “I had lots of muggle friends growin’ up too, not ‘cause I was muggle-born or anythin’, my ma just preferred to socialize with everyone, felt like it’d make her kids more well-rounded or something–– not that it worked on my brother. When I first got my magic, I remember accidentally setting my mate’s curtains on fire when I sneezed, heh, put it out quick enough, but his folks were real mad, blamed him for it and I couldn’t exactly tell ‘em the truth.”
