Gellert tapped his chin in thought. “Happy Halloween.” He tossed a new lab coat into the bucket.
“Oh, hey! Um – thanks!” A guy could never have too many labcoats.

Carlos nodded. “Right, of course,” Carlos said. “The last thing you want to hear is a shitty joke.” He grinned and waited to see if this one landed well.
“What did I just say?” The redhead gave him a mock threatening look. “I’ll leave ya right here on the side’a the road if ya keep that up, pal.”
Carlos laughed. Or actually, he cackled. “Sorry, sorry, I won’t do it again! I just had to! I promise, only really good ones from now on!”
“Would you prefer that I scrape even lower into poop jokes?” Carlos teased, but he had a good-natured grin on his face. He understood, of course. He decided that, at least on this trip, he’ll try hard to make the jokes work for Hancock.
“Heh, now that I don’t think I’d be so forgivin’ of.” Hancock snorted, his smile spreading wider. “Too much bathroom humor and I’ll leave ya out here, so be careful’a resortin’ to that too much for a cheap laugh, mate.”
Carlos nodded. “Right, of course,” Carlos said. “The last thing you want to hear is a shitty joke.” He grinned and waited to see if this one landed well.
Carlos chuckled. “Nah, nah, it’s just… I said them so often. I’d be met with a unanimous groaning of ‘Carlos…’ if it was a particularly bad one. My classmates often found them pretty… punishing.”
“Now that was an obvious one.” He gave him a pointed look, though the smile remained on his face. “I’ll laugh at your jokes, but not the easy ones, that’s low-hanging fruit right there and I know you can do better, mate.”

Carlos grinned at him. “Yeah? Well give it a while… I’m sure that soon you’re going to be groaning at my work. It’s okay – I”m used to it. Puns are just some of my favorites.”
“We’ll see, I s’pose. Puns ain’t exactly my favorite form of humor, but that’s alright, I like ya well enough to overlook that.” He winked. “You get a lotta groans from folks for jokin’ around? Why is that? People in the states don’t like to laugh or something?”
Carlos chuckled. “Nah, nah, it’s just… I said them so often. I’d be met with a unanimous groaning of ‘Carlos…’ if it was a particularly bad one. My classmates often found them pretty… punishing.”
Carlos just laughed. This was the most fun he’d ever had with a near-stranger already, and their trip was just starting.
“You know, not everyone I meet is as god a sport as you with jokes.”
“I just prefer to go with the flow, I guess.” Hancock shrugged, his smile widening at Carlos’ laughter, he really was cute. “I like keepin’ things light and fun, y’know? Ain’t gonna get mad at a little pokin’ fun when I know you’re not bein’ serious. Besides, you’re a pretty funny guy, why would I wanna squash that spirit?”
Carlos grinned at him. “Yeah? Well give it a while… I’m sure that soon you’re going to be groaning at my work. It’s okay – I”m used to it. Puns are just some of my favorites.”
“Irish charm?” Carlos asked with a smile. “Or maybe another sort of charm? How’s your wand-work with illegal spells? I’m kidding, I’m kidding. Heh.”
“Heh, I’m not so big on usin’ those kinds’a charms on folks, but who knows? Maybe I added a little somethin’ to that potion I have ya.” He joked, shooting a wink at Carlos so he’d know he was joking.

“You know, not everyone I meet is as god a sport as you with jokes.”
“Yeah?” Carlos asked. “Yeah, uh… this, what we’re doing, is really out of the norm for me.” He chuckled again. “I… I”m not sure how you convinced me to do this with you. Usually, my work is ‘fun’ enough for me.”
“Just that Irish charm, I s’pose.” He snorted, giving Carlos a wink and a grin. “I got a way of gettin’ people to go outta their comfort zone a little to experience more’a life.”
“Irish charm?” Carlos asked with a smile. “Or maybe another sort of charm? How’s your wand-work with illegal spells? I’m kidding, I’m kidding. Heh.”
Carlos laughed. “Well, I’ll be honest, seeing him date would probably
be too weird for me. He’s been single for such a long time.”And they were right back to talking (flirting?) about Carlos, huh?
“And
well, you know, there’s a reason I’ve been single for a while too,” he
went on. “Intelligence might be attractive, yeah… until the workaholic
inventor misses too many dates. You know, like Robin Williams in Flubber. Though I haven’t missed my own wedding, thank God.”“Heh, I s’pose I can see how that’d be an issue for some folks. You keep yourself pretty busy all the time then, huh? Never get out for a little fun? Or is it that ya just don’t have the right folks around you to drag ya away from your work for a little while? Either way, I can relate–– well, not with the inventor part, but bein’ a bit of a workaholic.”
“Yeah?” Carlos asked. “Yeah, uh… this, what we’re doing, is really out of the norm for me.” He chuckled again. “I… I”m not sure how you convinced me to do this with you. Usually, my work is ‘fun’ enough for me.”
Carlos nodded to Hancock, smiling. “Oh yeah – he’s absolutely great at cooking,” he told Hancock. “He worked as a chef in his day. But he’s also a dad, so beware of Dad Jokes. Heheh!”
“I can’t help but feel like you’re tryin’ to set me up with your da, tellin’ me about all his best attributes. I do have a thing for older men.” He joked, shooting a wink over at the other man. “Y’know, you seem to be quite the catch yourself, handsome, a lot of people find intelligence extremely attractive, myself included.”
Carlos laughed. “Well, I’ll be honest, seeing him date would probably
be too weird for me. He’s been single for such a long time.”
